Kimi was perplexed by what just happened last night. She didn't know how to think nor did she know what to do. With everything happening so fast, with her family slowly falling apart and now an ancient myth was trying to make a deal with her, to say she was overwhelmed is an understatement.
Her mother hadn't been eating correctly and was always crying in self pity. She couldn't even bring herself to sleep in her shared room even after Kimi tried to tell her to go rest many times. On top of it all, she quickly realized that they have to do something to get an income since most of it was from her father. Since he is gone, whatever they have left isn't going to help them in the long term.
She sighs in exhaustion, it was taking a huge mental toll on her as more and more weight was put onto her shoulders.
The only kind of nice thing that happened after her father's funeral was that many people from the law agency that knows him well would come and visit her home. They would check up on her and her mother, the most sympathetic ones would stay for a few hours just talking and trying to console whatever was left of her small family. Sometimes, they would bring gifts to her door step.
She was forever grateful for their compassion, they didn't have to come to make sure the family was fine but the people who visited were very kind and seemed very upset about her father's death as well.
Her best friend, Arata, had also visited her a few times since she hadn't been to school after the funeral. He did his best to listen and talk to her. Helping her around the house or sometimes trying to talk to her mother.
She never told her mother or those policemans about her interaction with the kitsune. How could she? If she told her mother, she might further go into an emotional turmoil. If she told the people who visited her, hell- they'd think she had gone crazy because of the death of her father. She might be taken away into some mental institute and far from her mother, which would also send her mother into further distress. The only person she could maybe talk to is Arata, but she wouldn't know how that would go.
It's been 4 days.
Maybe if she could.. some make more money for the both of them. Maybe then she could get her mother a therapist, she wouldn't have to worry about money after the funeral. However, since she was still in junior high, there's no way she could do any job. And worse is that Kimi was quirkless. Quirks were in high demand and companies never exactly wanted to hire those without something great to contribute.
Maybe if she had a quirk, she would go into UA and make something out of it. Business course? Support? possibly even Hero? They are paid a lot and it had been her long dream.
If she can...
"If you free me from the seal, I'll lend you a part of my powers."
She could. A part of an ancient power, who would give up such a deal. It was a once in a lifetime deal, one that she could use to turn her life around for the better. However, the giant risk is that she had to free an allegedly evil entity to the world, which does more harm than anything.
Then again... the foxian did say that she worked to help her. Her mother made sure of it! At least that was what she was told.
___
"...What?", The two best friends sat across from each other on Arata's bed. Confusion was written on his face at the story that his friend just spewed out.
Earlier today, Kimi had called up Arata to meet up at his house for some "advice". Since her mental state was currently screwed over, he wanted to help her as much as he could, and it seemed really important as well with how she worded her "issue in hand". Although, even if his best friend wasn't in a horrible mental state, he would have listened to her either way. What are friends for? He was also admittedly guilty that he never warned her of anything that day, so it could technically be like a redemption if he helped her.
She ended up showing at his doorstep with a cool looking scroll and a skittish expression, he was curious. He didn't get a word in before being pulled by her to his own room and locking it (which left his siblings and parents looking at him weirdly).
Then she told him all about some demon- spirit fox in her dreams trying to tie a deal with her- honestly, it sounded like she was telling him some type of crazy manwha plot that she read after watching newtube's shorts for 4 hours. "Are you... serious with me right now?"
"Arata please- you have to help me! I don't know what I'm doing or what I'm supposed to think right now. I know it sounds crazy but it's real, and I don't think I can have much time to just ignore a freaking kitsune from who knows where and how powerful they are!", She cried, clenching on the scroll with trembling hands. "I-I haven't been sleeping much after the interaction and it's like my head is spinning in circles the more I think about it, I didn't have anyone to tell or someone to talk to-"
"Hey, hey! Stop that, I believe you! I believe you ok?", He interupts her rambling, putting both his hands on her trembling shoulders in hopes of calming her down. It seemed to work a bit as her eyes looked up to him. "It's just.. a lot to take in y'know?"
He sighs and rakes a hand through his hair. "I mean, it's a huge family secret that you've got. I feel like I shouldn't even know about it for god's sake."
"Right?! It's absolutely nuts and I don't think I can think straight right now."
He clenched his teeth awkwardly as he scratched his head. "And you're hoping for my take?"
