~1979~
"I don't know Diana!" I said exasperated as I collapsed onto my hotel bed. I sighed into the pillow and rolled over.
"C'mon Y/N, it's your first invitation to a release party," Diana spoke cooly. I groaned.
"Not my invitation, yours," I spoke sadly.
You see, I was in the music business. As a up and coming singer. Very slowly up and coming.
I met Diana back in the 1960s when I was a child. My father worked at Motown as a soundboard technician, helping some of the greats, including Diana. They became friends and she got close with my family. I used to call her Auntie Diana but she told me when I got older to stop because it 'made her feel old.'
But have you seen her body! My girl's rockin'!
I sung a bit but I never showed anyone until Diana convinced me to sing one of her songs in front of her. My little 13 year old self belted out 'Love Is Here To Stay' from her, at the time, newly released album 'Lady Sings the Blues.'
She saw potential in me and took me under her wing. And so now I'm writing an album that soon to be released, hopefully, in the upcoming year.
"Girl, doesn't matter," She chastised. "Now get your big ol' butt up and pick a dress!" She spoke, patting my stomach.
I sat up with a tired struggle and Diana laughed.
"You're 19, stop acting like you're as old as me," She sarcastically spoke and I laughed.
She began pulling different dresses out of my suitcase. She lifted two dresses, a white gown and a green off the shoulder dress. I scrunched my nose and shook my head. She sighed and threw them to the side in a pile. This same pattern went on for about 20 minutes until she finally turned around with her hands on her hips and looked at me with furrowed eyebrows.
"Who you trying to impress child?" She spoke but as soon as she said it her eyes widened. A smirk came onto her face and she tsked. My face flushed in embarrassment and I looked down and twiddled my fingers.
"What?" I spoke pretending to be unaware. I felt her sit next to me on the bed. I looked up to her and gave a nervous and confused smile.
"You have the hots for Michael!" She cheerfully spoke as she wrapped her arms around me.
Unsurprisingly, Diana thought of Michael. Tonight was Michael's album release party for his album 'Off The Wall' at Studio 54 in New York. Diana invited me as her plus one so she could introduce me to some producers who would be at the party. I nervously accepted because in reality I truly did have a crush on Michael. I only had a few interactions with him when he lived with Diana for a little while in the early 70s. We connected on our shared love for climbing trees and I fell head over heels for him very quickly.
"Diana...," I started and tried to pull away from her but she only held on tighter.
"Ooh my two babies together...," Diana rambled happily as she continued to hold me. I uncomfortably tried to get out of her arms but she held me in a vice grip.
"Diana..." I drawled out, trying to gain her attention but she was in a little day dream.
"You two going to award shows together, OOH, and..." She continued but I cut her off.
"DIANA!" I called out and she finally snapped out her daze and pulled back. She smiled widely. I sighed and rubbed my forehead.
"I don't like Michael," I spoke seriously. She looked at me and cocked her head. I thought she understood, but then she burst out in laughter.
