"We all know I should be in there with you." I'm not letting this go. "This is my family, Rick!"
"And that's my family! You are the only one out there that will be able to protect them. Beth is caring for Judith, Hershel will be looking after Beth. I need you to look after Carl! If things go to shit in here, you need to protect them. Be their leader. Take care of Judith, be her mom." Rick steps closer to me. His eyes have clouded over thinking about the loss of his children. Taking my hand, he whispers.
"Please." Not wanting to fight and understanding his decision, I agree. Ricks then leaves the two of us alone.
"You should've told me, wouldn't have fought him like that if I knew his motive." Daryl places a hand on my cheek.
"He knew you'd put up a fight, but he also knew his reasons. That's why he's a good leader.
"Yeah. Be safe." My voice fails me, cracking.
"We'll be fine. Promise, if not, I'll find you. I'll always find you." He pulls my head forward, kissing it. Closing my eyes savoring the moment, I nod. Leaving each other's comfort, I call for Hershel, Beth, and Carl. We all climb into my jeep. Hershel in front with me, Carl, Beth, and Judith in the back, starting the car, Rick opens the gate. I weave through our defenses and go off-road. Nevermore have I been happier to have a jeep.
Pulling on to a small trail, I ask Hershel if he can see the prison. Shaking his head, I continue further until I reach a small open patch with a direct line of sight to the prison. We all get out and sit next to the big rock that's shielding my car.
Judith is sound asleep in Beth's arms. Dragging my head up, I stare. All we have to do now is wait. The next hour is full of jumpscares, small animals would scurry across, but I didn't have the heart to kill it, not now. What drew our attention to the action was when one of our guard towers exploded.
"Beth put Judith in the car, now!" I yelled in a whisper to not attract any more noise to our already bad situation. Hershel took his daughter and Carl behind the rock while I kept lookout.
The Governor and his people were in our yard shooting at the tower, outer walls, and taking out the walkers.
"How the hell did they find machine guns?" I question in my head.
Seeing our defenses, they stop at the very end of our driveway, blowing up another guard tower. A mix of sadness and anger rolls through me. When they cease shooting everywhere someone could hide, his "soldiers" get out and walk next to one car. Carefully maneuvering its way up, it crashes through our last fence.
"Do you think this will work?" Beth whispers to no one in particular. I sigh as we watch them disappear through our walls.
"Carl, glovebox," I tell him.
"For what?"
"You'll know when you see them," I say, trying to focus on the prison. The sound of rummaging last for only a second until I hear a slam.
"These?" He holds out my binoculars. I smile and bring them up to my eyes.
"What do you see?" They ask.
"Maggie is exiting on to the catwalk now. Glenn just opened the garage door." Both figures hold their separate positions ready for what should come.
"And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation." Hershel mumbles.
"What?" I ask him. We hopefully have a few minutes to spare.
"Rick said they would check the block. I left my Bible in there with that quote highlighted." He smirks.
