I nodded firmly. "Yes, I'm—"
The elevator popped open once more, each door separating into the wall. It revealed a hallway that was void of light, though the black hadn't quenched out my vision completely like the Maintenance Tunnels with those 966's.
However, what was like those tunnels was the noises that were being made from it.
"Take note: I don't like the elevators in this facility," I spoke, staring down into the darkness. "And I'm never going into another one again unless there's a big sign pointing 'exit' to it." Even then, that might be a little dumb to go down one as suspicious as that, huh?
"I suppose I share the same sentiments," he nearly hummed out.
Without warning, the anomaly started down the dark corridor, and I quickly tailed after him. Falling in beside him, I couldn't help but grow increasingly anxious.
What if there was more down here? More 966's? It wasn't like I had night vision goggles or anything that time, so I knew we would've been screwed. What if there's something worse than those things? Something faster, and more viscous? And the dark is its advantage?
I shook my head, clearing those thoughts. Whatever it was, I'd face it, and I'd make sure both he and I got out. There was no need to panic and cry like I used to, and wallow in my own worries of being useless. That never helped. Panicking didn't help.
We turned the corner cautiously, as we were uncertain as to what we were going to be faced with, if anything at all. So far, there wasn't anything. Save for the large crates that stood taller than I had, and all of the various things stacked and set about the place.
It seemed, from the looks of it, as if it were one giant storage unit. Despite that, I doubted there were any files or anything like that there. Everything seemed to be more of imports.
I had spotted a potted plant at some point, strangely, and there was also numerous cardboard boxes labelled "Fragile" and "Contains Toxic Material" and such. There was also wooden crates all over the place stuffed full with canned foods, and even piles of books strewn about.
All of the large crates were practically forming hallways, and we had no choice but to go down them. I wasn't sure what to make of the situation.
"Hello?"
My eyes widened, immediately going to 049. He... Isn't going berserk?
The both of us had ceased our movements, listening out for the voice again. It was weary in tone, and evidently masculine.
Nothing.
I spoke up, goosebumps proliferating down my arms. "You heard that, ri—"
"Is someone out there?"
It was definitely a person. There was no doubt about that.
049 gripped my wrist without inclination, causing my head to snap in his direction in question of the action. "Just in case," was his murmured reasoning. Whatever that was supposed to mean.
I gave no response, letting him carefully lead us in the direction of the voice that had been luring us. My free hand was clenched onto a fist, eyes darting everywhere for the first sign of a person.
"Should I call out?" I questioned to the doctor in a whisper.
I received a single nod in response, and nothing more.
"Uh..." I took a sharp inhale. "Hello?"
"Where are you?" It was much closer that time.
