You watch as he carefully crouched down and rolled the bomb into the mechanical tubing. "Fits perfectly," he mused. "Stand back."
The both of you back up a few steps and watch as the bomb detonated on Link's command. The cannon emitted a deafening bang and rocketed a flaming ball of fire straight forward, landing on a pile of loose rocks, and completely demolishing them.
Both you and Link stared wide-eyed at the force.
The rocks surfaced a blowhole underground pushing out air and steam. Link's eyes traced a potential path before he nodded surely. "If we paraglide there--" he points to the steam-- "and sail to that platform, we could make it to that building in the back of the mine. That must be what we're looking for."
"Woah woah woah," you wave your hands. "You're asking us to paraglide over lava?! Not a chance."
"Do you have a better--?"
"And how can you be so sure that's what we're looking for? What if we make it over there, find out we were wrong, and then find out we're stuck?"
"Hey, calm down!" he panicked and frantically looked around. His gaze landed on a goron miner, hardhat and pickaxe in hand. "Let's just ask."
Link jumps off the cannon's platform and hastily walks towards the goron. You follow hesitantly with a nervous feeling looming above you. "Hey, excuse me?" Link calls to the stranger.
The goron notices the approaching hylian and sighs with rolling eyes. "Yeesh," he groans rudely, "What's goin' on today? So many people out and about! You should know it gets much hotter past here, and there are also loooots of monsters. It's reeeeeally dangerous."
"Do you know Yunobo?" Link asks, which wasn't the question the worker was expecting.
"Why is a stranger like yoooou asking about Yunobo?"
"Boss wants to know."
The goron gasps with a dropping jaw. "Huh?! Boss does?! Well... then I guess I better tell you wheeeeere Yunobo is!" He turns and points to the same building Link suggested moments ago. "Yunobo went to the vault to fetch some painkillers. But now that you mention it, I suppooooose he never came back."
Link turned around with a soft, fixed expression. You break eye contact and stare at the stone ground, seriously wishing he didn't turn out to be right. "This place is daaaaangerous, so ya probably shouldn't go lookin' for him," he goron concludes.
Link turned so he completely faced you. "We don't have to go that way if you really don't want to. We can find another route."
You looked anywhere else so you wouldn't have to make eye contact. Your eyes raked over the obstacles behind him, scanning for any other options. There wasn't any, and Link probably already knew that as well. "It's fine," you shake your head. "I'll just suck it up and tough it out."
He nods with a determined smile and leads you past the goron and back to the cannon, completely ignoring the worker's advice. You both position yourselves on the edge, ready to glide. "On three," he says. "One, two--"
"Wait!" You blurt, gripping the wooden handles of your paraglider you were about to unfold. Link turns in worry. "The gliders, won't they catch on fire again?"
Link curses under his breath. "You're right," he murmured with his eyes casting to the corner of his vision, recalling the way the both of you horribly found out the fact. "Didn't the fire vanish once we drank the elixirs? Maybe the heat resistance properties also affect the things we have on us, like our clothes and possibly our gliders."
"But our elixirs wore off," you remind and think for a second. "Do you think the heat resistance in the Flamebreaker armor?"
"It's not impossible," he shrugs.
You nod and stare at the ground, making a serious decision. "Okay," you speak, "let's do this."
After Link's count of three, the both of you jump from the platform, aiming for the next. Your grip on the handles tighten as you brace for a rising heat, but it didn't come. You both land safely on your feet, completely unharmed by unwanted flames.
"I have..." you give yourself a moment to calm your racing heart... "never been so relieved that... you were right."
"Are you implying something?"
"No," you wave him off. "Not at all." You straighten up and roll your shoulders, readying yourself for another go at gliding. "After you," you nod towards the gale.
"'Kay," he runs and jumps into the steam, unfolding his glider with a flourish. "Follow me!" He calls over the howling wind.
You jump into the breeze after him. The wind pushes against the cloth glider, pulling you higher and higher, away from the lava that burned your eyes to look at. You lean forward and glide after Link towards the next mound of rock holding a metal piece bridge straight towards the final destination.
With a metal thunk, you land on the stone entrance of the vault, which was covered in searing hot rock. "Please..." a voice whimpers from inside. "Someone please help me."
"Yunobo?" You call towards the vault. "Is that you? Yunobo?"
The unfamiliar voice stops crying. "Hello?" he calls back with a clearer voice resulting form turning towards the exit. "Is someone there?"
"Yes! Hello! My friend and I are here to get you out!" you announce. Behind you, Link spots another cannon on another island of rock.
"I'll go use the cannon," Link says. "Get away from the entrance."
"The cannons?" Yunobo gasps from inside. "But you won't know how! Those are Boss' cannons!"
"Don't worry," you assure him, but go unheard since you retreated to the other side of the bridge, out of the way. Link paraglides to the cannon and climbs atop of the platform. You watch as he inserts a remote bomb into the system and strikes the lever with his sword.
The cannon, however, rotates way past the ideal point of trajectory, past the targeted vault. He frowns, realizing he was going to have to time things just right, and strikes the lever again. Just as the cannon passes over the rock blocked entrance, he detonates the bomb and hits the rock blocking entrance with a bull's eye.
The stone smashes and rolls away from the doorway, revealing Yunobo inside. He faced away from the door with his ears covered, shaking from head to toe with a geometrical, orange glow around him.
The magic vanishes on his command and he chances a glance behind him to find you and Link peering inside. He gasps and turns around fully. "Gah!" he exclaims, "I thought you were monsters!"
You instantly notice his champion blue garb tied around his shoulders, similar to yours, but without the hood and different white designs.
"You were the ones who rescued me right?" he says animatedly with a youthful voice. "Thank you so much, brothers! But what brought you all the way out here to begin with?"
"Boss told us to come and find you," Link explains.
"Oh! I should've guessed," Yunobo gasps. "Thank goodness. I'm so glad you saved me, goro! The name's Yunobo. Though you knew that... Everyone calls me Yunobo. Makes sense..." he trails off as he realizes his redundancy. "Uh.. anyway... I've never seen-- uh, you before! Who are-- what's your names, goro?"
"I'm (Y/N), this is Link," you say and point to each of you.
"(Y/N) and Link! Great pair of names! Familiar... pair of names..." he mutters. "Uh, well, I came to get some painkillers for Boss, but a magma bomb caused a rockslide and sealed the entrance, goro. Ack, I just remembered! Sorry, gotta run! But do come by and see the Boss later, okay? He may be gruff, but he always returns a favor. I'm sure there's a reward. Okay, good bye for now, goro!"Yunobo runs out the entrance with a wave and tucks himself into a ball, rolling down the hills of the back of the island.
