Chapter XIV - The Road to Tash is Paved with Good Intentions

Start from the beginning

She opens her eyes as the final drops fall. She looks up and must have seen my face filled with utter astonishment because she laughed slightly, spinning the top onto her bottle.

I clear my throat, regaining my focus as I stood up. I offer her a hand up, "Ready?"

"I guess," She replies, taking my hand.

It had been about an hour since we snuck away from camp. Though I never actually imagined Ashton agreeing to this trip, especially since she might not like the outcome. However, I fully believe Ashton's pure boredom convinced her to come. In the time she has been here I'm fairly sure she has only spoken to Aslan and I. I figured time away from camp might be beneficial for the both of us since I haven't gotten much time away from war plans lately. Walking through the words itself was nice to clear the mind.

"That's it, Cupcake." Ashton stops, "I'm not taking another step until you tell me where we are going."

"Fine, give me your blades first." I declare.

She gives me a look, practically asking if I was stupid just for asking. Trust was not something that was easily given by the blonde girl

Drop my shoulders, tired of her constant stubbornness, "Just do it."

She gives me a glare, unstrapping her belt with long sword and thigh holster holding a medium blade then throwing them down on the ground next to her.

Before she can act as if that was all, I cut in, "The ankle dagger too."

She groans, reaching for the final blade, waving it in the air before throwing it into a nearby tree perfectly without even trying.

"If this is an ambush you do know I can just kill you with my hands right?" She points out and I don't doubt her in that matter.

"It's not an ambush." I assure her, looking over the scene, "Try having a little faith in me."

"No offense, but did we walk an hour into the woods for a river?" Ashton asks, seeming tired. "Yes, it's absolutely stunning but there's a river five minutes from camp."

I shake my head, "If we were five minutes from camp you could just run back when I tell you why we are here."

"Enlighten me. Why exactly are we here, Cupcake?" She follows up.

"I'm going to teach you how to swim," I state proudly.

"Nope." She states plainly, turning on her heel, heading back to her things, "Time to go."

I lightly grab her arm, pulling her back, "Come on. You need to learn. It's an important life skill."

"I have many skills. I don't need to be surrounded by something that can kill me for no reason." She fights.

"You never can predict when you'll need to swim, so the simplest solution is just to learn now." I persuade.

"In my seventeen years of life, I have only needed to swim once. And look," She said with motioning to herself, "I'm still living."

"Yeah, you literally died the first time," I prove. She goes to find another stubborn comment but I stop her, "Can you please just try?"

Ashton gives me a dirty look before starting to unlace her shoes. I take this as her silent agreement and smile as I begin to pull my boots off, taking off my belt with my sword and canteen connected to it as well. I discard my vest and shirt jumping off a rock into the river. I take a moment to appreciate the coolness of the water, floating lightly looking at the surrounding forest. My eyes land upon Ashton, who was about a meter away from the water just looking at it flow by.