She became silent for a moment, her guilty conscience taking over as she felt selfish for dragging her friend, who had NOTHING to do with her family, into her issue. It should have been herself that should be taking care of her own problems. Then again, she couldn't seem to have the right enough willpower to continue on without promptly going insane.
"Something... like.. that...", She shamely utters out, her attention going back to the wooden scroll in her hands. The hand that still rests on her shoulder gently squeezes reassuringly.
"Kimi... I'm.. glad that you decided to trust me enough with this.", He started. "I just....." I don't know what to tell you.
He also didn't know what to do. Who even does in this situation? But he had to come up with something. His dear friend was clearly in distress, much more than he could imagine.
"Have you... thought about it? Your initial decision I mean"
Her lips ran into a thin line. She was hesitant about her answer, fearing that he'd judge her. "Honestly.... I wanted to accept it."
She watched as her friend's eyes widened in surprise, much to her horror. He was surprised, but he didn't blame her. If he were to be given a chance to have such a power, there's no way he would refuse just like that. Though... There's a main problem.
"Didn't you say that it's extremely dangerous since it's a literal kitsune with ACTUAL magic powers unlike our quirks?"
"Yeah but- you know! She said that she was working for me and kind of... insinuated that she had to made a deal with my parents before..?" She said, unsure of her own words.
"That... sounds extremely sketchy."
"I know I know! But like- think about it. I could finally get some powers. I could make some.. things with it. I could maybe get a job and have an income. Heck- I could maybe try out for UA! The entrance exam is free and I-I-I'll finally become a prohero and get a lot of money for my mom and help people at the same time."
He let the points sink in, and it was true. Her life would change drastically if she were to accept the offer. "It still doesn't negate the fact that we could be letting a literal freaking monster into the wild. What is this, Pokecon?"
"Dude...."
"Ok ok!", He holds up his hands in surrender. "Seriously though, I kind of... agree?"
Kimi's eyes widened in surprise at his answer before raising an eyebrow at him. She thought that he'd judge her or think she's selfish or something. "You do?"
"I mean, it would be kind of cool ain't it? If you end up as a prohero, then you'd fill your dream and bullshit. But I also don't think it's the brightest idea to just let a creature that we know nothing about free like that."
There it is.
"Maybe... there's a better way? Have you talked to.. her again? You know... negotiate."
".... negotiate...?", She stared at him with a pointed expression. "I don't really think that's a good idea. What if she gets angry and then sucks the soul out of my body or... my breath out of my body?"
"I don't know. Maybe try...?", He trails off, eyes averting hers as she brings up more reasons that it was a bad idea. His gaze ran towards his desk computer. It settles for a moment, then an idea pops up in his head.
"-besides I don't wanna-"
"Wait! I have an idea. Hold on.", he interrupts her again and rushes off to his desktop. Powering up the screen and immediately goes to the search engine.
Kimi walks over to his desk and looks over his shoulder, curious on what idea he could have about her situation. Her face looks in interest the moment her eyes are laid on the search bar. "Psychics?"
[ *Now that quirks exist, the people who would claim that they connect to the "spirituals" such as psychic, fortune telling, tarot cards, necromancy, etc. are very much real. However, scams still do exist just like any other scams so people would most likely look for the psychics that have good names or are well known for all the accurate events they predict or claim.]
"Yeah! We obviously don't know what in the world we are doing, but if we can contact someone that has known about it, then we can ask them for their opinion. Besides, if actual magic and seals like that existed back then, then one of these people is bound to have some knowledge of it right?"
She thought about his explanation. Well, he did make a good point. If you don't know about something, then ask someone who really does. "Wow... I never thought about it like that."
"Glad you have me around then."
___
Contacting a psychic?
You scoff at their proposal. The grip you had on your arms starts to tighten, making the claws dig deeper into your skin as anger and dread fills your being. Not again, not again will you be shut out by these humans.
No.... if I recall correctly, the sorcerers in this era are weaker than before. They depend too much on their newfound medicare powers.
That's right.. It's not like it's the first time something like this happened. You know their spells, you had 2 centuries to pick up on the pieces. If the new sorcerer is as incompetent as you thought, then you'll have a good opening.
A smile makes its way back to your face as you calmed down by that reassurance.
Try your best pawn... I will not be taken down again.
