"But hope breeds eternal misery." Spencer tried to shake that thought out of her head, although that was easier said than done, she realized that she should probably open her eyes and do what she came here to do, get some answers from Toby, whether she was really ready to hear them or not.
"We really need to talk Tobes." She said as she looked up at him, he was a little shocked that she still used his nickname, maybe she would listen to him. "Yeah, we do." He said before leading her over to the couch and she sat down next to him, he carefully reached for her hand, but she pulled it away. "I want an explanation first." She said, but her voice was soft and calm, not angry, which was a good sign, right?
"I know, I know. You deserve some answers and I would love to give them to you, but I'm just not sure where to start." He said. "Maybe you should start from the beginning." Spencer said and Toby nodded. "I can do that." He said and Spencer nodded and waited for him to start explaining.
"Okay, so it started when I got that job in Bucks County, Mona somehow tracked me down and offered me a spot on the team, of course my first gut instinct was to tell her absolutely not, but then I thought about that fight we'd had before I left, how I told you that if you wouldn't tell me anything about what was going on that I was going to find out for myself, and so I came to the conclusion that if I agreed to "help" Mona, then I would be able to get you some answers, and keep you safe in the process. So I said yes, but only for the sole purpose of protecting you." Toby told her, she just stared at him for a second. "S-so, you were just trying to protect me?" She said and he nodded.
"Yes of course, I need you to know that anytime that Mona asked me to do something terrible to you, I obviously refused, made up excuses that she ended up buying, not that she was very happy about it but I wasn't going to do anything to help her cause you anymore pain. I would never do that." Toby said and Spencer nodded, she could tell that he was being sincere, and of course deep down she knew that he would never hurt her like that, but she still had a lot of questions that needed answers.
"So considering that you snuck into my house to get that key, that…. Y-you were the one that pulled that stunt with Hanna?" She asked him, not really wanting to hear the truth, but she knew that she needed to hear it, Toby nodded sorrowfully. "Yeah that was me, but I made sure not to seriously hurt her, I never did anything to hurt the other girls either. You do believe me, don't you?" He asked her, she wasn't really sure how to respond. "Honestly… I'm not really sure what to say right now, I mean obviously I want to believe that you'd never do anything to hurt me or the girls, especially me and Em, but… this is all just a lot to process right now…" She said before looking down at the floor and Toby sighed softly and put his head in his hands, he just wanted all of this to go away, for Spencer to trust him again, for things to go back to the way that they were between them, except for all of the secrets surrounding -A obviously. "Tobes." Spencer whispered to him and he looked up at her, tears in his eyes.
"I understand that this is a lot to deal with, but can we please just keep talking through this? I promise I will answer any other questions that you have. I just want to make this right." Toby said, his eyes pleading her to stay, but she wasn't so sure that it was a good idea right now. "I, uh… I think I need some time to process all of this." Spencer said before standing up from the couch, she started to walk towards the door and he stood up, he needed her to stay. "Please don't leave." Toby begged and Spencer stopped in her tracks and turned around to face him again.
"I know that you're upset, and I don't blame you, but please, don't leave. Please just stay with me and let us get through this. Please." Toby pleaded with her, he started to tear up again and Spencer couldn't help but walk back over to him and wipe his tears away. "Toby…"
She said sympathetically, she didn't like seeing him like this, everything just seemed like a mess right now, Toby grabbed her hands gently and looked deep into her eyes. "I did a stupid thing, I realize that, but I was only trying to keep you safe, Spence you're the most important person in the world to me, and I can't lose you like I lost my mom, which is why I made the decision to pretend to help Mona, I wanted to keep you safe, I need you to believe me." He said and Spencer squeezed his hands gently. "I do believe you." She said and he just kinda stared at her for a second. "Y-you do?" He asked her and she nodded.
"Of course I do, I know you Tobes, and deep down I knew that there had to be more to the story, which is why I came here, I needed to see you and get the full story." She said. "You don't know how happy I am to hear you say that." Toby said as he smiled softly at her and she couldn't help but smile back at him. "I think I have an idea." She said. "So… are we okay?" Toby asked her hesitantly, he was almost afraid of the answer, but he seemed to have gotten through to her, right? "I mean obviously I think we still have some things to talk about, but yeah, yeah, we're going to be okay." Spencer said as she smiled softly at him and he breathed a sigh of relief as he smiled back at her, he gently pulled her in for a hug and Spencer breathed a sigh of relief as she hugged him back and laid her head on his chest. "I love you so much." She whispered to him as he kissed the top of her head. "I wanted to say that first." He whispered to her and she smiled up at him before kissing him softly and he kissed her back, relieved that she had listened to him and believed him, he was so scared of losing her, when they broke apart for air he stroked her hair gently. "So…" He trailed off as he continued stroking her hair and she smiled at him. "Yeah?" She said curiously. "I was thinking, this was not how this night was supposed to go…" Toby said and Spencer stroked his cheek gently. "No it definitely wasn't…" She said. "I just want to apologize for everything, I mean I totally ruined your plan to surprise me…" Toby said before looking down in shame, Spencer tried to comfort him by running her hand through his hair gently.
"Tobes, don't be so hard on yourself. I blame Mona for putting you into this position in the first place, I'm sure she told you to sneak into my house to get the key back." She said and Toby nodded as he looked back up at her. "Yeah, I told her that I didn't want to do it, but then she threatened to hurt you so I didn't really have much of a choice but to agree with it, and of course I didn't know that you would be there since you told me that you were going to be at a dinner with your parents all night." He said. "Yeah, I wanted to surprise you for our Anniversary, which of course did not end up like I'd planned… but I don't blame you, and I know that you were just trying to keep me safe, and I want you to know that I love you for that." Spencer said and Toby smiled at her. "Thanks, okay, so what I wanted to say is this, what do you say we reheat the lasagna in the oven, and then after we eat we can play Scrabble on my new board, thank you for that by the way." He said and Spencer smiled softly at him before nodding. "You're welcome, and that sounds perfect." She said. "Good." Toby said. "But, wait a second. What about Mona? Surely she knows what happened at my house…" Spencer said before trailing off, Toby started to massage her shoulders trying to calm her down. "Hey, don't do that. I'm pretty sure that she doesn't even know what happened, at least not yet, because if she did then she'd be over here yelling at me for getting caught, but I don't want to think about that right now, okay? We can deal with her later, together. And I want you to promise me something." He said and Spencer looked at him curiously. "Hmm?" She said.
"I want you to promise me that if things get worse with -A that you will tell me the truth instead of trying to protect me, we have to be in this together to protect each other, deal?" Toby said and Spencer nodded. "Yeah, deal." She said smiling softly at him. "Good, okay let's go celebrate the way we should've been doing tonight." Toby said and Spencer nodded in agreement and they walked over to the kitchen, hand in hand, and Toby put the lasagna back in the oven to reheat it a little, and then he took it out after a bit and they both sat down to eat, and he smiled softly at Spencer. "What?" She asked him. "Nothing, I'm just admiring my beautiful girlfriend, and I'm really glad that you decided to stay." Toby said and Spencer smiled widely at him. "Well thank you, and of course I stayed, I could tell that you were telling me the truth. I love you Tobes." She said smiling softly at him. "I love you too Spence. Happy Anniversary." Toby said smiling at her. "Happy Anniversary Tobes." Spencer said happily as she smiled back at him, then he leaned over the table to kiss her softly and she smiled into the kiss and kissed him back, they were going to be just fine, if they could get through this, then they could get through anything else that -A or Mona tries to throw at them.
