"Jasper!" You gripped your chest trying to calm your uneven breathing. Was that...just a dream? Your (e/c) eyes flicked over your surroundings frantically, taking everything in. It was obvious that you were in a hospital room. It was unnervingly clean, and you shuddered, gripping your biceps in an attempt to chase away the chills that racked your form. There was a large window to your left, sunlight spilling out onto the floor from it. You glanced towards your right, seeing a small bedside table with a vase of flowers on it. You reached over, pulling the small note attached to the plant. 'Get well soon'. As you were about to pull your hand back, you flinched, noticing that you had an IV in your arm. Your (e/c) eyes followed the tube, your ears just now noticing the quiet dripping of the bag above you. Why am I here? What happened, you thought, running your fingers against your chapped lips. Your throat felt dry and you craved water so you decided to get out of the bed. You pushed the rough blanket that was over your legs off, swinging them over the edge of the mattress. When you leaned forward to stand, pain shot through your abdomen causing you to scream. Tears stung the corner of your eyes, but you still managed to stand on your own. You jumped at the sound of the door across the room slamming open, revealing Amethyst. Your (e/c) eyes met with her indigo ones before she jogged towards you, pushing you gently back onto the bed.
"Whoa, take it easy!" Your legs shook slightly as you sat back down, your stomach still throbbing. The skin felt tight as if it were being pulled. "You shouldn't move around too much, (n/n)."
"I — I want some water", you said softly, clenching the gem's forearms in your hands. Her eyes softened and she rubbed your back for a moment before leaving out of the room. While she was gone, you pulled the end of your hospital gown up to find the source of your discomfort. Your eyes widened slightly at the sight of bandages wrapped around your form, stopping just under your chest and above your hips. The gauze was mostly white, but you couldn't miss the stark red color of blood that contaminated it.
"Alright, (y/n). I brought your water. Doc should be in here after a...while..." Amethyst's voice trailed off as she stared back at you, Steven and Peridot in tow. You dropped the end of your gown, covering yourself again as you took the styrofoam cup from the quartz's fingers.
"...thank you", you mumbled, drinking the cold liquid. The trio stood awkwardly in front of you, seemingly wracking their brains for something to say. Before you could speak to try and ease the tension in the room, the door opened again. A young man, maybe around the same age as you, walked into the room with a clipboard in hand. He had wavy blonde hair that was scattered across his forehead, hiding his eyebrows and part of his deep blue eyes. He looked up, smiling warmly as he stopped in front of you.
"Well, good morning, sleepyhead", he said jokingly, flipping through the papers on his clipboard. "I'm Doctor Connor. I've been watching over you for the past couple of days that you've been here."
"D-Days", you asked, looking up at him. He nodded once, pulling the stethoscope from around his neck. Dr. Connor placed the two buds into his ears, pressing the cold metal end to your chest. The room was silent for a moment as he checked your vitals until he began speaking again.
"You've been here for a total of four days. It's...Saturday. October third, if you wanted to know." I've been out for four days?!
"Wait — wh-what happened?!"
"Hey, hey...no need to get worked up now", he said with a chuckle, patting your back. "Your friends brought you in", he explained, gesturing to Amethyst, Steven, and Peridot. "According to what they told me...it's truly a miracle you even survived. You were impaled by a large piece of metal. It went straight through you, meaning it should have shattered the bone of your spine and pierced some pretty important organs in the abdominal area." As the man spoke, everything began coming back to you. The four of you going to the Beta Kindergarten and stumbling upon Jasper and her army. Amethyst and Steven fusing to make Smoky. Jasper fusing with the corrupted Ocean Jasper. Resulting in her getting...
"No...th-that can't be right", you whispered, clenching the covers beneath you.
"I-I'm sorry, (y/n)", Steven's small voice said from in front of you. Tears welled up in his dark brown eyes as he gripped his red t-shirt in hand. He hiccuped quietly before sniffing, his bottom lip quivering. "I was so w-worried! Wh-When I healed you and-and you didn't wake up I —" You cut him off by placing your hand atop the mess of curly hair on his head.
"I'm okay, Steven", you said, giving him a small smile.
"I c-couldn't even heal you all the way! I — I thought...", he said quietly, trailing off as he looked down at his feet. You placed your hands on either side of his face, wiping away his tears.
"It's okay, Steven...I'm okay. And that's all that matters." The teenage boy nodded quietly, holding your hands in place on his cheeks as he continued to sniff.
"Well, whatever Steven here did to 'heal' you, it worked. The only thing wrong when you came in was the deep cut that ran along your abdomen, here", Dr. Connor said, gently brushing his fingers across your stomach. "We had to stitch that up, of course, but I'm sorry to say that it will leave a scar. Other than that, you're free to go when you please. I'll give you a moment to catch up with your friends before I send a nurse in to change your bandages again before you leave."
"Wait — what about my legs", you asked, remembering how you couldn't move them when — You pressed your lips together to push the thought away, not wanting to believe it. You weren't going to believe it because it wasn't true. Jasper's just...out somewhere. Doing her thing. I will see her soon. "They weren't broken?"
"No. Do they hurt", he asked, feeling along your legs.
