“Yeah?” I said taking off my earphones.
“Just here to tell you that we’ve got new neighbors.” She said sliding her hand over the black piano.
“So?” Was that really of any importance to me? “Are you saying that the old man who lived next door died in his asylum and now a new family has moved in?”
My mom pursed her pink lips at my answer. She eyed me with her light-brown eyes which I inherited from her. “Yes. That and that there’s a girl maybe around your age who you might think of getting along with.”
I rolled my eyes at that.
Pfft. Right.
Getting along.
“Alex. You’ll probably see her almost every day so don’t let this chance slip from you.” My mom warned me.
“Is that it? May I go back to my music, mom?” I said trying to cut her off.
She sighed and took some steps towards the door but she turned around and said, “I’ll be going later to greet them. I’ll want you to come with me.”
Before I could protest she closed the door and walked down the house corridor. Even if I had been able to, she wouldn’t have heard me through the soundproof walls.
Stupid.
Why would she be interested in knowing the neighbors? More importantly, why would she want me to meet the new girl? Was it even necessary?
I sighed. It was probably better to meet her now, establish the rules and ignore her for the rest of my life…. Yeah, that sounded like a great plan. Talking about sound, I remembered what I was doing before my mom came in with her useless blabber. I turned on the recording and realized that I really hadn’t been able to record the last bar.
Editing the audio was going to be a hassle…
Better to record the whole piano part again.

I threw the dirty clothes into the basket next to my desk, grabbed a green checkered shirt, a top and dark shorts and put them on slowly since I wasn’t really in a rush. In the end, my mom had a conversation with a man next door who changed our plans to visit into a dinner with them. When she told me that, I was incredibly annoyed by the fact that she didn’t refuse at all. Now, I was being forced to go against my will.
Outside there were many lights on in the other house that made me wonder how many people lived in there. About four, maybe? Well, I didn’t give it much though after all because I got distracted by the sound of my mom knocking at my door.
“Coming,” I said.
“Be in your best behavior, Alex. Try to socialize a little.” She asked of me once we met down at our front door.
“Mhmm.” I responded back. “Hey, what about dad?”
“Don’t you remember he’s in Switzerland?”
Oh yeah. “Oh, yeah.”
My mom rolled her eyes at me in annoyance. The roll of the eyes I guess ran in my blood.
I closed the door behind me as my mom went ahead over the cement path, turned and walked up the neighbors’ driveway. I simply walked across our lawn and theirs which got me to their front door a lot faster than my mom. She gave me a glare before ringing the doorbell but I seriously didn’t care. I pushed up my glasses, and tied my auburn hair to the side as we heard someone walking inside the house towards the door. Once the person got there, there was a momentary pause and then it was opened. I wasn’t really interested in who it was but I raised my head after a few seconds and was surprised by what I saw.
