Chapter Twenty-Seven

Start from the beginning

"Trent had his intentions clear from the beginning: create equal rights for the poor. And he would do anything to get it. As a teen he got locked up, beaten, tortured, and once almost executed for all of the crimes he committed. He did anything he could to prove that the wealthy and the king did not control him. When he was fifteen, he set a fire in the palace of the king. As he was leaving, the guards caught him. They took his powers and locked him away without food for two days. His brother visited once and Trent coerced him into stealing them back. As he grew older, though, he stopped with the mischievousness. He knew that if he wanted to make an impact, he needed to manage to get a high position in the government.

"By this point in his life, he was around sixteen. He devoted his time to studying and educating himself. He would sneak into abandoned schoolhouses for children and practice spells with all the old tools that the children used themselves."

I had been trying to contain my questions until the end while I listened intently, but I felt lost without knowing some of the information.

"Just quickly can you explain the Capital a bit more to me. What was school for children? What was the law enforcement like? What is the palace of the king; wouldn't Grey be living there? How did the poor come up?"

Vanessa looked almost relieved at switching topics for a few seconds.

"I'd love to. School for kids living in wizarding towns isn't like school that you go to. It's mostly training them in spells, defense, and history on how wizards came to be and wizards past. The poor weren't allowed to go to school. The law enforcement was brutal if you were poverty-stricken. They could do whatever they wanted to you and the king would allow it. If you had money and a status, though, then it wasn't very bad. Although if you had all that there wouldn't be any reasons for you to break the rules. It was a messed up society. The palace of a king is exactly what the name says; a palace for the current king. Grey doesn't live their because he told them he didn't want to. He still has to deal with the Capital issues and go to meetings but he tries to remove himself from that as much as possible. And the poor are mostly the ones with weaker magic or no magic at all who couldn't get along in society. Is that enough information?"

I nodded, still trying to process it all.

"One more question!" I exclaimed as it came to mind.

"Okay," Vanessa said impatiently.

"So this war that Grey claims is going to happen; he was saying that it was the authorities and law enforcement that are the issue. How does this make any sense?"

I smiled a triumphant smile when Vanessa faltered slightly before answering.

"Quite honestly, he's not told me any different from what he told you and I'm not too sure I believe what he said either although I haven't been able to find out any other information about it. But what he's claiming is that as his time as king went on, the law enforcement disagreed with the amount of time he spends out of the city and by now just do whatever they please and don't listen to him because of that. That is his own issue though."

Vanessa's tone clearly ended that conversation.

"So as I was saying," Vanessa started once more, "Trent had dove into his studies. As he practiced magic more and more, it became clear that he had more power than anyone expected. He could use multiple different types of magic: water, fire, wind, earth, and telekinesis. Just like you. This gave him a great advantage when trying to-"

Vanessa's voice was cut off by a loud siren blaring through the library.

"What's going on?" I asked, jumping up from my seat. Vanessa and Bruno were both on their feet as well.

The look in their eyes were both equally grave. Without answering my question, they sprinted out of the library. I followed, trying to figure out what the alarm could mean.

As we burst into the hallway, more people were running around frantically; many more people than I'd seen in the Base before. I made a mental note to explore more of the Base later.

A few commanding screams came from our right, and everyone surged toward us.

"Run against them," Bruno ordered. We did as he said and they parted slightly for us to get through as the rushed the opposite direction.

"What is going on?" I screamed once more as we reached the stairs that lead to the woods.

"That alarm," Vanessa said while breathing heavily, "means that an unwanted force has broken through the force field."
