A New beginning

chapter 26

" Am afraid you can't. You'll have to wait til tomorrow, Excuse me, " he says and then leaves.

" Hey, "Nick says hugging me. " She's going to make it, Didn't you hear the doctor say that she's a fighter."I just nod my head, silent tears falling from my eyes.

"I can't loose her Nick?"," I say more tears welling in my eyes." She's the only one I've got left."

" You have me too vee. You know you can always count on me, " Nick says kissing my forehead. "Let's get going ,you need to get some sleep . "

" Am not leaving my sister alone, " I say realising my self from his hold.

" You can't wait here all night! That's Mike.

" I can and I will. " I stand my ground.

" Okay then, I'll also stay," Nick says taking a seat.

" Me too, " Mike says joining him.

" She's my sister and so am the only one staying . I know you two are just trying to help but I'll be fine," I say giving them a sad but reassuring smile. "Please just go home ."

" Okay, but don't hesitate to call me, any time, if you need me, " Nick says as they both give me a hug, and later on leave.

Am now all alone with my thoughts trying to make sense of what just happened. I tried my best to show Nick and Mike that am good but deep down am crashing.

Everything that's happening has just taken me back to all the lonely nights I spent crying myself to sleep. All the times I felt neglected, worthless, abandoned and alone. All the uncertainty in my life, all the abuse that I'd suffered, all the challenges I'd ever faced, all the hurt, the disappointments, everything came back to me.

The only reason i was able to take all that was because of Maya and there's no way I'll survive without her. She is the only reason i wake up every morning, just to make her dreams come true and make sure she has everything that I didn't.

My uncle better prays that she survives or else I'll hunt him down !

" Vee," Rita calls out, bringing me back to reality. She hugs me crying her hear out and I can't help but cry along with her.

" Am so sorry that I wasn't there to protect you girls, " I say wiping my tears as i break the hug.

" It's not your fault."

" Where have you been and what happened ? "I ask wanting to confirm my suspicions.

" I was at the police station. They were taking my statement since its a police case," She says taking my hand. "Let's go over t to the reception and finish some papers work first, They need your signature. "

" Okay ," I say following her.

As am reading through and signing the paper, Rita excuses herself to go get us some coffee. Am surprised to see that everything,including the surgery, which was so damn expensive! has already been paid for. I hadn't even thought of how I was going to pay all this.

" Who paid for this? " I ask the receptionist.

" The owner of the hospital. He asked that your sister be taken care of at any cost and for you not pay a dine," she says and that leaves me more confused.

" What? !But why would he do that? "

" I really don't know, " she says with a shrug , going back to her work.

I don't understand what's happening here, why would a stranger help us out like this?!

Rita is back after some minutes with the coffee and she looks kind of uneasy and restless . I guess, she might be traumatized by everything that happened.

" Why did you bring Maya to this hospital and not saint Teresa, which is closer to our house? " I ask trying to get to the bottom of this.

"Well ," she says nervously. " It's because I personally know the owner.

" What?! How?

" He's my father," she says and now am beyond confused.

I think something is wrong with my ears!

" He's your father?! Did I hear right!

" Yes, it's true. That's the reason I asked for Maya to be brought here.

" But I thought you were an orphan?!

" Am sorry vee, I lied to you. I was just so desperate and needed somewhere to stay for a while," she explains while am still trying to process everything.

She lied to me?
