"Judging by how close whoever they are," Bruno began, gesturing to the people walking in the distance, "I'd say our best chance is to fight. But do something for me: bring Vanessa back to the meeting room."
"The meeting room?"
"It's the same room that Grey brought you to the first time you came here," Bruno explained, keeping his sight fixated on the people walking toward us. By now, I could clearly tell that there were fourteen of them.
"Okay," I answered.
"And the rest of them inside there are coming to fight too. We're gonna win this," Bruno said.
"Yes. We will." The confidence in my words weren't reflecting on the inside, but I decided this lie was one that was okay to tell.
I imagined myself appearing in the meeting room with Vanessa by my side, and raised my right hands. In the blink of an eye I was standing in the heated room.
Vanessa was laying on the ground at my side, her body limp.
"It's gonna be okay," I whispered. "We'll be alright."
I then lifted her up onto the table. I stared down at her face for a moment, overwhelmed by her beauty.
Slowly, I leaned down and brushed my lips against her forehead. I lifted my lips off and looked down upon her once more.
"I'm truly sorry," I whispered. I'd seen violence in my life, and I had killed people, but I truly felt bad. No one as good and pure as Vanessa deserved to be caught up in something that was because of me. And I was going to stop it right now.
I imagined myself appearing back in the field next to Bruno and then raised my hand, leaving Vanessa alone.
When I was standing in the frigid November air once again, I spotted a furious Grey and a worried Bruno. The rest of the men who had come to fight just looked annoyed.
"What's goin' on?" I called to them. Grey turned to look at me.
"You dumbo's thought that the people going to attack you would just walk toward you, giving you plenty of lead that they were going to attack you? No! That's not it!" He was furious, although I couldn't figure out why.
"What's going on Grey?" I asked, my eyes scrunching. He shook his head and signaled to his left. Towards the edge of the field was a woman, lying motionless. Her hair was long and brown, sprawled out across the earth just like Vanessa's was when we first found her."Who is that? Is she dead?" I asked, looking back and forth between her and Grey.
"Yes she is dead! And she is a close friend of mine," Grey said. The gleam in his eyes send chills down my spine. He looked like he could kill someone. But under all the anger, was sadness - the quivering of a lip, the tears forming in his eyes.
"Grey, it's going to be okay," I reassured, walking over and patting him on the back. The people around us stared, unsure of what to do.
The chilled air tried to snake it's way under my jacket.
"No it's not. That's a complete and utter lie, and it makes it all worse because you know that it won't be okay. This isn't a video game where once you die or get injured you can just regenerate. There's so much at stake, but you don't see it. You just don't see it." His voice wasn't angry. It was tired.
"I'm sorry," I said. "But I need you t' know that I understand what is happening. I know what you are talking about. I've been confronted with so much violence in my life and done terrible things. I know more about it than you might assume."
The others around us still remained quiet, some kicking at the dead grass uncomfortably.
"I know that. But for some reason even though you've seen so much violence, you still are terrified every time you see it. It makes no sense. You've killed so many mass murderer's yet when you see someone whipping slaves, you can't contain yourself and you storm up emotionally, try to stop it, and nearly get yourself killed. It makes no sense and you need to learn to control yourself," Grey said. His face had begun to tint red. I was making him angry.I opened my mouth to begin to answer when Bruno grabbed me.
"Hey, why don't we go inside and do something productive to find your mother. We got the force field fixed again, so instead of wasting our time fighting and freezing our butts off, lets do something." The people around us nodded their consent
"You got the force field fixed?" I asked.
"Yes. We all take turns holding up the force field for the same amount of time. Vanessa had been keeping it up and invisible when whoever was trying to get in attacked it. The attacks they sent to the force field took a toll on her. It's tiring enough to just hold up the force field. So whatever they attacked her with it was enough to sent her into the state of unconsciousness she's in," Bruno explained. Then, all around us everyone disappeared.
I imagined myself appearing in the room I was just in, and then raised my right hand, doing the same as the rest of them. Bruno's explanation turned over and over in my head the entire time.
When I was once again in the meeting room, Grey and his friends led me out of the room and further down the hallway to a different door.
Inside, the room was small, barely fitting all of us. Covering the walls were screens, each the same size, each showing a different image.
Some showed images of dirt paths, others showed cobblestone streets, and others showed fields or the forest.
"These are all the possible places that your mother may be. We've been watching them for a while now," Grey explained.
"What about Vanessa?" I cut in. He shot me a look before answering.
"Vanessa is being healed right now. Focus on this."
I nodded. The sheer amount of possibilities for where my mother could be was overwhelming."So do we just look around to see if we she's in any of these places?"
"Theoretically, yes, she could be seen although we don't know for sure," Grey answered, squinting at one of the screens.
"Okay." It seemed hopeless, but I did it anyway, focusing on the screens attached to the left wall. It was the only thing I had that would help make any progress.
As I studied the screens, I saw nothing. The only movement I witnessed was a rat scurrying across an abandoned street.
"Are you sure this could help?" I asked to no one in particular.
"Yes," Bruno answered. "It could very well help."
I grunted but kept looking.About five minutes later, a gasp filled the room causing my heart to begin pumping once more.
"What is it?" I asked, my voice shaking slightly.
"It's your mother."

And here is chapter twenty! I'd just like to apologize for the extra long wait. I explained it a bit on my message board, although I'm not sure if you checked it so basically, I have been sick for a while and the past few days I've had these insane migraines, making writing nearly impossible. School was also a bit insane last week, so I didn't have much time to write.
I hope you guys enjoyed this chapter!
Any thoughts on Bruno's character? What about Grey? Do you guys believe that Grey is good or bad? Do you think that they will succeed in rescuing Ryder's mother? Also, just as a note, I'll be adding when the next Uncontrollable update is in my bio, although the best way to find out is to follow me; I usually post things on my message board or status.
Please don't forget to vote or comment if you enjoyed!
Thanks for reading.
