"no," she chuckled. "but he did, up until his dying day. even when i was briefly engaged, he'd ask when i was going to end it and hunt you down."

"how's your family doing?" she cut through.

"well, my, uh, my father passed away..."

"oh joseph, sweet boy, i'm so sorry! i know how much he had meant to you."

"yeah." pause. "do you ever miss who we were and the family we had that first summer."

"how, um... how is your schedule for the next week?"

"next week? well, i don't really have anything going on, i suppose, besides getting everything unpacked and settling back into my apartment after a lot of traveling. why?"

"well, um, i'm going to be in new york, and i thought it would be neat to catch up over some coffee? maybe, possibly?"

"i agree, that would indeed be neat."

"great," she smiled.
