【?Chapter 40】

Start from the beginning

Once Joseph was certain I wasn't going to try and lunge at D'Arby again, he let go of me and when to sit Polnareff's body up in a chair.

"Why don't you have a drink and think things over for a bit?" D'Arby suggested as he dug into his pocket and pulled out a bar of chocolate. "Care for a piece of chocolate?" He offered and held up the bar of chocolate.

I glanced back at Jotaro and Avdol as Joseph made his way over to them. The two of them nodded and Avdol turned to Joseph and had a quiet word with him. I spun back round and glared at D'Arby. "You're on."

"I don't think so, Y/N. This is way too dangerous." Joseph marched forward and pushed me behind him. The older man stepped over to the table and slammed a bottle of whiskey and an empty glass onto the table. Without a word, he unscrewed the top of the whiskey and poured it into the glass. Once the glass was filled to the brim, he placed the bottle to the side. "I'm curious. Do you have any idea on what surface tension is, Barbie?" Joseph asked as he pulled a chair out from under the table and sat down opposite D'Arby. I scoffed at the name Joseph called him and quickly recomposed myself.

"My name is D'Arby. You know it's not Barbie," he growled. "And I assume that you're referring to how the liquor appears to almost overflow, but stays in the glass?" He pointed a finger at the glass and rested an elbow on the table, and asked, "Is there a point to all this build up?"

"We're playing a game. The rules are simple. We will each take turns dropping coins into the glass," Joseph explained as he placed a pile of coins onto the table between them. "Whoever makes the liquor spill first, loses."

"Old man..." Jotaro said in a warning tone.

"Mr. Joestar... You're not going to..." I trailed off with wide eyes.

A moment of silence filled the air before Joseph spoke up. "Exactly right! I'm going to bet my soul!"

"Okay!" D'Arby grinned.

"You've got to be kidding! You can't go through with it, Mr. Joestar! This man is a good-for-nothing cheater!" Avdol growled and pointed an accusing finger at D'Arby.

"He won't cheat this time. I've decided on the rules myself, so I'll be fine. Jotaro—" he glanced over at his grandson "—keep a close eye on him, so he doesn't try anything funny."

I glanced over at Avdol and reached out to gently tug on the sleeve of his robe. He glanced down at me, and I nodded behind us to signal that I wanted to have a quiet word with him. Avdol turned to face me as I turned by back to D'Arby. "Why isn't he asking me to keep an eye out for any cheating? Scarlet Phantom can read his mind," I whispered.

"I briefly spoke to Mr. Joestar about our plan, and he wants you out of the picture, so D'Arby doesn't pick up on your Stand's abilities beforehand. Use this time to work out how he thinks, and if worse comes to worst, you will be our wild card," Avdol explained.

I glanced back over my shoulder and back to Avdol. "Okay, fine. But I hope for Mr. Joestar's sake he doesn't lose."

Avdol and I turned back to watch the game unfold. Avdol asked Jotaro what had happened so far, and he told us that we only missed D'Arby examining the glass, and now the game was about to begin.

"Did you see if he tampered with the glass at all?" I asked.

"I couldn't see him do anything as far as I'm aware."

D'Arby was the first to go, and he picked up five coins. "Take your hands off the table," he ordered Joseph. The older man obliged and slid his hands off the table as D'Arby started to lower five coins towards the liquor. I held my breath as I watched and hoped that this wouldn't spell certain doom for Joseph. I decided to take this opportunity to listen in on D'Arby's mind.
