It can’t be him. I thought he’d never be at a place like this.
“Eh? What’s your problem, loser,” Jeno retorted, taking a few steps closer to the boy.
They exchanged a few more words. I couldn’t hear properly since my ear was still ringing from the impact.
The boy suddenly grabbed Jeno by the collar and pushed him to the wall harshly. Students that were once crowded around us fled.
I was unsure if this aura was the same as the boy I knew in my past. All I could do was continue to witness what was about to unfold.
“I’m perfectly fine, sweetheart,” the boy teased and smacked the side of Jeno’s head.
His last words for Jeno was what triggered all my memories of pain and misery to come back. I was unprepared for what I was about to hear.
“Na Jaemin...Remember this name,” he said flatly before he parted ways, leaving Jeno sitting against the wall.
I crawled away to the girl’s bathroom. Eyes stared in my direction as I was trying to muster the energy to pick myself up. A pair of arms suddenly wrapped around my waist, lifting me. I lightly touched the arms around me.
“Don’t worry, Yoona. I’ll take care of you,” Renjun muttered in my ear.
My eyes widened and I pushed him away, causing me to fall back down to the floor. Heat rose from my cheeks. I was trying my best not to look flustered.
“Yah, don’t be like that. I’m not a pervert,” he picks me up again and puts me into bridal style.
I wrapped my arms around his neck, looking away.
Renjun was a fellow classmate of mine. Unfortunately, he was in all my classes, so I was forced to befriend him. He was obnoxious sometimes, but overall a good friend. Outside of class, he hung out with Mark, Donghyuck, Chenle, and Jisung. I bet him twenty dollars that they were all gay, but he refused to make that sort of bet with me.
He carried me to the nurse’s office, setting me down on a cot. The lunch bell rang and I told him that he could leave, but he insisted on staying.
“Renjun, you don’t need to stay. I’ll punch you if you don’t leave in the next 2 seconds,” I lifted my fist up.
“Okay, okay, I’m leaving. Make sure you rest well and take care of yourself,” he put his hands up in defense and left.
I closed my eyes and drifted off to sleep, dreaming about the boy who left me.
“Nana, you don’t need to hide from me,” I tugged on his black hoodie.
He turned around and glared at me with dark eyes, “YOU SAID YOU LOVED ME. LEAVE ME THE FUCK ALONE YOU LIAR.”
I was terrified at this point, but I kept calm, breathing slowly.
“Nana...Find yourself through your alter egos. You can’t lose yourself. I can’t lose you,” I cupped his face.
Jaemin was struggling to escape my strong grip.
“Let go of me, sweetheart. I’ll make you pay for this,” he started laughing psychotically.
I pulled his face closer to mine and closed my eyes. He was still making threats. With each word was a drop of poison, entering me. I planted a kiss on his forehead.
It felt like his body shut down. He fell to his knees and I fell down alongside him.
Tears streamed down his cheeks as he hugged me.
“You need to stay away from me, Yoona. I’ll hurt you if you stay,” he was breathing quickly, nearly choking on his tears.
“I-I can’t just leave you to go through this alone,” Jaemin shook his head and held my hand.
“Yoona, I need to leave this place. You’re my best friend and I need to keep you safe. Because I love you, I need to leave you,” I started to cry.
My heart ached with every word he said. He was the first person to see all sides of me. If he leaves me, I won’t have anyone.
I took a deep breath and made my decision. It would cause me extreme amounts of pain, but I had to do it for us.
“Jaemin, if you leave, promise me this,” he looked up at me, meeting my eyes.
“Anything, Yoona. Anything to save us,” he smiled.
The last genuine smile I’ll witness.
“A way to control your emotions is to not show them at all. I don’t care how much you need to cry or laugh or love. Keep a blank slate at all times. Don’t get close to anyone. Their feelings will only break the Jaemin I know. You’ll save others from you. One day when you’re good enough, your alter egos will go away. Do you think you can do that for me?” he looked hesitant.
“Please, Nana. It might be the only way. You’ll live a lonely life, but at least nothing bad could happen to you or anyone else,” Jaemin nodded instantly.
We both got up and said our goodbyes. I sealed our friendship with one last hug and we parted ways. Both of us were trying not to cry, knowing we’ll never see each other again. My heart was already aching. I didn’t look back once we parted ways, but that was for the best.
Na Jaemin won’t break.
Have a nice day~ ❤
