*time skip brought to you by late-night drives*
You sighed heavily, shutting the car engine off. Both Kehlani and Jasper had fallen asleep while you and Millie were awake. You knew this only because you heard the little girl whimpering quietly because of the dark car and not knowing where she was since she had been asleep at the time you guys left. You talked to her while you drove, calming her down to where she sat quietly in her car seat. "Millie," you whispered, unbuckling your seatbelt. The toddler hummed in response, and you smiled softly, turning in your seat. "We made it. Welcome to Empire City. Well, sort of", you giggled, opening your car door. You pulled your purse with you, shutting the door behind you and then opening the passenger door behind the driver's seat where Millie was. She looked up at you, her big (e/c) eyes blinking at you innocently. "You ready to see the city," you asked, pressing the red button over her belly to unfasten her seatbelt. She nodded, holding her arms out as you picked her up. You shut the car door, walking over to the edge of the parking garage to show her the city's bright lights over the ledge. She gasped quietly, squeezing your sweater in her hands.
"...pretty..." You chuckled, hiking her body up to adjust her on your hip.
"It is, isn't it? We'll most likely see more of it tomorrow, but first, I have to call my mom." You expertly unzipped your purse with one hand, slipping your phone out and going to your call history. You clicked on your mother's name, putting the phone to your ear as it ringed. Millie's eyes darted back and forth across the bright buildings and specks of stars in the sky, taking it all in. You smiled just as your mom answered the phone, her voice groggy from sleep.
"Mm...hello?"
"Yeah, Ma. It's me. We just made it into the parking garage and will be up in a bit."
"Oh...okay. Just — give me a second so I can get into the living room to greet you guys."
"No, I can just get the spare key from Miguel. You were sleeping, don't worry about it."
"No, no, it's fine. What kind of host would I be if I didn't greet you guys at the door?" You sighed, chuckling softly.
"Alright, Mom. I'll see you in a minute." She hummed, ending the call. You stared at your phone screen for a moment, lost in thought. You blinked, breaking yourself from the trance to look at the time. 10:50 PM. Jeez... You slipped your phone back into your purse, looking at Millie. "Okay. Now we need to wake up your mommy and Jasper. Who should we wake up first?" Millie giggled, playing with the ends of your hair for a moment.
"Jasper." You grinned, pressing your nose to hers, which made her giggle again. You put your finger to your lips, slowly walking around the car. You pulled on the handle, opening the front passenger side quietly. You placed Millie in Jasper's lap, to which the toddler stood up, holding onto Jasper's face. "Jasper," she said quietly, tapping the gem's cheeks. "Wake up." Millie then grabbed onto her gem, causing Jasper to finally open her eyes.
"Mm, wha—?" Millie giggled, and Jasper blinked, stretching before looking over the little girl in her lap. "Oh, you think it's funny to grab onto my gem," she said, grabbing Millie and tickling her. She laughed uncontrollably, falling over, her head hanging over Jasper's knees. The gem chuckled, glancing at you. "Here already?"
"Time flies when you're asleep, Captain," you replied with a chuckle, picking Millie up again. "And when did you tell this one here about your gem," you asked, tickling Millie's neck.
"It might've been Sunday. When she woke up in the middle of the night, she asked why my nose glowed and compared me to something called 'Rudolph'." You laughed, stepping back so that she could get out of the car.
"Rudolph is a reindeer. One of Santa's most special reindeer. He leads the sleigh because of the light his nose gives off." Jasper nodded slowly, looking at you with an eyebrow raised. "I'll explain it all later," you whispered, covering Millie's ears. "Now c'mon. Grab Storm while I wake up Kehlani." You opened the back door, reaching in to shake your best friend's shoulder. She yawned, waking up slowly and then looking over at you.
"We're here?"
"Yeah, now hurry up. My mom has the tendency to fall asleep again if things get too quiet for too long." Kehlani nodded, getting out of the car. "I'll open the trunk, and you guys get the bags."
"Are you going to carry a bag too," Kehlani asked with a chuckle, shutting her car door after Jasper.
"She doesn't have to, I'll carry two, and you can just roll yours and carry the last one." Kehlani groaned, grabbing her suitcase and Millie's from the trunk. Jasper then took out the duffle bag, slinging it over her shoulder, before popping the handle on yours and holding it in her hand. You closed the trunk down, locking your car. The 'beep' of the doors locking echoed through the parking garage, and you hummed quietly, making your way towards the elevator. Kehlani and Jasper followed behind you quietly, the click of your boots and the wheels of Kehlani's suitcase being the only noises surrounding your group. You pushed the 'up' button, stepping to the side to let Jasper and Kehlani inside. You then stepped in after them quickly, allowing the doors to close behind you. The ascent up was short but sweet, and you began to make your familiar trek through the attached shopping mall towards the elevators for the apartments in the building.
