When he had to carry his own sister to the nurses office, all Lucas could think about was that he was never going to be strong enough to protect Octavia. That maybe if he hadn't let her go, he could have prevented all of this. Octavia wouldn't have risen in his car going home, balling her eyes out. Lucas has seen her cry, but never over a boy— and he never wanted to see it again. It took everything in him not to board Adam at practice, but he was able to get in a few checks that got rid of twelve percent of his anger.
After they talked, Lucas said he wouldn't leave her side again, even at school, but Octavia told him no. She said that she appreciated it, but after everything, she was still going to think of him. She wanted him to keep his "friends" and reputation so nothing will go downhill. It took a lot of convincing, but he gave in. After all the crappy fights and petty games, she still put him first.
She always did.
She promised not to tell anyone when she accidentally walked in on him and his best friend. Scooter had come over to help him with history, and one thing led to another, they shared a kiss. Who knows what was going to happen if Octavia hadn't walked in thinking that he was all alone. She said she wasn't going to tell anyone, and she hasn't. And when she threatened to tell their parents about her walking in on him, it was not about him and Scooter. Octavia would never stand in the way of someone and the way they come out, she saw the struggle that Jenny went through. She had walked in on Lucas so many times that she wasn't even fazed anymore.
Octavia was always a good sibling to him, and as he laid her down on the mattress in the nurse's office, he vowed that no matter what, he was going to be the same.

Daren and his daughter had always been close. Even though he was a very busy man, he always made time for his children. He would go to every one of Lucas' games when he could, and would sit back and watch a movie with Octavia until late at night even if he had to get up early the next day. He would always put his family before everything, and he thought it was enough.
He thought that they'd told them everything. Whenever they had family dinners or car rides, he actually believed that what they told him was everything, and nothing was held back. What he failed to discover was that their children would keep so much more from him. Hell, he didn't even know that his own children weren't even talking to each other at school.
He couldn't even see how much everything had been weighing down on his own daughter. Sure, she'd always been good at putting on a mask and keeping people from seeing her real emotions, but she's his daughter for fucks sake. How the hell could he have not seen anything?
When she was younger, she would tell him everything. About the kids that she either liked or hated at school— the numbers being drastically different. She would always ask for his help with her schoolwork, and even when his help ended up being... not helpful, she didn't care. All Octavia wanted was to spend time with him, and she was always happy in the end. Hell, she even told him when she had her first (and for the next few years, only) crush. Sure, the only reason she liked him was because he punched a kid that pulled her ponytail, but hey, she was in fifth grade. He was just happy that she grew out of it.
Now tell him why she would tell him about that, and not everything that had been overwhelming her. God knows she has enough on her shoulders as it is with the classes she takes, she doesn't need another pile of crap layered over it.
The second that Daren got a call from the school, he knew something was off. His kids may have been a handful at some times, but they never got into enough trouble where their school needed to call them. When the woman on the phone told him the news, the phone slipped out of his hand like butter. The next few minutes had been a blur as he ran all over the place searching for his keys and wallet. His poor secretary was confused, but he didn't have time to explain anything. All he wanted to do was get to his baby girl.

Joanna's relationship with her daughter wasn't like the ones people usually saw in movies or shows. They weren't best friends and went to the mall together every weekend or got traditional mani pedi's. Joanna barely even remembered the last time that her and Octavia went out together and had a fun time. They could barely even go to the store together without fighting about what kind of cereal they should get. Which is why she prefers to bring Lucas along because all he does is push the cart and try to sneak chips or cookies in every five minutes.
It definitely wasn't that she liked Lucas more than Octavia, she doesn't. She loves her children equally unlike some mothers. She just spent more time with Lucas because she thought that he needed more help in some areas than Octavia. And it does help that he doesn't get in a fight with her after two minutes of talking.
It was just that, Octavia and her would have different opinions on some things. While Joanna thinks that she should participate more in school by joining a club or something, her daughter strongly disagrees. She would say about how she "doesn't want to be at that dumbass school any longer than she has to be." And after going to a parent teacher conference with a few of her teachers, Joanna could kind of see why. The amount of people that lit up when she said Lucas' name and then went back down at the mention of a Octavia was unbearable and yet not at all surprising.
Every one of her teachers complained about the fact that she was "too talkative" during class. The snide comments she would make under her breath, or the not so quiet ones she just said to their face. Once they would leave the room, Daren would laugh and say "that's Octavia for you." But Joanna had just about enough of it. Of course she wants her daughter to have her own opinion, but she doesn't want Octavia disrupting class just to say a few words. She wants her to grow into somewhat of a respectful lady, but that clearly hasn't happened yet.
But none of those stupid fights mattered at this moment. At this moment, all that mattered was getting to that damned school. She didn't care if she was speeding or if that may or may not have been a stop sign back there (no one was there, the police will live). She didn't care that she left in the middle of very important paperwork that will determine whether or not she'll be getting that promotion she's been working so hard towards. The only thing she cared about was her daughter.
