Chapter 7 - The Proposal

Start from the beginning

"Guards! If anyone asks for permission to enter, let them know that I am sleeping."

Recognizing the voice to be of the very king he wants to meet, Babhru glances into the garden to see a swing swaying lightly. Missing it at first glance, he could figure out the shape of a familiar peacock feather sticking out from amidst the flora adoring the swing. The back of the swing, the side visible to Babhru, however, betrays the onlooker giving an impression of the swing being empty. An impression that the king of Manipur bought initially.

Pondering over his next steps, he finally decides on not letting go of the rare opportunities to talk to his uncle. His apprehension increases with each step, as an unknown fear grips his heart taunting him for disturbing the older king's sleep. If only he could see the said person and the twinkling mischievous smile on his face. Stopping a couple of steps away from the swing, he opens his mouth to say something when the corner of his eyes catch the morpankh raising from the flowers and his gaze zeroes on the beautiful face that leaves everyone awestruck for few moments.

"You? You are not a guard. Where did the guard go? Anyway, who are you and why did you enter stealthily?" Caught off guard, the king of Manipur fumbles with his words trying to explain why he was there but stops seeing his uncle raise a bow at him.

"Dwarakadheesh! You must have mistaken me. I -" he stops short when the older king releases the arrow and prepares himself to catch it. Instead, the arrow catches him off guard by bursting into a bunch of feathers and landing on him.

Laughing at the spluttering boy, Krishna wonders, "Did you really think I would not recognize Parth's son? Did you think I would shoot an arrow at just anyone who enters the garden? Hmm.. It seems you consider me to be very cruel. Now, what must have given that impression."

"No, That is not what I meant. Please do not be offended." Hiding his smile, Krishna settles on the swing, beckoning the boy and asks, "So, King Babhruvahana. What brings you here?" "Uncle Yudhishtir sent me here." replies Babhruvahana. "Oh! Why so? Anything serious?" wonders Krishna pretending to be deep in thought.

"Uncle Krishna! You're back." exclaims Suthanu startling him. She rushes in taking the blessings of Krishna and hugs him. "Suthanu, my lovely princess. How are you dear?" asks Krishna equally excited. "I am fine and happy. How are you and how is everyone in Dwaraka? What did you bring me from Dwaraka?" she asks settling herself beside Krishna.

Standing rooted at his place, Babhruvahana wonders just how close the two are. He remembers Suthanu and Vrishaketu feeding him stories of how swiftly Krishna killed his cousin, the king of Chedi Shishupal and also his uncle Kamsa. Their accents and expressions aided with the story settled an unknown fright in the boy's heart. The scene before him, however, talks of a completely different story. Blush creeps up his neck, as he realizes that his cousins tricked him.

"Everyone are fine and they miss you a lot. Alas! I do not have any gift for you. I do have a plan though" says Krishna pouting slightly. Narrowing her eyes, Suthanu says, "That cannot be true. You always get me a present. If this plan of yours the present? What is it? Another picnic up the hills?" Suthanu squeals in joy reminiscing her last picnic with the royals of Dwaraka.

Shrugging dramatically, Krishna says, "I got you a lifetime vacation package in one of the most beautiful cities of Aryavart. Do you want to try?". Utterly confused on what is going, Babhruvahana flickers his eyes between the duo and settle on the older one. The mischief dancing in Krishna's eyes makes him realize what his uncles means and he forces himself not to facepalm.

Vaction Package? Seriously?  Babhru stares incredulously at the king not sure whether to laugh or applaud the king's way of approaching the wedding proposal. His mind reminds him to enjoy as his job is made much easier by his dear uncle. If only his sister lets it be that easy. He feels like shaking some sense into his sister when she utters her next words.

"Which city? But forever? We cannot be on a vacation forever. That would make is dull and productive." Pretending to be deep in thought, Krishna says, "You do have a point which also shows you do not want to go to Dwaraka. Bhanu will be sad when he hears that you refused the offer." Perfecting his mischief, he shakes his head negatively and sighs sadly.

Suthanu's eyes widen in shock and she blushes hearing the name of a certain prince. "Uncle Krishna? What are you implying? Why would I go to Dwaraka and why would prince Bhanu be sad?" Unable to control his laughter, Babhru pushes his fists against his mouth to contain his giggles. But unfortunately for him, his uncle ends up providing more reasons to double over laughing.

Sighing sadly, he says, "Yes. Even your aunt Bhama will be sad. She asked me to propose this idea for your permanent vacation in Dwaraka. Poor me. This time she won't be impressed with the parijat tree too. What will I have to do to pacify my sad son and wife now. Hey Narayan! Help me!" He dramatically yells out the last part.

Slowly shifting to Suthanu's side, Babhru nudges her hissing, "He means your wedding idiot." Gasping in realization, Suthanu blushes in embarrassment and lets out, "Maybe you should talk to father about this." Huffing, Krishna says, "What use is it now? If you are not interested, what is the point of talking to your father. I will find some way to pacify my wife and son."

Deciding to help his sister, Babhruvahana steps in saying, "No uncle Krishna. Uncle Yudhishtir will definitely agree to the package. I mean wedding. That is what I came here to talk about."

Narrowing his eyes at the kids, Krishna says, "Who said anything about a wedding? Also, do you mean Maharaj Yudhishtir sent you to talk about wedding proposals? Are you lying? He would never do that. That is not the way things are done. Anyway, now that you mentioned a wedding, Suthanu, I told the king of Mathura that I will consider his proposal of marrying his daughter to Bhanu. What are your thoughts on it?"
