"Remus only wants me. Stay here," I tell him firmly. I remove my backpack and let it fall to the ground.
"How do you know?" Patton insists, looking over his shoulder nervously. Our fingers interlock and Patton squeezes for dear life; one of our hands is clammy, but I can't tell whose.
"Because they've done this every day since I arrived at this school," I explain calmly. "Granted, I've been here for less than a week, but it is still a valid sentiment."
"Nonsense!" Patton stands up, getting out of the car and flinging the door shut behind him. "I mean, most of it is true, but the part about my staying here is nonsense. I'm coming with you."
"Patton, it's not safe!" I gesture to his crutch. "Not with all of them! They'll hurt you. Trust me, okay?"
"I've faced him before," he pouts.
"Not like this." I gesture to the crowd of lackeys surrounding him. "Not in a fight. I can't let them hurt another innocent person on my account--especially not you. If they hurt you, I'd never be able to forgive myself."
"I love you too, Lo," Patton sighs, shaking his head silently. He takes my hand and marches right past the gaggle of guys. Most of them let us pass, but Remus snaps his fingers and two burly guys in football jerseys block our path. Patton tries to make a beeline around them, but the goons block him.
"Going somewhere in a hurry, f**gots?" He smirks, laughing as if nobody has ever used the foul word before.
I nudge Patton behind me gently, and he shrugs off his backpack, letting it fall to the ground with mine. I take a step towards Remus and in front of Patton, who grips my hand tightly in an attempt to reassure me while calming his own nerves. Neither endeavor was successful, but I squeeze back and it gives me the strength to continue. "Actually, yes," I tell him coolly. "And we'd appreciate it if you would let us get through."
"And I'd appreciate it if I could get a few hits in, homos." The wild gleam burning in his eyes looks a lot like insanity. "Shut up or I'll tear off your nipples and shove them up your nose."
"Give it up, Remus." I stride towards him so our faces are less than an inch apart. I fix him with a hard glare. "Your threats don't scare me."
"Logan, don't do this!" Patton shouts, rushing to break us apart. "You don't know what you're getting into!" But that's the thing; I do know and I don't care. Patton tries to push us apart, but Remus just smirks as he stands before us, still as a statue.
"That's okay, Sanders. They obviously scare someone." He eyes Patton. "And that's all I need." He takes a step away from me and towards Patton, who backs away, letting out a whimper of fear and flattening himself against the side of my car. I bare my teeth as Remus strides toward him.
"You wouldn't," I snarl, barreling towards Remus in an attempt to stop him from reaching Patton. Two of his lackeys hold me back, but I break through them easily. Four more surge forward and take their place, two grasping me roughly by the shoulders and the other two restraining my arms. I kick my legs and try to swing my arms, doing anything I can in a desperate attempt to get to Patton.
That protective feeling is coming back, but it's more than it was before. I know it's more because black specks dance before my eyes and I'm scared for him in a way that I'll never be scared for myself. Remus takes hold of Patton's shirt collar, yanking him forward. He squirms as he's pulled towards Remus, but it's no use fighting. As he stumbles forward, he puts too much weight on his bad ankle and yelps in pain. He puts a hand over his mouth, realizing what's about to happen at the same time I do. Remus smirks, eyeing Patton's crutch.
