Chapter 16: Static Buzz

Start from the beginning

She turned her head from mine and kept up her fast pace. "Yes," was all she answered with a wavering chin.

We reared a corner and broke into a light run. What were we running from? Or towards? My mind felt like static...like an overwhelming buzz was bearing down on both of us, and I couldn't change the dial back to normal.

I bit my lip, which seemed to help my concentration, "Well...do you mind telling me why you are covered in blood splatter?" I almost shrieked. Why am I cursed with such a whiny voice?

Wonderbar spun on her heel to finally face me, her dagger eyes piecing my soft armor: "You PUT it there," she declared and then lifted up her chin in the air in defiance. She started walking again in powerful strides away from me and I struggled to keep up, our footsteps echoing in the cramped narrow hallway. We turned a final corner and there was the door: the Big Red Menace, but instead of shirking from it as I would expect a normal person to do, Wonderbar ran to embrace it. "Hurry," she cried as the buzzing got louder and louder and I sensed she heard it to. We stared at each other briefly for moment realizing we both knew neither of should be hearing the ringing in the other's head.

I heaved the door open, and it opened with a large bang. I flicked on the switch and the fluorescent lights came on. Gah!! The room was even worse under the light. Everything was ghastly yellow and vile, not to mention the jar collection of bile I had lined up at the entrance in order of hue.

Wonderbar took no heeds of the surroundings. She just faced me and said: "What the hell have you done to me?" as I slammed the door shut. I don't know why I shut it. I just felt. Safer.

"What the hell have I done to you?" I cried, emphasizing the I. "I've barely even met you!"

"What was it," she hurled an accusatory finger at me, "Did you lace the flyer with some kind of meth so when I touched it you could drug me up? What kind of twisted pervert are you?!"

I just opened my mouth to respond but nothing came out. I had no response to that at all. My brain couldn't even compute it. But there she was with a challenging glare daring me to respond.

"WELL!!??" she shrieked. I continued to stare. What could I say?

Wonderbar uttered a cry and hauled one of her heels in her hand at my head so I ducked and it hit the door with a clang. "Say SOMETHING you little TURD of a man!" she yelled with a little jump that reminded me of a pissy Chihuahua.

"What do you want me to say?? I don't understand what's going on!" I shouted back. She lifted her hand high above her head to throw the other heel at my head but I grabbed her wrist to keep her from doing it.

"Let go!" she looked up at me and seethed. She tried to slap me with the other hand, but I grabbed hold onto that arm too. I realized then how small Wonderbar was to me. At least a head shorter. And her bones were so fine I could have easily crushed them with my giant paws. I started to worry I might hurt her and thought about letting go but when she started to try to knee me in the groin, I thought better of it.

"I will let go when you promise to calm down!" I tried bartering but to no avail, she just kept growing full on wildcat in my arms: hissing, clawing, kicking, biting – yes, biting – finally she managed to get a fistful of my hair and yank my head back.

"Ahhhhhhhahhhhahhh....that hurts," I whimpered as she pulled my ear down towards her mouth which forced my body to swoop low until my knees began to touch the dusty decrepit floor.

"Let me the FUCK go," Wonderbar growled into my ear, her hot breath licking at my lobes.

And so I let her go.
