You weren't focusing on what was going on around you. This was mainly due to the fact that your rash was now being irritated by a damp helmet strap. You growled, trying to rub your neck awkwardly against your shoulder so you wouldn't have to let go of your paddle. This didn't seem to be working for you, so you balanced the paddle against the side of the raft, and pulled the helmet strap up onto your chin to give your rash a quick itch. Just a quick itch couldn't hurt, right? Wrong.
"Now!" You heard Ava yell. A completely unprepared you, felt the entire raft jolt to the right. You yelped as you crashed into the side of the raft, your helmet flying off your head and plopping into the water. The turn also caused the paddle to start to fly over the edge. Without thinking, you bent over the side of the raft in an attempt to snatch back the paddle. The raft again lurched to the right, and you went flying into the rushing water. Immediately you were sucked far underwater. The rapids were pulling you every which way. You became disoriented, not knowing up from down. The cold water pierced your senses, and a pain began to build in your head. Now your body was slamming into rocks left and right; you were losing your breath that you were desperately trying to keep in.
You began to paddle fiercely, hoping it would bring you to the surface. Remember your safety training, what did they say to do? You thought frantically. Before you had a chance to rise for a gasp of fresh air, or even remember your safety training, your head collided with a rock and you instantly blacked out.
You remember waking up briefly, seeing flashing lights, hearing people yelling things around you. They sounded panicked- why? You felt different, why did you feel so weird? Your head held a searing pain. A pain unlike any other you'd ever felt that caused you to again, pass out.
The second time you woke up, you heard an obnoxious beeping noise. You slowly reached a hand up to your head to feel a sort of cloth wrapped tightly around it. Your entire body felt sore. You hesitantly opened your eyes, revealing your parents asleep next to the bed you were laying in. You looked around not sure what was going on, or what had happened. You were in a hospital, you knew that much. You could tell from all the hospital equipment around you. You strained your memory, and suddenly you remembered. You had been in an accident.
"Hello?" Your voice croaked out as you glanced at your parents. You rubbed your throat, looking around. Your throat was extremely dry, you needed some water. "Mum? Dad?" You questioned, looking them over. When no one answered you, you grabbed your IV cart next to your bed, and forced yourself to stand. You pulled off the pads that were taped to your chest from the heart monitor and it began to flatline, indicating your heart had stopped. This caused a loud noise to emit from it and a couple people sprinted into the room. As this was happening, it caused your parents to wake up, looking very distraught and panicked.
"I was just really thirsty." You told the doctors, who laughed in relief and ordered you back into bed. Then, they got you an entire pitcher of ice cold water and told you not to mess with any of your equipment again. Bossy... was all you could think.
When things had calmed down a bit, you decided to figure out exactly what had happened while you were passed out. So, you interrogated your parents for answers and they explained what had happened. They never said how you ended up in the hospital, just that you had an accident, but they did let you in on how the doctors were treating you.
"So, brain surgery?" You asked your parents, sipping on your straw for more water. You surprisingly didn't care that all this had happened. All you could think about was finishing the route at the white water rafting place. You didn't get to fully experience the rapids.
"Yes, you hit your head pretty hard which caused bleeding in your temporal lobe. The doctor's said you shouldn't have any permanent damage, but they also said they couldn't be certain until after you woke up." Your mum explained, clasping your hand in hers. You looked at her confused for a moment.
