He practiced jumping a few times, more a skip really, and did tricks as she allowed him to work out his energy. The energy all children his age had but he rarely got the chance to really and truly work out. It is why he never got annoyed or frustrated not being able to catch them.

Suddenly a shadow he was almost able to touch with his chubby fingers took a sharp turn. He tried to turn after it and started to go down. He hadn't even hit the ground before she was before him, grabbing him up before he could hit the floor fully. He could have really gotten hurt if his torso or little arms had hit the hard stone, or even his head.

He had escaped with only a scrapped knee. To an adult they'd grit their teeth, let out a breath and stand up feeling fine. But Kohmus was a toddler, not an adult.

The little boy whimpered shaking a bit, the pain originating from his knee, the shock of a fall, and the worry clear in his mama's dark eyes all swirled with each other making the pain and fear stronger. He fought not to let the tears fall, as strong little boys didn't cry and he was strong, and he managed it but barely.

However she wasn't fighting her own tears and that made him feel even worse. He made her cry. He made mama cry. As his little mind searched through the panic to find a way to make it better but she was already standing. "I'm sorry...I'm...I should go, I need to go." She was walking away before he realized.

He had made her cry so now she was leaving him. Getting up, his new fear and adrenaline pushing the pain away he ran after her, despite having worked off plenty of energy he was able to reach her before she disappeared. He didn't know how he would make it better but for his childish mind he did all he could think.

"Please don't go! Don't leave!" He begged holding her a bit tighter as if he could keep her with him. He was terrified that she now hated him, would never come back and he'd lose who he viewed as a parent just as much as his mother, father, or the nursery maids. "I'm sorry I made you cry mama," he whispered out a few tears of his own slipping from his own eyes. He quickly wiped them against her skirt at the back of her knees she didn't move further away though he knew despite all his efforts she could get away from him.

She turned around and looked down at him and Kohmus looked up worried this would be the last time he saw his mama. However he relaxed as she reached up and picked him up, allowing him to easily slot against her lap and he nuzzled into her holding her close.

"Don't cry Kohmus. Please, I won't leave." She promised and that was enough to calm Kohmus down. "Just please, please don't cry. I'll stay as long as you need me to." That calmed Kohmus more then anything and what she said next had him relaxing and resting his head on her shoulder. "As long as you want, I'll be right here." She whispered as she wiped his tears he hadn't really realized that he had shed but at the moment he didn't care.

_ _ _

Kohmus was confused, worried, his head was messed up. She was invading his thoughts. That kind performer who had come from Sami where her family were blacksmiths. She had become a performer having shown a talent for dancing from the time she was young, she had wanted to dedicate her life to being a priestess to the god Khonshu which was the god she always felt close to. Like how he felt close to Nephthys it was instinctive. However her dancing had been seen and decided by the high priestess that the gods didn't wish for her to be a priestess, her duty was to dance for the people. To share the gifts they had given her to the people of the kingdom.

She was so much more then that. She loved all colors, wishing she could reach out and grab the colors from the world, having caught glimpses of paintings from the Greeks, Persians and Romans and though she could never do it she longed for it.

She was stubborn, he could always see that little glare she would give when someone went against her though she knew she could do nothing about it. It gave him a spark of protectiveness, wanting to make sure the one who made her hands twitch wanting to become a fist knew to never do whatever they had done to her ever again.

He knew she wouldn't be one to use their budding friendship to her advantage. He had been walking by and overheard her speaking to a guard. She had outright refused to speak of him. It is true that sometimes the Pharaoh talks to me, but it has nothing to do with me outside of it.

She could have demanded that the guard do as she wished, having wanted him to let her pass and really she had every right to enter the room where she and the other entertainers were housed. But she was different then those he was lucky enough to call friend.

His heart pounded when he was around her, randomly he found himself thinking of her for no reason. Whenever he saw her his amber and black eyes were drawn to her, everything seemed to remind him of her, and all he wanted to do was make her smile because when she was happy he was happy.

He was in deep trouble.

It had been his dear friend Djefatsen who he had married only for political reasons. Her own lover and now it seemed he had one. She had told him that he was, he was shocked never having loved anyone like that but it had felt instantly so right.

He needed advice having no idea how to proceed in this. He could ask his advisers, his friends, even Djefatsen seeing as she was the one who saw his feelings when he was still blind to them. But no, there was only one he could think to ask.

It wasn't until three days later he was able to speak to her though, Nephthys as he wished to. He had seen her the day of but had been too shy to say anything. She could probably tell, as she had watched him grow up and had been his parent just as much as the ones who were responsible for his birth.

"Something is on your mind." The goddess cut to the chase after he failed to continue.

She didn't ask, she stated, and Kohmus was used to that. She had been an almost constant presence in his life and he had grown used to her as she had to him.

"Yes. My friend, I have mentioned her, Nerfert." She nodded the shadows he used to love to chase around swirling around her and always relaxed me to see. "I have...I think..." I can not continue and trail off. I can't tell how long we both stand there before she speaks.

"I haven't seen you tongue tied since your coordination." Kohmus groaned at the gentle teasing of the goddess he had considered as a parent since he was but a toddler. Three or four at the oldest, but despite the embarrassment of remembering that day he was glad to experience something so normal as her teasing him with that gentle smirk.

I groan at the remembrance and shake my head. I must get this over with quickly. "I...Nerfert she is, special to me. And mother, I want to know what you think? How does one tell if someone they have come to care for and beloved wishes the same for them?" I can feel the fear swirl in me, "that she...not be afraid if she doesn't want me that she has nothing to fear because of my position." She seemed shocked and I couldn't blame her, in me nineteen years of life I had never loved, not that kind of love.

"You've come to love her?" Kohmus's heart beat faster as he thought to that. He had never liked someone like that and it was shocking to him and worried him but he knew that if he could talk to someone about it, and he could think of anyone better then his mom.

"Yes, yes I have. Not like a friend or family member but like a...like a lover." It felt good, uplifting, to say.

Well that was fun to write. This one short is a collab with Calintha who has written Heart of Ashes, which I highly recommend. /story/170458139-heart-of-ashes

That as well as the rest of her Mythological Hearts series takes place in the same universe as my series of stories. Especially if you enjoy Sands of Time since a lot of hints show up in Heart of Ashes and vice versa.
