Petra shook her head and tried to focus back at the task at hand. It's been about 35 minutes and she was starting to feel the burn in her legs.
She could hear her heart beat like like drums while her lungs ached as they craved for oxygen.
Petra slowed down to a walk and began taking heavy breaths of air. She leaned down, placing her hands on her knees for support.
Despite the obvious exhaustion, Petra was proud of herself. Back then, just jogging for 15 minutes and she already felt like dying.
Though the expedition in Rose Lake did somewhat help her with her stamina with the long distance walking, Petra knew it wasn't going to be enough for the upcoming expedition.
(Y/N)'s advice had helped; to regularly jog a few times a week. Petra has been following her advice for a few months now, and the result certainly didn't betray her hard work.
Petra straightened her back after regaining control of her breath. There wasn't any coffee shops nearby, but there was small cafe, and Petra settled with that.
The bell rang as she opened the door and stepped inside. Tugging her cap, Petra headed over to the counter to make her order. "Hi, can I get some coffee?"
The woman behind the counter smiled and nodded. "Sure. What would you like?"
"A vanilla latte please." Petra's eyes wandered over to the pastries the cafe had offered, and she was immediately tempted.
'A little bit of sweets before 2 months of torture is okay... right?' Petra thought, her mouth slightly watering.
"And I'll also have a slice of blueberry pie," she quickly added.
The lady gave Petra a smile after she finished ordering. Petra gave the money and grabbed the exchange given back to her. "Alright. Have a seat and we'll have your order served in no time."
Petra mumbled a 'thank you' and sat down at one of the tables by the window. She took out her phone and checked her social media as she waited for her breakfast.
The door of the cafe rang, signaling that there was a customer coming in. Petra heard it, but paid no attention to it since it was none of her business. She showed no interest even when the new customer chose to sit at the table behind her.
A waited stopped by at her table a few minutes later and placed down her drink and mouth-watering pie. After muttering a thank you, the strawberry-blonde wasted no time in digging in her meal.
Petra sipped on her warm coffee, savoring its delightful taste. She gulped down the last piece of her pie, licking her lips in satisfaction afterwards.
Though Petra had tried her best not to eavesdrop on the hushed conversation between the people sitting behind her, it was starting to get harder since their voices' tone rising.
All of sudden, the voices she heard began to sound far too familiar. Petra turned off her phone, and placed it facing forward on her table. She adjusted the angle, with the hopes of getting the person's face through the reflection.
Petra's eyes widened as the reflection cleared, and she quickly placed her phone down and tugged her cap lower, hoping they don't recognize her.
Petra closed her eyes, and focused her hearing on the loud muttering from behind her. Though it took quite a while, she was finally able to make out what they're saying.
"-at made you think it was a good idea to do this to (Y/N)?" Petra held her gasp of shock as she heard her friend's name. This voice was no doubt Levi's voice. She would recognize it anywhere.
"I already told you, midget. Stop making me repeat things damnit." A gruff voice replied. Petra was certain it belonged to Kenny.
Petra fumbled with her phone, quickly opening it and hitting 'record'. This was far from her moral laws, but (Y/N) must hear this.
"Well I'm not doing it anymore." Levi spat, his voice slightly raising.
Kenny groaned, and Petra could imagine him rubbing his temples. "Here we go again... Listen you shitstack. We've been over this before. You're doing this for her own good. You care about that girl, don't you?"
"Yes, I do. I care about her," Levi growled.
Kenny sighed. "Then there you go. Now--"
Levi cut Kenny off, "I care about her so much, that it pains for me to see her so hurt because of what I've done."
At this point, Kenny was starting to lose his cool. "If you don't stay away from her, then it will get to her!"
"If I stay away from her," Levi retaliated immediately, "then it will get me."
"No it wouldn't. I trained you to have a strong mind. It won't get you unless you let it, or it finds out that you have a weak spot."
The sound of a chair creaking made Petra assume Levi had sunken back into his seat. Kenny continued, "That girl is your weak spot. Lose control of your emotions, and you'll be as good as dead."
Levi didn't reply.
"I'm telling you to do this because I'm only trying to look out for you, understand that."
A moment of silence passed by, and Levi finally spoke again. "Even after you stayed away from her, it still got to you didn't it? So in the end, you still lose. You gave up the woman you loved, and it still managed to get a grasp on you."
"Oy," Kenny growled deeply.
"So what you did all those years ago, was in vain. You suffered for nothing, and I'm not going to repeat what you've done."
This time, Kenny remained silent. "I'm not going to avoid her anymore Kenny. I will not lose the one person I love. I'm not going to become a hopeless bastard like you."
"You do realize what you've done can't be fixed instantly, right? She probably hates your guts right now. Sure, I might've kissed another woman, but at least I didn't cut all contacts with her, let alone block her number."
Petra heard the sound of cups clinking, before Levi hissing out, "I bet that woman wished you had cut all contacts with her."
"Actually, no she didn't ya little dwarf. Even after she married, I was still her good friend. That's something you'll probably never get back."
"Don't be so sure of yourself old man."
"Tch. Oy, you!"
Petra flinched, hearing the voice aimed towards her. Levi seemed confused. "You who?"
"That girl right there. She's been eavesdropping the entire thing, haven't ya kid?"
Petra squeaked, quickly hitting the stop button on her phone.
She could feel Levi's gaze boring into her back. His voice was sharp and hinted with anger. "What? Who are you?"
Petra turned around slowly, her hazel eyes meeting familiar steel-blue ones.
"You..." Levi murmured out, his voice rumbling deeply.
Petra lost it.
She bolted out of her chair and raced to the door, frantically opening it and sprinting away in the direction of the school.
'(Y/N) has to hear all this!'
Levi watched her run from the window, not making an attempt to chase her down.
"Aren't you gonna go after her?" Kenny asked lazily, drinking his barely-warm cup of sugarless, black coffee.
Levi crossed his arms. "Why should I? (Y/N) will know sooner or later. And I trust Petra won't tell this to anyone but her."
Kenny took a big gulp of his coffee, before grunting out, "What will you do Levi, if she doesn't forgive you, even after you kneel down and beg endlessly for her forgiveness, huh?"
Levi had his back facing Kenny as he stood deathly still. After a minute of silence passed, the raven turned around and walked past Kenny.
"At least I know that I tried."
