'Helplessly praying, the light isn't fadin'

Start from the beginning

'Have you got your phone, we will split up.' She nods, halfway down the path to the road, as Joe and Alfie follow. Zoe tells them she will wait here, as the boys come running down, having heard the raised voices. Zoe tries to get out of Isabelle what happened, unsure of what caused this situation.

'Is she going to be okay auntie Zoe?' Noah asks, as he goes in for a hug. 'Where has she gone?'

'We don't know, and of course she will.' She lies.

Before long, Alfie, Joe and a frantic Dianne are searching the streets, no one saw where she ran off too, it's not like she knows the area that well, none of them having any clue where she would run off too.

After half an hour, they still haven't had any luck, Joe wondering when it is appropriate to call the police. It's mid-afternoon, and it's getting cold. He bumps into Dianne, who is almost in tears. 'Any luck?' He shakes his head, grabbing her. 'Why has she done this?'

'I don't know Di.' He's at a loss for words, he doesn't know where the little girl has gone. About an hour and a half later, Alfie finds a little figure sitting on a bench. He slowly approaches it, wondering if it is the little girl. The closer he gets, the more certain he is about the child. Before long he's sitting next to her, she's just sitting there, swinging her legs.

'Amelia?' She looks up, frightened. He watches as she recognises him, standing up and about to back away. 'Stay here.' She looks between the bench and her uncle.

'Am I in trouble?' Her voice barely audible, as he shakes his head.

'No, you aren't darling, but everyone is worried.' She shrugs, looking away. 'Do you want to talk about it?' She lets out a sigh. 'We can sit here, but I need to phone mum and dad to let them know.' He notices she's shivering, it's too be expected, she's been out for god knows how long. He takes off his jacket and placing it on her. It swamps her, but she pulls it around, watching as Alfie dials the number. 'Hey Di.' He speaks into the phone. 'I've found her.' The small child can hear her mum speak. 'Will you speak to mummy?' She shakes her head. 'Sorry Di, she won't speak but she is here. I can send a picture. There is a silence, as he runs his hand through his hair. 'Okay, you phone Joe. I will come back in a bit, with her.'

She stares at him, before turning around and looking out onto the sea. 'Do you want to explain it, because everyone is so worried.' She shrugs, tucking her arms around her small waist.

'That's it.' She looks up into his eyes, hers threatening to spill the tears. 'Everyone is so worried, I can't be me.' He pulls her in close, 'I just can't stand the looks uncle Alfie.'

'The looks?'

'Everyone looks at me like I am about to crack, constantly watching me. I can't do things I want because mum says it's too dangerous. I want my life back, I want to be Amelia Sugg again.'

'They only do it because they love you.' She shrugs, clearly not interested in what her parents have to say.

'But I can't do it.' Alfie feels a vibration in his pocket, rejecting the call. This conversation seems more important. She looks back up to him, watching him reject the call. 'No one understands.'

'No, but you can help us try.'

'No one listens to what I have to say, what is the point.'

'I'm listening now.' He looks down at his niece, seeing how much she has grown up in the last year, she's changed since the fit, and no one has noticed. She's grown up, but something about of her personality has changed. He can't put his finger on it though.

'No one listens to me, I am the one having the fits. I am the one who has to take those disgusting yellow tablets. I know mummy and daddy are worried, but I am the one who has to live with it, and they just make it worse.'

'They-'

'I know what you are going to say uncle Alfie.' She cuts him off. 'I know mum and dad are worried about me, and I know I should be lucky. I just can't.' He notices how the breeze is making her freeze, even with the coat. He looks at his phone, it's gone five.

'How about we go home?' She looks sceptical, 'We'll go and get fish and chips for everyone and then go back.'

'Am I going to be in trouble?'

'No darling. No, you aren't.'

All three of the adults are waiting by the window, the child clocks this and looks back at Alfie, he can see the mix of panic and frustration written on her face. It occurs to him that this is what she means, the looks. The feeling of constantly being watched, waiting for something to happen. He just nods his head, unlocking the door.

'Are you okay?' Dianne runs in, grabbing the child. Joe notices the look on his daughter's face. 'Don't.' She kisses the forehead of her daughter. 'Ever.' Kiss. 'Do.' Kiss. 'That.' Kiss. 'Again.' Kiss. She shakes her head, wrapping her arms around her mum, as she feels a stray tear fall onto her, looking and seeing her mum in tears.

'It's okay mum.' She comforts. 'I am sorry.'

'I brought fish and chips.' Alfie tells everyone. 'Let's eat them, and then we can have a proper sit down with Amelia.' They nod, as the other kids run in. Isabelle runs in, hugging her within an inch of her life. For the first time in a while, Amelia smiles at her parents, relieved to get everything off her chest.
