Chapter 8. It Happens In A Blink.

Start from the beginning

"I can't even keep peace at Berk... How am I supposed to keep peace everywhere at once?" Y/n asked slowly, her eyes shifting to her thumbs, which she were playing with.

Valka could sense the distress in Y/n's voice as she spoke. Her body seemed tense, but shaking. As if she was scared of something, "Y/n, is... This about something else?"

"What? No. Of course not." She shook her head, she answered fast and quickly, too quickly she knew in fact.

"Y/n, what aren't you telling me?" Valka asked, her motherly instincts turning on within her, "I know something's wrong."

"It's just... You said I was the perfect mix between Human and Dragon." Shadow nuzzled into her side as she talked, "Then... Why do I feel so... Weird among Humans?" She asked, lifting her head to look at the brown-haired woman.

"I'm not sure. Maybe because of the way you used to live? Or because you have a stronger connection to dragons?" Valka guessed along with the girl.

"Then I don't wanna be the DragonBorn." Y/n stated firmly, making Valka's eyes widen with worry and curiosity.

"Y/n, it's not something you can choose not to be." Valka replied, shaking her head. She could still see the hesitation in Y/n's eyes.

"But..." She trailed off, taking ahold of her left arm, "The thing is... I truly feel like everything I say or do is always wrong." She muttered almost too low for Valka to hear, her eyes half lidded, "Like I'm the biggest disappointment to everyone." She said, her grip tightening to the point where it hurt.

Her head shot upward, "All I ever do is letting people down." She stated harshly, her body shaking, but of what, she nor Valka knew, "And if end up carrying the goal, I'll let even more people and dragons down! I can't do that! I'm just... Me." She shouted, absurdly standing up, shocking Shadow.

"Y/n!" Valka used her staff to push herself off the ground and follow the younger girl, grinning onto her wrist, "Y/n." She stopped in her tracks, "Don't be ashamed of who you really are."

Valka pulled her wrist, not to hard but just enough to make Y/n turn around to look at her, "As long as you're happy with yourself, no one else's opinion matters."

Y/n's tongue darted out to lick her dry lips, "That's the problem." She said, shaking her head, "I'm not happy at all. I feel empty." She told the woman, who slowly loosened her grip on her wrist.

She laughed a little, putting a smile on her lips, "I feel tame." She turned to look over her shoulder, Shadow stood behind her, waiting for her, "I'd rather be flying." Silence filled the air between them.

The sound of wings beating and dragon sounds could still be heard along with the sounds of the hatchlings chirping and playing.

"Tell me. If I'm the DragonBorn, should I stay there? Do I belong there?" Y/n asked the woman, her hands clenched by her sides. Waiting for the answer she had longed to hear from someone for so long.

Valka's eyes shifted to Shadow, who looked at her with big blue eyes, "No. I'm sorry." She shook her head thoughtfully, "The DragonBorn doesn't belong at one place. You don't belong at Berk."

Finally, a small smile plastered her lips, a genuine happy one, "I didn't think so. I've been feeling out of place for a long time." She giggled, almost nervously, "But... I can't leave Hiccup."