"No, it's just...I remember not being able to feel them before."
"Well, if I remembered correctly, you jumped from a ledge or...some high place. The adrenaline you were experiencing in such a stressful situation most likely made your legs go numb so you wouldn't feel the force of the fall", he explained, giving you a soft smile. "Any more questions?" You shook your head, your lips twitching up into a short smile.
"No, sir. Thank you, doctor", you said quietly. He returned the gesture, the tan skin around his eyes creasing as he did so. Dr. Connor then left the room, leaving you, Amethyst, Steven, and Peridot alone. The room remained completely silent for a moment before Peridot began yelling.
"I'm so sorry, (y/n)! I didn't think that you would jump in front of Jasper! If I would have known, I would have never —"
"Don't worry about it, Peridot. I'm not upset", you said with a light chuckle, not wanting to talk about the quartz soldier at the moment. You were still processing from the shock of what was going on. The gem whimpered, sniffing.
"Are you sure?" You nodded, turning to look at Steven who was still standing in front of you.
"Any idea where my phone is, Stevie?"
"Uh..."
"It would be inside of your other clothes", a woman's voice answered. You looked up in the doorway to see a nurse. She was pushing a small table into the room with supplies on it. The nurse was an older woman, her dark brown skin lined with a few wrinkles and freckles.
"Where are my other clothes", you asked politely, pressing your feet to the floor.
"In that wardrobe over there", she said, gesturing towards the door before stopping in front of you. Steven moved out of the way, standing to the side to give her some room. "You can get them once I patch you up. Would you like your friends to leave out? I'll let them know when they can come back in." You blushed softly before nodding. The only thing you were wearing under the hospital gown was a pair of underwear. The nurse chuckled, looking over at the gems. Steven and Peridot nodded once, holding onto each other as they left the room. Amethyst gradually dragged herself out of the room, a blush spread across her cheeks. "So, I hear you got yourself into some trouble", the nurse started as she carefully took the IV from your arm. You didn't even wince at the sharp needle, your body and mind feeling mostly numb. You could tell that she was just trying to make friendly conversation as she pulled the gown gently off of you, but you didn't particularly feel like talking at the moment. Especially to a woman you didn't know who was removing your only form of coverage.
Your mind was clouded with thoughts. How Steven had healed you after being impaled by that piece of metal. How Jasper was now corrupted and in an unknown place. How there was a possibility that you'd never see her again. You were mentally battling your rational mind, still not wanting to believe the outcome that you knew for a fact had happened. Jasper... "Alright, baby. I'm done." You jumped slightly, blushing before you looked down at your newly dressed wounds. You ran your fingers over the gauze snuggly wrapped around your torso, being careful not to move too much and disrupt it. The older woman straightened her posture again, going over to the wardrobe on the far end of the room. She opened one of the doors, pulling out a hanger with the clothes you were wearing four days ago on it. "Don't worry, they're clean", she reassured with a chuckle. You smiled lightly, looking down at your hands that were resting in your lap. She slipped the sweater over your head, helping you put your arms through the correct holes.
E-Excuse me? What's your name", you asked shyly, putting your legs into your jeans.
"Gladys", the nurse replied, pulling the fabric up your legs until your feet popped out of the ends. "Now let's get you up." She helped you stand, placing your hands on her shoulders so that she could pull your jeans up.
"Thank you..."
"It's no problem, sweetheart", the older woman said sweetly as she went back over to the wardrobe. She put the hanger back where it belonged, bending down to take something else out. She then walked back over to you and put your socks and shoes on your feet, tying the laces. It was more than embarrassing for you to be a grown woman and have to have someone else put your clothes on for you. You felt helpless, but you didn't have a choice. "Okay, here", Gladys said after she stood up again, handing you a tube. "Doctor Connor told me to give this to you. You're supposed to put this onto that cut of yours so that it doesn't get infected. It also numbs the pain a little bit." She then handed you a roll of gauze next. "Use this after you use the gel in that tube. It should stick to itself, so you won't have to worry about any tape." You nodded, holding the two items in your hands as Gladys grabbed ahold of the small table again, preparing to leave the room.
"How often do I put this gel on?"
"Twice a day. In the morning and then at night before you go to bed", she replied with a smile.
"Alright. Thank you again."
"Sit tight. I'll go and get your friends so that you can leave. Take care of yourself, baby", Gladys said before she left the room. You smiled softly to yourself, looking down at the floor.
Several minutes later Steven and the others came back into the room. Amethyst was pushing a wheelchair and you groaned, rolling your eyes. The teenage boy ran to your side, wrapping your arm around his shoulders. "Is this necessary", you asked with a chuckle.
"Yes! As long as I'm around, I'm going to take care of you. So get used to it." You laughed lightly at Steven's serious tone, standing up slowly. You let him walk you over to the wheelchair, sitting in it.
"I feel like royalty."
"Right this way, milady", Amethyst said, forcing a British accent. The four of you shared a laugh as the quartz rolled you out of the room. "Greg's waiting outside for us."
"Are you ready to go home, (y/n)", Steven asked innocently, walking beside you.
"Yeah", you said softly.
