"And it'd just want to kill me, right?" I asked as I swallowed and straightened myself.
"Ah, well..." A slight sigh escaped the doctor as he took a gentle hold of my wrist and began to slowly escort me down the hallway. "That mask is quite unpredictable. My best assumption would be that he would only seek us out for me, and would most certainly kill you if he were to find us." His grip on me had slightly tightened at the last part.
"Great," I muttered.
As we turned yet another corner, he briefly peered over his shoulder to me. There was something in his lovely blue eyes, though I was unable to make out what. "Of course, I wouldn't allow it."
I offered him a sluggish smile. "Yeah... Don't you worry about me. I've survived him once... I'll do it... Again..."
A curt nod came from him before he went back to looking ahead of us. "I have no doubt you will." His tone was calm.
No doubt that I'll what? I blinked a few times, my breaths being dragged out. Oh, yeah... Me. Living. Yeah. I shook my head and forced open my eyes. They felt dry and heavy.
The doctor seemed to stop. I was too focused on staying awake to really pay attention or care about why. Some tapping sounds were audible, and then a beep. What is that? One of my eyes closed. "I'm... I'm sorry... I..." I trailed off, my other eye following what the first had done. My knees were wobbling.
"Pardon?"
"I..." The last thing I felt was a solid surface pressing up against me and the scent of leathers before I was whisked away into unconsciousness.
I'm sorry I love you.
My eyes slowly fluttered open, a slight moan coming from me. As I gathered myself with what I had last remembered, it hadn't taken long for me to realise my position.
Two arms were wrapped around me as I was lying face-first against the doctor, being on his lap. Heat immediately came over me as I reeled back, and I was beginning to slip off of him. However, before I could, his grasp quickly tightened to keep me from crashing to the floor.
"W-What did I say about asking?" I stammered out through my slight haze.
"Oh, dear," he began, shifting his hold on me, "I wasn't aware it still applied."
My lips pursed for a second as I stare at him. "It... I guess it doesn't." My gaze averted from him.
A light chuckle escaped him. I was beginning to adjust to the sound of it. Something about it was oddly warm. "My, I must say, your flustered behaviours have always been quite the sight."
One of my hands flew up and slapped over one side of my face as I lowered my head, embarrassment only further etching my features. "S-Shut up..." It was barely audible.
"Shall we move on? You were resting for some time now," he changed the subject seemingly for my sake. For a moment there, I had even forgotten we were in a breach in a deadly Site.
I allowed silence to fall over us instead of providing an answer, heart hammering in my chest as I remained still where I was. I shouldn't feel this way. It's happened so fast... How do I even know it's not infatuation? I glanced at him warily. Even if it's real, I... I still have to do it. A bit of a smile came over me as I took my hand away from my face, lifting it to look back up at him. I might as well enjoy it while I can, then, right?
Leaning in, I went past the beak of his mask and planted another kiss on his mask. Slowly, I pulled back, beginning to trace his features with his eyes. "A shame your mask is in the way..."
