Chapter 25: First Words

Start from the beginning

After you had fed Storm and changed the litter in her litter box, you went upstairs to shower and change clothes. You slid a pair of compression shorts up your legs, completing the look with a sports bra and your favorite sneakers. You brushed your (h/c) hair and then tied it away from your face. When you were done with that, you went back downstairs, grabbing your keys from by the door, and then giving Storm one last glance. She was getting settled by the screen door, laying in the sunlight shining through it. You smiled softly, opening the front door. Making sure to lock it, you jogged down the steps and then down the beach towards Funland Arcade. The establishment wasn't open to the public today, but Mr. Smiley had given you an extra set of keys since you worked there whenever you could. You were planning to do some solo training since the ex-comedian hardly trained you over the summer because of the rush. You hummed to yourself as you unlocked the padlock on the metal sliding door. The sound of metal scraping filled the mostly quiet boardwalk since it was still early in the day. You walked inside the dark arcade, sliding the metal door down again before making your way to the back. The open double door was the first thing to catch your attention, confusing you. Next, the sound of a punching bag being hit caught your ear. You slowly entered the training area behind the arcade, peeking in. You let out a breath you didn't know you had been holding, smiling widely as you walked farther in. "Hey, Mr. Smiley," you greeted. The older man ceased his training, turning to give you his signature smile.

"Hey, (y/n)," he said, pulling his gloves off to wipe his brow.

"Didn't expect to see you here," you said with a giggle, replacing the boxing gloves on the hook in the wall with your keys. You noticed an extra pair of gloves on the wall too, an even larger size than you had seen before.

"Don't mind me, girly," he said, chuckling, hanging his gloves back up. "I just got a little burst of energy so I decided to blow some of it off while I was already here," he explained.

"What'd you come in for anyway? Arcade is closed...you training someone else", you asked jokingly, pointing at the pair of gloves on the wall before you put your second one on. Mr. Smiley chuckled, grabbing a water bottle from one of the chairs in the big room.

"She hardly needs training. She's a natural. Might even be as good as me," the arcade owner finished with a hearty laugh.

"Who," you asked, curiously as you began punching the sack of sand in front of you. Before Mr. Smiley could answer you, the sound of the doors leading back to the showers echoed through the room as they slammed closed. "Jasper," you said quietly, watching as she walked towards you to fetch the gloves from the hook on the wall near you.

"The two of you know each other," Mr. Smiley asked, looking between you and the gem.

"Y-Yeah...she's my—roommate", you said slowly, blushing slightly at the gem's outfit. She was wearing a pair of dark blue shorts with a white waistband and a lighter blue accent along her side. The sports bra matched, a yellow diamond sitting in the middle of it. Her long white hair was tied back in a high ponytail, still falling past her waist. You gulped slightly as Jasper's sharp amber eyes bore into your (e/c) ones. You weren't the first to break eye contact this time as you expected; she was. You couldn't help but smirk softly at your mini victory, watching as she entered the ring in the middle of the room.

"Roommate. Right...," Mr. Smiley said suspiciously, chuckling afterward. "You girls play nice. Lock up when you're done", he said, waving his hand as he left the room.

After many minutes of silence between you and Jasper, you finally decided to speak up. You had been jabbing and kicking the punching bag to fill the void of awkward silence, but it wasn't really working. You held onto the sandbag to stop it from moving, your breathing labored. "So when did you and my trainer get acquainted," you asked, your back still to the gem.
