Chapter 98: Kenny Ackerman

Start from the beginning

"Because.... you probably hate me for--"

The Ackerman cut me off abruptly, narrowing his eyes to mere slits. "Why would I kill the person who I asked to take care of you?"

I looked at Kenny in shock. "W-what?"

"I was the reason Lili even opened an orphanage. And I made sure you were going to be placed there. No other better place to be than under the care of your mother's closest friend."

"But then.. how come you acted like you didn't know who Ms. Falida was? At her funeral..." I protested, remembering that dark day when I said goodbye to her forever. And the day I first met this man.

Kenny crossed his arms. "I didn't want to raise suspicion."

More questions began popping up in my head the more I thought about that day. "Why were you even there? And why were you with Jeff? What did you do to him??"

"The kid's alive," Kenny answered after a groan and a roll of his eyes. "And I came there for the same reason as you. I got news she died. Murdered, actually."

"....and if it wasn't you, then who was it..?" I asked myself, realizing that her killer could still be on the loose, roaming the streets.

"Lili had money, and there's been people eyeing it for a while. But I already took care of that problem when I went there," he ended with a sinister smile.

I slowly glanced up. "And by took care, you mean...?"

Kenny smiled, his eyes wide as he ran a finger across his neck, gesturing the answer to my question.

I held back a gasp and simply stared, unsure whether to feel bad or good that Ms. Falida's death has been avenged. The more I think about it, the more I realize the fact that I would've probably done the same if I met her killer.

Actually... I did do the same.

I killed the person who I falsely thought was her killer.

I shook the thought away, bringing all the questions I wanted answers to back in my mind.

"And Erwin?" I continued after I quickly composured myself.

"What about him?"

"Did you kill him too?"

"What?" Kenny snarled. "I already told you, Levi was the one who killed him."

"He wasn't... controlled by you?"

"No," Kenny snapped impatiently. "He was controlled by Nightmare. When I found him, he already killed the guy. I bet you ever since that day he's been wallowing up in his own guilt."

"But how come when I reached you, Levi was controlled by you? And... you were controlled by Nightmare?"

The Ackerman stood tilted, leaning most of his weight only on one leg. "I got Nightmare out of Levi the same way I got it out of you."

"How?"

"Nightmare is more likely to attack an Ackerman. An Ackerman Lord, even more so. If I focus my thoughts on negative things hard enough, it's forced to leave whoever it's trying to control and go to me."

"But then," I paused, swallowing hard. "Nightmare would attack you."

Kenny huffed, looking away. "I've always managed to fight it off. But I didn't think I'd reach my limit that day."

"Then... you never wanted what happened on that cliff either..."

"I didn't," Kenny confirmed, turning to briefly glance at the Moon Goddess. "But there's no use in regretting it. It's just a shitty, cruel fate that no one can escape from."
