Glenn cleared his throat. "Wayne," he said in a tone that would sound harsh if it was anyone other than Glenn. "Can you have those data to me by the end of the day?"
Wayne's attention went to Glenn as he nodded. "I can have it to you by fourth period. This is easy for me."
Glenn nodded as he kept watching Jenny. "Great. Thanks."
Wayne nodded before he turned back to face Jenny. Jenny's eyes darted between Wayne and Glenn, not knowing what to do or what to say. She never even thought to consider that Glenn might be here with someone else.
Before Wayne could ask her a question or break the silence, Glenn said, "Wayne, if that's all, would you please excuse us. I have something important to discuss with Jenny."
"Really? What?" Wayne's brows hooded together with suspicion, his eyes darting between Glenn and Jenny as if they were masterminding a plan.
"It's a private matter," Glenn said, his eyes hardening at Wayne. "So if you would..."
After a couple of seconds of hesitation, Wayne nodded before he collected his stuff.
"So it's true then," he managed to mutter out before he walked out of the room.
To make matters more awkward, he said it loud enough that the words almost hung stagnant in the air. Both Glenn and Jenny knew what Wayne had meant by those words.
It was about the rumor that was circulating school about the nature of their relationship and also the reason why Jenny was so early to school for.
Jenny bit her lower lip as she tried to come up with what to say. The words she had been preparing on her way there had seemingly just disappeared after she saw Wayne there.
She looked at Glenn and almost sighed in relief when it was obvious that he was struggling over what to say.
After a good number of minutes of silence had passed, Glenn cleared his throat. "So about dinner tonight..."
Jenny smiled in relief that he brought it up. "About that. I came to talk to you about that."
He smiled almost on relief. "Great. I wanted to ask is your family into spicy or neutral?"
"What?" Jenny asked, confused by the question.
"How much spicy can you handle?" He smiled again as if he was excited. "From 1-5, how spicy can your family take?"
Without truly understanding what was happening, she replied, "3 I guess."
"Okay great," Glenn said before he grabbed his notebook and started scribbling on it. "That means I don't have to add that much chili's into it."
"Why?"
"Oh, I was going to make my grandmother's chili tonight and bring it. It's the best in the world and I wanted your family to taste it."
Jenny's heart dropped instantly because she realized that unlike her and her aversion to the dinner later on, Glenn had been looking forward to it.
Only then did Glenn sense how reserved Jenny was being. "Why? Is the dinner not happening?"
Without thinking it through, Jenny smiled as widely as she could at that moment. "No, it is. It's happening."
Glenn smiled again. "Great then. It's at seven right?"
Jenny nodded.
After a couple more minutes of them sorting through the details, Jenny left the council room feeling more annoyed with herself than she did before she entered the room.
