"(Y/n)! Honey, are you awake", your mom called from the living room. It was five fourteen A.M. The twenty-third of November. You had just finished packing the last of your things and were in the process of zipping up your suitcase.
"Yeah, I'm up! Just about to put my shoes on", you yelled back, picking up your luggage and then turning around to slip your feet into your shoes. You speed-walked out of the room, making sure the curtains and the door were closed. You patted your body down to check for your phone, nodding to yourself when you felt it in your jean pocket. "Ready?"
"Yep," your mom answered, grabbing her keys from the coffee table. You followed her out of her penthouse, closing the door behind you for her. She locked everything up, turning to go to the elevator.
"Did you let anyone know that we were coming down to see them", you asked, pressing the first-floor button.
"No. I wanted it to be a surprise", your mom said giggling, bouncing in place. You smiled softly, turning to face forward again.
"You...didn't happen to tell anyone else anything, did you?" There was hesitation in your voice and you fumbled with your suitcase handle, staring at your feet.
"Of course not, sweetie. The only person I told was Miguel, and as you know he had a pretty calm reaction to the news. No one else knows but us three." You nodded, sighing softly.
"I kind of hoped you would have told them though — I'm not sure what I'll say to them once we get there."
"You don't have to tell them anything, you know that", your mom said sternly, touching your shoulder. Her eyebrows were slightly furrowed, her brown eyes spewing concern.
"But I do though, Mom. I feel like I owe them an explanation for why she isn't there. They love her too..." She sighed, smiling softly at you.
"I suppose you're right. But if you aren't comfortable talking about it, you need to let them know that. You can always explain when you're ready." You nodded again as the elevator dinged, the doors opening to reveal the grocery store in the building. "Come on. The airport is going to be a half an hour ride. There shouldn't be any traffic, but let's hurry anyway." You followed your mom to the next set of elevators that led into the parking garage, stepping into the steel box with her. She chose the second-floor button, the doors sliding closed a moment later.
Once those same doors slid open again, both you and your mom exited the elevator, heading across the parking garage to where her cars were stored. She set her suitcases down in front of the metal door, pulling on the chain around her neck. Attached to the end of it was the key used to unlock the door to reveal her cars. Clever. Your mom stuck the key into the wall, turning it. You watched as the button lit up green, shining brightly through its glass lid. You flicked it open, pressing the large button as your mom picked her bags back up. You waited patiently beside her for the door to open before walking to her black jeep. She unlocked the car with a beep, the trunk popping open on its own from the click of a button. You piled your things into the trunk along with your mom's, walking around the car to get into the passenger seat. "Are you going to rent a car once we get there", you asked your mom when she started the car.
"Sure am. Do you want me to get you one as well so you don't have to tag along with me whenever you want to go somewhere?"
"That's up to you, Mom", you said through a yawn. You held your hand in front of your mouth, your eyes misting up slightly. Your mom hummed in response, pulling out onto the open road. It was still dark outside. The sun hasn't even come up yet... You leaned your elbow against the car door, resting your head in your hand. You watched as the streetlights passed by the car, the soft yellow light of them falling across your face. You yawned again, blinking slowly as your lids began to feel heavy. Before you knew it, you had fallen asleep.

"(Y/n). Wake up." You blinked slowly, stretching soon after. "We're here", your mom said from beside you, pushing the driver's side door open. You groaned, looking over your arm which had lines on it from sleeping in the car. You then sighed, pulling on the car door handle and getting out. You slammed the door closed behind you, walking to the back of the car to retrieve your bags. You slung your (1f/c) duffel bag over your shoulder before pulling your (2f/c) suitcase out of the trunk next. You closed the lid to the trunk down after your mom retrieved her things and then calmly followed her into the airport building.
"I hate airports", you groaned, sticking close to your mom. There were people everywhere, pushing and shoving, faces glued to phone screens, etc. Your mom chuckled softly, pressing her shoulder to yours.
"I'm not so fond of them either, sweetie. I bet we could clear a path quickly if Jasper were with us." You laughed, looking ahead as you continued to walk.
"Yeah...we could, couldn't we?" Your mom smiled at you softly, kissing your temple before stopping at the back of a long line. "How is this line already so long? It's only six o'five", you said, looking at your phone screen.
"This is Empire City, baby. On top of that, it's close to the holidays. People are trying to go and see their family just like we are", your mom said with a chuckle. You whined like a child, putting your head on her shoulder as the line slowly moved forward.