"Whoa...this place has its own mall", Kehlani said, looking around.
"Yeah. And there's a grocery store right under it. That way, the residents don't really have to go out to get things unless they want to."
"Efficient...I might have to move here from my place."
"Where are you staying currently anyway," you asked curiously, walking up to the elevators and pressing the button to open the doors.
"Chicago."
"Oh, for real? I've always wanted to check the place out", you mused, stepping into the elevator after your two companions. "I've heard the food is great. From my mom anyway."
"Yeah, maybe you should come by sometime. Ya know, scope the place out", Kehlani said with a shrug. You smiled, nodding your head.
"Yeah, maybe I will."
After several minutes in the elevator, you guys finally reached the thirty-ninth floor. You told Kehlani and Jasper to wait in the lobby area while you went up to the desk with Millie to get the penthouse elevator key. "Papa?"
"One moment, mija," Miguel called from the back. You leaned against the counter, waiting for him until you heard the sound of metal dropping against the desk, and you turned around, seeing an angry/surprised Miguel. You giggled, looking at him curiously.
"What?" He suddenly started whisper-shouting at you in Spanish, his words flying out of his mouth so fast that you couldn't even begin to comprehend. "Whoa, whoa...huh? I'm not fluent, Miguel, c'mon." The older man took a deep breath, closing his eyes as he pinched the bridge of his nose.
"Please tell me that isn't your baby, mija..." You laughed, rubbing Millie's back.
"No, Papa, she's not mine."
"¡Ay Dios mío! Don't scare me like that", he said, clutching his chest as he came around the desk to hug you. You giggled, kissing his cheek.
"Don't worry, I won't be having any little ones anytime soon." Miguel chuckled, reaching over the counter to grab the elevator key for you.
"Here. Go see your mother, and try not to keep her up too late." You nodded with a smile, taking the key from him.
"Jasper! Kehlani! Come on", you called, waving the key in their direction. They stood up from the seat they were sitting in at the lobby area, walking over to the elevator after it opened. You twisted the key inside the small hole on the button pad, watching as the doors closed in front of you after pressing the fortieth-floor button. When the elevator came to a halt again, you stepped out, waiting for Jasper and Kehlani before knocking on your mother's door. She opened it a second later, wearing a white silk nightgown. She pulled the sheer material of her robe closed over her chest, smiling widely.
"Oh my baby," she said, immediately going to Jasper. The gem bent down as your mother reached up to squish her cheeks, kissing Jasper's face and then her gem. Her face turned scarlet, but she gave your mother a closed-eyed smile nonetheless.
"Wow, that hurt," you said jokingly, walking into the house.
"Aww, baby, I meant no harm. Jasper just had to get kisses first", your mother said, grabbing your face next. She kissed your nose too, and you scrunched your face up as she laughed. "Now, who is this cutie," she asked, holding out her hand to Millie. The toddler held your mother's fingers, looking at her curiously. "Oh, just look at those gorgeous eyes...just as innocent as (y/n)'s when she was little", your mother cooed, rubbing Millie's hand with her thumb. Millie hid her face in your shoulder, clinging to your sweater. "And she's shy too. How adorable!" Your mother then turned towards Kehlani as she closed the front door. "And you must be the friend that (y/n) told me about so late."
"Aye, man, don't throw shade at me," you said, laughing as you put Millie on the sofa.
"I can throw as much shade as I want," your mom replied, rolling her neck at you. You rolled your eyes, a small smile on your lips. "Anyway, it's nice to meet you sweetheart, what's your name?"
"It's Kehlani, ma'am." Your mother nodded, covering her mouth as she yawned.
"Oh, excuse me! But anyway, it is very late, girls, and we have things to do in the morning", she singsonged, heading towards the back. "I'm going back to bed, but if any of you are hungry, there's food in the fridge. Oh, and show them where they'll be sleeping (y/n). I'll let you and Jasper handle that." After your mother said that, she disappeared into the darkness of her hallway. The sound of her door shutting echoed through the penthouse.
"Your mom seems...nice", Kehlani said, picking up the suitcases again. You laughed, scooping a droopy-eyed Millie up into your arms.
"Yeah, she's a little eccentric, though. And uh...there're only two beds in the spare room...," you explained, trailing off a little. "Someone can sleep on the couch if they want, but I doubt my mom would like that..."
