"But what made you want to come back? Wasn't your mom saying about how you refused to go back?"
"Oh! One day I got detention and then... What?" I frowned at their wide eyes.
Sam dramatically wiped a tear. "First detention, then sneaking out and getting shot? You're growing up." His sister playfully nudged him and he almost fell out of the booth. "I mean, you skipped a few steps in between, but you have the right idea!"
"And this scrawny kid is on the football team? Man, I've missed a lot," Sam sighed. A somber silence set in and I realized how right he was. It sucked that we didn't grow up together and missed so much of each other's lives.
"Alrighty, we have three burgers and a chicken sandwich. Two milkshakes, a coke, and a lemonade. Anything else?" Natalie set down the food, breaking the silence. I felt thankful. She winked at me before heading over to the booth behind.
I eagerly watched as they took a bite. I did the same thing when I brought Dylan and Justin here, but both gave mediocre reactions at best.
"Oh my God," Sam moaned with a mouthful of his burger. "Ary, this is seriously good."
Sara swallowed before talking. "Sammy, don't talk with your mouth full, it's disgusting. Ary, this is so good!" She was the one who opted for the chicken sandwich, something I've never tasted before. She held it out so I could take a bite and it was pretty good. Chick Fil A would definitely beat it, but this was a close second.
Sam and I were both the ones who dipped our fries in our shakes. He was the one who introduced it to me actually. Sara and my brother were completely unimpressed, but they were used to it.
We gobbled down our meals and when Natalie stopped by our table again, I asked if she could take a picture of the four of us. She was more than happy to and we leaned in to get into the frame.
"Cute," she laughed before handing me my phone back. I immediately texted it in our cousin group chat, along with sending it to the parentals.
I squeezed out of the booth after Justin stubbornly refused to let me out. Rolling my eyes, I headed to the cash register to pay. Natalie narrowed her eyes at me, daring me to try.
"I got this Ary," Sam said from behind me. "Don't even try to."
I rolled my eyes again and let him pay. Luckily she didn't put up a fight this time and took his card without argument. I subtly stuck my tongue out at her as we made our way back to the table and she just giggled and shook her head.
"Let's go," I chirped, dangling my keys. It was a mistake though because Sam grabbed them out of my hand and made a run for my car. "No!" I screamed, chasing after him.
It was too late. He was already sitting in the driver's seat. He locked his door and turned on the car, rolling down the windows. "Come on Ary, let me drive!"
"Sammy, please," I begged. He rolled his eyes and rolled the window up again. After sighing in defeat, I sat on the passenger side.
Let's just say Sam was one of the worst drivers I've ever experienced. He was super arrogant on the road and made risky decisions. Not only would be speed, he'd tailgate and swerve through the lanes.
Needless to say, the three of us were screaming bloody murder.
"You asshole, I'm never letting you drive," I huffed when the car was safely parked on the driveway. He sheepishly grinned and handed me my keys back. "Auntie, who the hell gave your son his license?" I yelled as soon as I walked into the house. My father's car wasn't on the driveway, meaning he was still out.
