"Be careful, tesoro (darling)." I stood up to give him a soft kiss on the cheek. And while I was close to him, I took the chance to whisper a few words against his ear. "Be patient with her... Show her our story, she'll understand..." I left one final kiss on his cheek, and after gently caressing his hand, I allowed my legs to carry this old bag of bones back inside.
The house was so terribly quiet during his absence. So, I distracted myself as much as I possibly could, either brushing the horses or reading Mariana a book. The poor girl missed her parents terribly, that much I knew. But with some luck, Ezio would be able to find them and ask how things have been. Then again, that'd be terribly unlikely, given the fact that Templars could very well be watching the whole interaction. Ugh, it was so frustrating!! The whole afternoon went by, still with no news of the two. Until, as the sun began to set, Ezio burst into the house. I raised my gaze from my book, surprised at the sudden outburst. It even woke Mariana up with a start. "Pack some bags. You are staying at Machiavelli's tonight." Ezio said as he walked towards me.
"What on Earth happened?" I decided to ask as I stood from the couch.
"Templars. Jun took care of it, but there is a high chance that they might have followed us. There is no time to waste." Ezio was swift to explain the situation, and I immediately knew it was serious.
"At once. Wait... 'you' ? What about you, Ezio? Are you not coming too?" my eyes widened at the possibility. A few coughs prevented Ezio from replying, at least at first.
"I am staying here with Jun. It is safer."
"No...no way!" I shook my head. "Ezio, you're no longer 25! Are you sure you can handle yourself? What if these men were to attack? What if they-" I began rambling as the innumerable possibilities of this attack ran through my mind. But I was suddenly interrupted as I felt a gentle touch against my cheek. A hand, I realized. A hand I knew all too well.
"You need to watch over Mariana in my stead, amore mio (my love)...if these men do attack, I need to make sure the both of you are safe. Non ti preoccupare (Don't worry), we will not be parted for long..." and with that, he leaned forward, leaving a soft kiss against my forehead. "Now go. Go pack your bags. There is no time to waste."
"Ezio..." I breathed out. I pleaded. "I can't leave you here..."
"Tutto andrà bene, lo prometto (Everything will be alright, I promise)..." he cracked a smile. "Fidati di me (Trust me)..."
"I-I..." I hesitated. Of course I trusted him. It was his body that I didn't trust. A body withered away by the ravaging effects of time, that stole away his breathtaking agility and stamina. What if he wouldn't be able to defend himself? What if, upon returning, all we'd see was Ezio's corpse lying on a pool of his own blood? Still, I knew Jun was here. I knew she wouldn't let him die. And I knew that Ezio would fight to keep his promises. I eventually gave up, sighing softly. "I'll go pack. But you'd better be careful, understood?"
"Always." he smiled tenderly, and with one final kiss to his lips, I led Mariana upstairs so she could help me pack. It would be hard to stay away, but I knew it was the only solution if we wanted Mariana to stay alive. We left a few minutes later on a carriage, with only a small bag carrying our essentials, a tender kiss to my lips and Ezio's promises in my heart. You'd better be alive by the time we come back...
