She rushed down the stairs leaving her fiancé behind. She got to the bottom and enveloped me into a hug. I let go of Shawns hand and hugged my sister back. I knew I had Shawn here for comfort and support but having my sister in my arms was really what I needed. Someone in my family welcoming me just gave me that reassurance of being okay. That this would be okay.
We pulled apart and she went to hug Shawn. Her fiancé made it down the stairs and walked over. He was very handsome, tall, sandy blonde curls, and green eyes. It wasn't surprising she ended up with someone like him, they both looked like they belonged together.
"Peyton, Shawn this is my soon to be husband Sam. Sam this is my baby sister and her fiancé." She introduced us.
"It's nice to finally meet the man who my sister can't stop talking about." I tell him as we hugged.
"Glad to finally have met all her family." He days with a chuckle.
"Well not all of them just yet," Serenity said with a smile, "Okay lemme see that new bump."
I was about to lift up my hoodie but I heard her voice. I suddenly felt my heart racing really fast and my body went stiff.
"Well isn't it my dearest daughter, Peyton. Glad to see you decided to show up." My mother said as she walked over towards the group of us.
I put on a fake smile, "Glad to see you still look the same as well mother."
"It has only been five months." She said back.
Her eyes glanced from me to Shawn. She then put on her fake welcoming smile before walking towards us.
"Now my daughter did not tell me she was bringing a handsome friend as her plus one." My mother told him as she held out her hand.
Shawn took her hand in his and shook it, "Cause you make it so easy to tell you things." I muttered.
"Peyton if you're going to speak, speak clearly no one understands you when you mumble." She told me strictly as she let go of Shawns hand.
"Shawn isn't my friend, he's my fiancé," I told her with a fake smile before holding up my left hand showing her the ring, "Was that clear enough for you mother?" I asked.
She looked at the ring and then at me and Shawn, "Engaged? You've been gone for five months. Last I knew you weren't dating anyone when you left." She said with a laugh, obviously not buying it.
"And?" I asked clearly annoyed.
"And there's no way you could've possibly found someone. Unless you told him your last name, which last I checked it was the reason why you left." She tried to say as if there was no other reason why someone could love me.
Like there would be no other interest of a guy to wanna marry me. It hurt, anything that came from my mother hurt. I didn't show it to her because I taught myself at a young age not to. It made me look weak next to her. But it hurt coming from her because she was still my mom.
"Actually, he didn't even know who I was. See mom, guess names aren't everything as you thought." I said, standing my ground.
She shook her head, "Peyton, you really expect me to believe that?"
I shook my head, "I don't expect you to believe anything. Believe what you want mother, you always have and always will. I just came to celebrate my sisters big week, then I'll be back to San Francisco."
"Still believe that's the life for you?" She asked with a disapproving tone.
I nodded and smiled, "Yeah I do. I met the man who loves me for me and not my name. And it's the place where I will be having your grandchild. By the way congratulations, you're going to be a grandmother."
When I said those words, all the color drained from my mothers face. I was scared of this moment, but I never knew how much relief it brought me. It was finally said.
•••
And this was just the beginning of what was supposed to be a good week. But really anywhere my mom was, nothing was ever good. I thought I had already knew that. But even she still surprises me.
