I bit my lip to keep from crying out and gripped the edge of the table. Right now I felt like throwing up and the air in the room was growing hotter by the second. I felt a tap on my shoulder and turned to see Benjamin staring at me.
"Are you okay?" he asked me.
I nodded. The stomach cramp only got worse so I gripped the table harder. All of a sudden Mr. Tanner stopped talking. I was beginning to feel very faint.
"Miss Lennox, are you okay?" I heard my teacher ask me.
I nodded but he didn't seem to believe me. I wouldn't either. There was a possibility that I looked almost as bad as I felt. Mr. Tanner laid a hand on my forehead.
"You're burning up," he told me.
"I'm fine," I tried to assure him. I could feel the nausea getting worse.
"Did you eat lunch, Azalea?" Mr. Tanner asked me. I nodded. "Benjamin, I need you to take her to the nurse, please. I think she may have food poisoning," he instructed.
Benjamin tried to lift me to my feet, but I stayed put. "No, I can't miss anymore school." Mr. Tanner pulled me up by my arm.
"It's okay, Lea. I assure you that your well-being is far more important than school. You need to go home," he told me.
I tried to take a step forward but I was too weak. I began falling but before I could hit the floor, Benjamin caught me.
"You're going to have to carry her," Mr. Tanner told him.
I felt myself being lifted and then I was moving. The cramps were getting worse and worse. I was probably crying but I was too concentrated on not vomiting to figure it out. I heard a door chime open and I could sense several bodies around me.
"What's wrong with her?" I heard our administrative assistant Mrs. Jefferson ask.
"Mister Tanner thinks she has food poisoning. He told me to bring her down here," Benjamin told her.
"Okay. I'm going to go call her parents. The nurse isn't here today, but go lay her down in the office. You can stay in there with her if you'd like until her mom or dad arrive," she said.
Benjamin walked into the nurse's office and sat me down on the cot. With the strength I had left, I grabbed the trash bin beside the nurse's desk and vomited into it, surprised when I saw that I had vomited up my hamburger which was mixed with a little blood. I was now aware that I was crying. I felt a comforting hand rubbing my back and turned to see Benjamin.
"I know that we haven't ever talked before except in class, but thank you."
He smiled. "You're welcome."
Mrs. Jefferson walked into the room and looked at me. "Your father will be here in a little bit, Azalea. Sit tight sweetie," she told me and walked back out.
I sighed. The one day I actually decide to eat cafeteria food it nearly kills me. I hated the way I felt. To me, food poisoning was just throwing up the food you ate and then you'd be better. I didn't expect to acquire a fever, bloody vomit, and I most definitely didn't expect my insides to devour themselves. This was the worst stomach pain I'd ever had in my life.
The cramps were still getting worse, and the tears were running down my face in a steady stream. I clutched my abdomen tightly and rolled over, hoping the pain would go away only it didn't. Quickly, I sat up and vomited into the trash bin again. This time there was no blood and I was quite thankful for that.
After what felt like hours later, a pair of footsteps could be heard walking into the room. I rolled over, still holding my abdomen in a death grip. My dad looked at Benjamin and then to me, his eyes dropping ever so slightly. He walked over and knelt down beside me, wiping a tear off of my face when he did.
"Ron's coming in to get you. I have to go and sign you out, okay?" he told me.
I nodded slowly. I was beginning to become dizzy. He gave me a small smile and patted my head before hastily walking out of the room. Seconds later Ron walked into the room, his eyes landing on Benjamin before landing on me. Right now I paid no mind to him. He began walking over to me, but stopped when I sat up and vomited into the trash bin, this time nothing but blood. I looked wide eyed at the bin and laid my head back down, turning away from the Ron and Benjamin.
Everything was getting worse. My cramps, my nausea, my fever. .everything. I was so dizzy and so weak. I hated it so much.
"Azalea, sweetspark," I heard Ron say.
What had he just called me?
I turned around to face him. He had a smile on his face yet his eyes were filled with worry.
"Huh?" I mumbled.
He knelt down beside me. "We're going to take you home, okay?" I nodded and he turned to Benjamin. "Can she walk?"
I didn't understand why he didn't just ask me.
"Well, I had to carry her down here and she looks a lot worse than she did so my guess would be probably not," Benjamin told him.
Ron nodded and stood up. He slipped an arm underneath my legs and then another underneath my back. Suddenly I was being lifted. Ron started walking out of the nurse's office but I stopped him and turned to face Benjamin.
"Thank you, again," I said.
He just smiled and nodded. Ron resumed walking. After a few moments I felt a breeze and knew we were outside. A door opened and Ron gently placed me into the backseat of the truck. I laid there and stared at the floor. I really wanted to throw up but I didn't think doing that in here would put me on good terms with Ironhide.
The truck began moving which caused my nausea to become even worse. I bit my lip to keep it shut and just closed my eyes. It seemed to me that I officially had the worst luck in the world.