By the time you got to the front, it was almost six-thirty. Your mom told the lady behind the desk her name, how many tickets she paid for, and when she bought them. The woman read the information back to her kindly, printing out the tickets a moment later and then handing them to your mother. Your mom nodded, giving her a small 'thank you' before dragging you along to the check-in counters of your airline. "Do you have your ID or passport, (y/n)", your mom asked as she rummaged through her purse. You hummed, patting your back jean pockets.
"Yeah", you answered, handing the small booklet to your mom. She nodded, taking it from you and putting it in her left hand along with hers as the two of you waited in yet another line. The check-in line wasn't nearly as long as the other one, which brought you some type of joy. Once you and your mom got to the counter, your mom handed the lady your plane tickets along with your passports. The older woman looked them over before handing them back to your mom and then asking each of you to set your luggage in front of her. She tagged each of your bags, turning around to put both you and your mom's suitcases on a conveyor belt behind her. She then handed your mom the boarding passes for the flight, pointing towards another line of people in front of metal detectors. You groaned again, shaking your mom's arm as she laughed at you.
"TSA. Everyone's worst enemy", she said with a giggle. Your mom then handed you your passport back, along with your boarding pass. You stood in line in front of her, getting prepared to take off both your jacket and shoes. Your bag went through the scanner first, one of the security guards pulling it to the side to look through it. You raised an eyebrow gently, walking through the full-body scanner and then standing to the side to put your shoes back on once you were cleared. The guard looking through your bag zipped it back up, and you quickly took it from the conveyor belt, holding it in front of you. Your mom went through the full-body scanner next, only for the thing to beep. The guard standing in front of her went to pat her down and your mother rolled her eyes, pulling her necklace out of her shirt. "It was just this. I don't have anything else on me of danger to you or anyone else in here." The guard nodded, letting her continue through. She then snatched her suitcase from the other guard's hands, looking him up and down. "I don't take kindly to a man looking through my items. I assure you, there isn't anything illegal or of banning in mine, or my daughter's suitcase. If you would excuse me, we'll be going to the boarding area now with no problems." You gasped quietly when your mom grabbed your wrist, pulling you along to the boarding area.
"What was that all about, Ma", you asked hesitantly after sitting down next to her in one of the empty benches near your gate.
"Those two men always seem to be workin' whenever I want or have to travel. They're extremely irritatin', and have fun messing with women who are first-time flyers or just aren't familiar with the whole security process. I wasn't 'bout to be late foolin' around with them." You giggled, covering your mouth as you watched her rant. "What's so funny?"
"Just the fact that when you're upset your southern accent comes out", you replied, relaxing on the bench. Your mom chuckled, nudging your shoulder.
"It does not."
"Yeah, it does."
"Doesn't."
"Does." Before your mom could counter again, a man came over an intercom, announcing the departure of your gate number. You and your mom stood up, making your way to yet another counter and waiting for instructions from the gate agent. Soon you were carrying just your duffel bag with you outside towards the airplane, your mom beside you. The two of you boarded the aircraft and your mom then showed one of the flight attendants the part of her boarding pass she had left. The flight attendant then led you and your mother to a different area of the plane that was designated for first-class flyers. You put your duffel bag in one of the overhead compartments, helping your mom put her smaller bag up as well. Your mom sighed heavily as she crashed into the soft leather seats of the airplane. "Finally, some peace", she mumbled. You giggled, sitting down in the seat across from her.
"Aren't you glad you got first-class seats?" She nodded, kicking her shoes off smoothly.
"I think I might invest in a private plane at some point. What do you think, dear?"
"That's a lot of money, Ma", you replied, relaxing into the comfortable chair.
"Correct, but I'm sure I have enough put away for a small one." You hummed in agreement, exhaling through your nose.
"I say to go over it with Miguel first before anything. You might give the poor man a heart attack though."
"Oh, I've done more extravagant things before", she said with the wave of a hand. "Just make sure to wake me up when we get there." You chuckled at how your mother's voice trailed off at the end as she fell asleep. You sighed, turning your head to look out of the window as the aircraft began to roll down the runway. You had been on a plane plenty of times before, but the feeling of the vehicle lifting in the air always seemed to make your stomach drop. You never did like heights. Wonder how I was able to handle Jasper, you thought with a chuckle, leaning against the palm of your hand.
