Tom Doesn't Like The Fourth Wall

Start from the beginning

"Ow!" He rubbed at his shoulder. "Why'd you do that?"

So you'd know I wasn't bluffing.

"Yeah, okay. But couldn't you have just made me snap my fingers or something less painful?"

I said I'd hurt you if I had to.

"You're no fair." Tom stood up and started pacing around the room. He was thinking about the hero, a- "Adam."

Pardon?

"His name isn't 'hero'. His name is Adam."

Fine.

He was thinking about Adam. About what he was doing, if he drank tea of coffee this morning, or if he had neither because he's perfect.

"He's not perfect. There are some things I can't stand about him."

Really? Name one thing you don't like about him.

"Well, I- uh, don't like how he... or that he.."

Forget it. You think he's perfect.

"No, I don't. He talks to much! There's one thing I don't like about him."

Yeah, but you think it's cute that his thoughts race too fast for his speech to keep up. Trust me, I know everything about you. You think the her- Adam. You think Adam is perfect.

"You don't know everything about me."

Yes, I do.

"What's my lucky number?' Tom looked towards the ceiling and pointed a finger up at it as if  I was up there.

37 and a half.

"What's my least favorite book?"

To Kill A Mockingbird.

"How many sit-ups did I do last week at the gym?"

43.

"Why did I break up with my first girlfriend?"

You realized you were gay.

"What animal am I terrified of the most and why?"

Bunnies. Because you're weirded out by how their teeth never stop growing.

"It's freaky. How do you know all this?"

I'm the narrator. I have to know everything about you. If I didn't, I couldn't tell the story right.

"I guess. Do you know what I'm thinking?"

Yeah, I can read your mind if I need to.

"If you need to?"

Yeah. Like, I'm not reading your mind right now, but if I need to know what you were thinking for the benefit of the story, I can tap into your thoughts.

"Is it hard to do?"

About as hard as curling your hand into a fist.

"That easy?"

Yep.

"What am I thinking about right now?" A moment goes by where I try to figure out what Tom is thinking about.

About how much you don't like bunnies. You should go to therapy for that, Tom.

"Their teeth are just so weird. Why don't they stop growing?"

I'm not a biologist, Tom. I don't know.

"Do you know how the story ends?"

Excuse me?
