The Blind Banker: Chapter 5

Start from the beginning

"Those symbols at the bank, the graffiti, why were they put there?" Sherlock asked John, and you stood watching, almost cheering John on.

"As some sort of code?' John guessed and your hope in him died a little more. He was still giving you and Sherlock ordinary answers. He'd get there... eventually. Hopefully.

"Obviously." You and Sherlock both told him.

"Why were they painted? Want to communicate, why not use email?" You asked John, trying to assist Sherlock to get a decent answer from John. Sherlock had now begun to look through Van Coon's jacket just like you had been doing earlier.

"Well, maybe he wasn't answering." John stated, glancing at Van Coon for a moment before he looked at you. You sat on the corner of the bed, smiling slightly. That stupid grin again.

"Oh, good, you follow!" You told him, face back to deadpan. He gave you a weird look, before shaking his head slightly. Did he notice your internal battle with your face?

"No." He stated, gazing at Sherlock as he was now going through Van Coon's pants pockets, which looked a bit odd as his arm was bent in an awkward position.

"What kind of message would everyone try to avoid?" Sherlock asked, leaning over Van Coon's body to get a look at his left hand. John looked up at the ceiling, seeming to be in thought.

"What about this morning? Those letters you were looking at?" Sherlock asked, reaching two of his fingers into Van Coon's mouth.

"Bills?" John inquired, watching Sherlock with a strange look as he was looking inside of Van Coon's mouth.

"You missed something." Sherlock looked up at you with just a hint of a smile, you sighed bowing your head. You didn't really have enough time to do a full check over Van Coon, before Sherlock called you over to look at the case. Maybe he'd meant to get you away from the body so he could solve the case earlier. You narrowed your eyes skeptically at him.

"Shut up." You told him as he began to reach for whatever he found in Van Coon's mouth.

"Wait!" You told him. "Don't do that with your fingers, you could push it further down into his trachea." You hurried towards a member of the forensic team and asked them for a pair of forceps. They handed you a pair and you bumped Sherlock to the side. He looked grumpy as you carefully pulled Van Coon's chin downward and withdrew the object from his mouth. You held it up, studying it as you turned the forceps side to side. It looked to be some sort of crumbled up black paper. Sherlock's grumpy look vanished as he looked at the paper.

"He was being threatened." Sherlock examined the paper further, with a grin. John leaned to get a closer look, a disgusted expression on his face.

"Not by the Gas Board." John stated. You grabbed an evidence bag with your free hand, gesturing for Sherlock to hold it open for you. He did and you lowered it into the bag, making sure it was properly sealed. You let Sherlock take it as you returned to forceps to their owner. You heard voices coming from down the hall and a man entered the room. You studied him, realizing he was probably just another sergeant from the police department.

The man stopped to look over the three of you with a resentful look on his face.

"Sergeant, we haven't met." Sherlock said after a moment's pause of the three of you staring at him. Sherlock pulled off his right glove before he made his way over to the man.

"Yeah, I know who you are." The man stated, placing a hand scoldingly on his hip. Sherlock stretched out his hand, offering it to the man. "And I'd prefer it if you didn't tamper with any of the evidence." Sherlock awkwardly lowered his hand in surprise as the Sergeant stared hard faced at Sherlock. You instantly disliked him. Sherlock handed the man the evidence bag, glancing momentarily at you.
