Chapter 85: Scarlet

Start from the beginning

Suddenly, there was a strike of pain that hit Levi. The raven leant forward, one hand holding his chest and the other gripping his head, pulling his ebony locks. A low groan escaped his lips, his whole body aching with a pain he had never felt before in his whole life.

Mikasa opened her eyes to the strained noise, eyebrows furrowing with worry as she watched Levi double over, his head pushing down on the ground.

"What's wrong?" She asked, fighting back pain as she used her arm as a support to lean up, gazing anxiously at Levi.

Levi only shook his head in response; he was in too much agony to be able to think of an answer or even use his mouth to speak. Mikasa reached out and placed her hand on his shaking back, gently rubbing it as she tried to think of a reason why her cousin could be in this much pain.

As Mikasa pondered silently while continuing her pats, Levi had already figured out what was causing all this.

The Ackerman wolf.

As the only living male in the Ackerman bloodline, Levi had been told and raised to be next in line for the position of Lord. He remembered Kenny briefly mentioning how the transfer of the Ackerman wolf into a new lord was painful, but Levi didn't think it would hurt this much.

But there was a part of Levi that was grateful. The pain was helping him temporarily forget all the sins he had committed today.

Even if it is just for a few seconds.

Suddenly, without any warning, there was a sound of a faint gunshot in the distance, followed by a high pitched whistle that travelled high into the sky. Both Ackermans looked up in surprise, blinking away as a red light abruptly flashed brightly.

Another gunshot rung in the air, sounding much closer this time, followed by a much louder shrill whistle.

Two red flares burned in the sky for a good amount of time. Mikasa glanced at the second flare that was shot, realizing that it was shot from the direction of their group's cabin. Her gray eyes flickered towards the other flare that came from one side of the cliff- the first one that was shot. A wave of confusion and dread surged through her body as she watched the red light slowly die out.

'If the second one was shot by someone at our cabin, then who shot the first one...?'

A low groan from behind Mikasa made her glance back, only to see Levi facing up with his eyes closed and his hand on his head. "...You okay?"

The male clicked his tongue, his chest heaving as he took deep breaths. "Kenny-" he breathed out, cut short by the lack of air in his lungs. "Kenny's dead."

Mikasa's eyes widened. As an Ackerman, she should've felt the disconnection between her and her Lord if he or she were ever to die. Unless... her refusal to bow down to him before really did get her kicked out of the Ackerman pack. And with Erwin gone and the future of Wings Senior High's small pack uncertain, Mikasa now is as good as an alpha-less and pack-less wolf.

A loner.

And though the blood flows within her veins, she no longer has the rights to call herself an Ackerman in the werewolf world.

Mikasa gazed at Levi, who was staring silently at the cliff, and debated whether she should pledge her loyalty to him as the new lord and regain her position in the pack as well as her clan name.

But faint sounds of helicopters approaching made her choose otherwise. Perhaps she will one day, but now's not the time.

"(Y/N)...." A pained look stretched across Levi's face as he gazed at the edge of the platform, an arm held tightly against his bleeding stomach. Sadness clouded Mikasa's grey orbs as flashes of her friend's final moments before falling replayed in her head.