"Don't look at me," Jasper said defensively, beginning to head towards the bedroom you and she had shared. "You better figure out the pairings before I do because I'm not sleeping on the couch." You groaned, following the gem to the back, Kehlani behind you.
"Well...I guess —"
"Nuh-uh. You took too long, so I'm picking the sleeping situation now", Jasper said, cutting you off as she pushed the room door open, revealing the dark Beach City-themed room.
"Cute," Kehlani mused from behind you, cutting the light on. "Your mom is pretty serious about interior decorating...even though I kinda expected for this room to be pink." You laughed, setting Millie down in the bed that Jasper had slept in the last time the two of you were there.
"Okay, Jasper. Go ahead and tell us where we're sleeping since you oh so rudely interrupted me."
"You, there," she said, pointing to the bed opposite the one you put Millie in. "And you, there," Jasper finished and pointed to the bed Millie was in for Kehlani.
"Ugh...I don't wanna sleep in the bed with you", you said, blushing.
"You can go and sleep on the couch then," Jasper said with a shrug, sitting on the floor to unzip the duffle bag.
"Fine...I think I will", you said, huffing. The gem shrugged again, taking out her clothes for the night. She then went into the bathroom, shutting the door behind her. You then sat on the floor, unzipping your suitcase to do the same.
"You aren't...really going to sleep on the couch, are you", Kehlani asked, sitting on the floor across from you to unzip her own suitcase, along with Millie's.
"No, I will," you answered, tossing your pajamas onto the bed. You then stood to your feet, exhaling shortly before dragging your suitcase and Jasper's duffel bag over to the closet in the room.
"Alright...", Kehlani said, an unsure tone in her voice.*time skip brought to you by wah-ter*
You sighed, turning over on the couch for what felt like the hundredth time. It was four in the morning, and you knew that you'd have to wake up in a few hours at least. Whenever your mom was planning something, she was pretty adamant about having the utmost time in the day to get the most done. You just couldn't seem to get into a comfortable position on the couch, and to add to the pain in your lower back, it was freezing cold. You had grabbed a blanket from the hallway closet after getting dressed, but it was doing you no justice. A shiver racked your body, and your teeth chattered quietly. What the hell is the A/C on?! You tossed the blanket off of you, wrapping your arms around yourself as your bare feet padded across the carpet and into the hallway. You squinted to look at the glowing numbers on the box embedded in the wall, throwing your hands up in the air in frustration. Sixty-five?! Seriously?! You sucked your teeth, tempted to change the temperature, but you knew your mom would have your ass in the morning. She was very strict when it came down to her air conditioning, even when you were little. You pouted, turning around to push the door open to the bedroom Kehlani, Jasper, and Millie were in. You closed it quietly behind you, the soft click of the latch making you jump. Kehlani turned in her sleep, pulling the cover over herself and Millie. Jasper was lying on her side, her lower half covered with the sheets. Her off-white hair hung off of the bed, but it wasn't touching the floor. You crept over to the bed, crawling in from the bottom and positioning yourself carefully behind Jasper. You sighed, snuggling under the covers, and shut your eyes. "Came crawling back, huh?" Your eyes snapped open to see a very smug-looking Jasper staring back at you, her amber eyes bright in the dark.
"Fuck you." She chuckled, opening her arms towards you. You gave her a confused expression, and she rolled her eyes.
"You're cold."
"I'm not," you said, just as another shiver racked your body. Jasper raised an eyebrow, smirking again. You let out an irritated sigh, scooting closer to her under the covers. The gem wrapped her arms around your body, pulling you closer to her. You nuzzled your face into her neck, sighing as her body heat engulfed you, making you relax.
"Better," Jasper whispered, resting her chin on the crown of your head. You nodded, humming in response as you rest your feet against her thighs. "Hey, watch it. Your feet are a temperature that cannot be handled by the heat I'm emitting." You giggled, putting your hands under her shirt and resting them on her stomach.
"They aren't that bad..."
"Shut up and go to sleep," Jasper growled, pinching your asscheek. You gasped, smacking her stomach.
"Watch those hands."
"I should be telling you the same thing, with ya hands all up under my shirt."
"Be quiet, Rudolph."
"Okay, runt."
"Sasquatch."
"Half-pint."
"Linebacker."
"Pipsqueak." You sighed, giving up and closing your eyes. Jasper chuckled again, obviously happy with herself. Eventually, Jasper drifted off to sleep, her breathing slow and her heartbeat steady. Your body soon followed, your mind powering down into a dreamless sleep.
