Finally, after what seemed like forever, I spoke up: "So... They're gone, now?"
It had taken 049 a few seconds to muster up a response. "Yes. Though I still would've liked to help them."
Lifting up a hand, doing my best to ignore the light hint of rose on my face due to the fact that he was still so close, I placed it on the side of one of his shoulders. "It's okay... You'll be able to when we get out of here. You'll find that cure."
Or would he? I doubted it. I couldn't even really completely believe him about his 'disease' and his 'cure.' But I can't say that. Who knows how he's react, especially given how hostile he had gotten when I referred to it as 'killing.'
The anomaly gave a nod in return. "Oh, yes, of course. Then they'll see that I was right..." He rotated away from me in a sluggish manner, lumbering down the halls once more as he spoke with his words full of air. "And they were wrong."
Personally, I didn't like how eerie that sounded, but I pushed it off as much as I could, peeling myself off of the wall and hurrying to catch up with him before falling to his side once more.
Just as I was about to respond, I suddenly heard what seemed like chirping, almost, from behind me. Twisting my upper half to look behind us, we had both stopped, and he had done the same.
Approaching us at relatively fast speeds were two tear-dropped things with large, glossy eyes in the front of them. I could hear faint whirring as those said eyes moved, glancing at each other before up at us, then focusing on me.
How they moved, and what they were, I didn't know, but I did not have the time to think about that as they encircled my feet a few times before getting on the side of me opposite of 049. They squeaked and chirped up at me as if they were in some sort of alarm.
I stared down at them in confusion, hoping they weren't dangerous, and watched as they backed away as soon as 049 had taken a few steps past the front of me to near them. Such a thing had caused him to stop, but the two little things hadn't quit making their noises at me.
Do they think he's dange— Well, they wouldn't be wrong. "Uh..." I wasn't really sure what to make of them, or what they were specifically trying to say.
All of a sudden, I then heard a sound that was like concrete scraping against the floor coming down at us at rapid speeds. My head shot up, and I couldn't help but jump back at what I had seen.049 had immediately stepped in front of me, the little teardrops underneath us still squeaking in a panic, even brushing up against my feet a few times.
I just stared at it from faintly behind the doctor, an urge to just turn around and escape while I was out of view tugging at me. You can't just leave him! I tried to fight against it. You're in this shithole together now!
"Aw, come on, just look away for a second. I'll treat you right~" A voice sounded, and I knew it could only be from that statue.
"What are you? What do you want?" The plague doctor's tone was suddenly hard, and I could feel the intensity radiating from his aura.
"The nerds here like to refer to me as SCP-173, cutie~" He replied, and I could see 049's fingers furl a bit at the pet-name. "But that won't matter here in a bit."
"Leave me alone," the one protecting me ordered. "I'm no harm to you."
A laugh came from him. "Of course not! But that doesn't mean I can't have a little fun with the bones in your neck, right?"
Peaking out from behind 049 to get a look at the statue, I seemed to have grabbed his attention, an ecstatic tone entering his voice. "Oh, look at you! Aren't you just adorable?" His focus switched to 049, though there was no movement present to indicate as such, so I just relied on his words to confirm that. "You're a lucky one, birdie! Tell me, now, how long have you two been together?"
My face heated rapidly, eyes widening even more if even possible at that point. "W-We're not..."
"There's nothing, ah... Going on, mind you." I could tell that even the doctor was at least slightly embarrassed by the implication. "Just working together to get out of here."
I knew that was true, but... Why did that last part hurt a little? I can't be hoping for more, no... No way—
"Really?" 173 whined out. "That's disappointing." A slight pause. "Tell you what: I like you two! How about I tag along for a little bit until I find a point of interest?"
049 shook his head lightly. "Not necessary."
"I'll pass," I spoke up, seeing as I had been quiet for the most part.
"Fine," the statue began, "then I'll just crush your windpipes the first chance I get."
My lips pursed, and the Hershey-kissed-shaped anomalies underneath me started their noises once more. I stepped a bit to the side of the plague doctor, looking up at him. "Just... Let him come."
He eyes immediately snapped down to me. "Pardon?"
"I'm sure it won't take long for him to find something— Or, er, somebody— To chase down." I did my best to keep a serious tone of voice, despite the fear regulating throughout my form. "And if he's being honest, then he won't murder us."
"If you don't trust me, then you should! I haven't moved at all while you two aren't looking at me. Or the 131's down there." 173 spoke up once more.
I shifted my focus on the statue. "A-And that means...?"
He gave somewhat of a nervous chuckle. "Don't know how I function, eh? I can't move when something's looking at me. So if you even blink, I'll be able to move. And I don't mean to brag, but I'm pretty fast~"
Both 049 and were silent for a long moment before the doctor finally replied to me. "I can't say I particularly trust the statue, but I suppose we don't have much of a choice, do we?"
I gave him a shrug. "Not really planning on dying because of a lump of concrete."
"You know I can hear you? I'm more sensitive than you think, you know!" 173 exclaimed, and when I heard him shift closer to us, I had naturally flinched a bit in reaction.
"No time to waste at a time and place like this, yes?" 049 offered, still looking at me.
I gave a glance at 173, and then nodded, my mind returning to those files my past self had written. "Yeah. Before anything else comes along..."
