A/N: Cliche name, I know I know....I'm lazy ok?
Warning: Long
Marcy woke up to Olivia rapping loudly on her door.
"Rise and shine Master Marcy! We have important matters to discuss. Get ready, and then head to the throne room for another meeting with King Andrias at 8:00 sharp. Don't be late." The newt announced, emphasizing the last sentence.
"Coming!" The girl called back, promptly leaping out of bed, wide awake, and ready for the day. Her gaze fell upon her uniform, and her cheerful attitude faltered for a moment as she recalled the events of the past day. Shaking it off, Marcy threw it on and rushed out her door.
Marcy burst into the throne room, very much out of breath. Andrias, Lady Olivia, and General Yunan were enjoying plates of yellow stuff, with Olive and Yunan sharing a table at the foot of Andrias's throne. Someone was missing.
Checking the time, she let out a sigh of relief. "Whew! Starting off bright and early! Man I can tell today is gonna be grea-woah!" She exclaimed before promptly tripping on air.
"Good morning to you too Mar," Y/N chuckled from behind her, loosely gripping Marcy's cloak.
"Hehe, sorry."
"Greeting's Master Marcy! Come, join us! I had the cook whip up some of those omelettes you told us about, and I gotta say, they are just scrumptious!" The King boomed from his throne.
"Glad to be of service!" Marcy replied, grinning.
Lady Olivia clapped her hands and a few servants hurried over to place a hot plate of fresh cricket omelette along with a set of utensils. Marcy plopped down in the chair and started munching in.
"Aren't you gonna have any? It tastes great, even with the cricket legs." She asked her friend, who merely stood to the side, watching.
"Oh I finished breakfast ahead of time, since y'know, you're not allowed to see my face." They said.
"Right," Marcy thought for a moment, wondering what they possibly had to hide under there. She noticed that the feathers on their mask were a lot messier than usual, one part in particular seemed to have been hastily stuck back into place. Suspicious, Ray's definitely not lasting long in Suspicion Island.
She quickly finished her omelette, deciding to go into that later. Right now, it was business time!
"So, Olivia said something about important matters?" She asked.
Andrias nodded, "It's true. The Raven came back from their last mission unsuccessful. But this confirmed that there is in fact a mysterious arsonist on the loose. Newtopia's security has been lacking ever since our Night Guards have been mysteriously disappearing on missions. It is likely that whoever the newt wearing the golden snake mask was responsible. He has not done anything too big, but he's the biggest threat we have right now, and he needs to be taken out. Any suggestions everyone?"
Everyone turned to Marcy in unison, who was deep in thought. "We should further investigate the places he has attacked, maybe find out his goals. We don't have a lot of info on this guy, and he'll be expecting us to send more troops, so we should hold back until his next move. I'm sure I can find a pattern and predict where he's gonna attack next based on that!" She decided. The adults discussed this for a bit, before agreeing on it.
"Hey, do you wanna hang out?" Marcy turned, slightly surprised.
"Me?" She gestured to herself. "Pfft, of course you meant me, who else could you have meant? After all, you are talking to me, so it's obviously me." She chuckled, thinking Oh frog, this is so awkward, they're probably cringing under their mask right now, I don't even blame them. I'm probably so red too, darn it. Quick, change the subject! "Sure, do you wanna come over, or just hang?"
The guard shrugged, "I'm fine with anything, really. I'd prefer if it was more private, but I just want to have a casual chat with another human for once."
Marcy laughed, "Must be tough be stuck here for...uh, how long were you stuck here again? A couple months?"
Y/N thought for a moment, before saying, "About 2 years now."
The noirette stopped in her tracks, turning to her friend, jaw hanging open. The guard stopped too, cocking their head to one side before realizing.
"Dang."
"Yeah! That's like, jeez! That long?"
"Yeah." Y/N replied softly, almost as stunned at how much time flies when you're in another universe.
"That's it, you're coming with me to my room, and I'm gonna get you snacks and make you Wu family egg fried rice and binge you're favorite tv all night." Declared Marcy determinedly.
They started to protest, insisting that they were fine, but to no avail.
"Fine," They finally agreed, "I really like the movie War of the Warlocks, maybe we can watch that?"
The noirette gasped, "Oh my frog! I LOVE War of the Warlocks too! Man, I can just tell, we're gonna be great friends. Now come on, we've got a kitchen to raid!"
Y/N giggled, feeling warm inside. "Sure, come on! I'll show you my stash."
"You are the COOLEST, MOST FUN person I've met here BY FAR, literally how do you do it?"
*3 hours later*
Marcy's phone screen illuminated her darkening room.
"Your puny little resistance stands no chance against my undead hoard!" The lych king cried, green eyes glowing menacingly as he pointed at the army of various species standing in his way, dwarfed by the skeletal warriors that surrounded them.
"I know what you're thinking, the resistance stands no chance against the Lych King's undead horde," Marcy commentated to an invisible audience over the intense music.
"But little do they know, this entire battle was just a distraction so that our heroes can sneak through the back of the castle, and destroy the Crystal Crown of Tantimore!" Y/N joined in enthusiastically, Marcy's blanket draped over their shoulders like a cape.
"Which is likely based on the Carthaginian general, Hannibal's, strategy while invading Rome!" The two finished at the same time, glancing at each other before bursting into laughter.
"I thought I was the only one who noticed!" The girl exclaimed, wiping a tear from her eye and bouncing up and down.
"Me too! Well, obviously, since we just said the same observation together." Replied, slightly more awkward at the last part.
"Oh! Oh! Here comes my favorite part!" Marcy said, lowering her voice to not ruin the affect. She looked over to her masked friend, seated cross legged next to her, almost expecting them to be asleep, but they were leaning forward, just as eager as she was.
"You'll never defeat us Lych King!" A short, dark-skinned elf holding an axe yelled, "not when we have the power of friendship." Marcy breathed out the line with the protagonist, fully immersed again.
Soon, the end credits rolled.
Y/N leaned back, "Wow! Haven't seen that in a while. I've been nostalgic for that for way too long, unfortunately I still don't have a phone. Thanks Mar, I owe you one."
Marcy giggled, "Anytime, 2 years without War of the Warlocks is literal torture."
They bother laughed, before silence fell on the dimly lit room.
"I should probably get going," Y/N starting out, "It's getting late, I don't want to take up any more of your time."
"Oh, no! Please stay. I'd..like to get to know you better, if that's allowed, and of course, if you're ok with it."
The Raven turned, surprised. "Sure, I'd love to! Movies are classic hang out activities, but we don't really talk at all." Shit, that sounded offending, quick. Add something! They laughed awkwardly, "Well, unless you're us, am I right? Because I honestly had so much fun geeking out over War of the Warlocks with you!"
"Yeah! Of course."The girl laughed too, before grabbing her journal and pen, clicking rapidly, "So.. I've got a bajillion questions that I need you to answer about yourself!" She patted the cushion across from her, "You miiiggghht wanna sit down for this.."
"Sure, go crazy. Obviously, I can't tell you 'classified' stuff and I can't take off my mask." They shrugged, plopping back down.
"Of course, of course." Marcy said, her expression drooping just a bit, "So did you get here through the music box too? Don't be shy about leaving out any details."
Y/N rested their head in their hand, "Well, I was kinda just messing around with it in an old antique shop I often went to, I tried to get it to work, it played some song, before opening, and sucking me in. Next thing I knew, I was in some really humid forest."
"Uh-huh, uh-huh." The noirette looked up, her hand still feverishly jotting down every word that came out of they're mouth. "How'd you become the ✨Raven✨? Also, why d'you need to wear a mask?"
"So I'm just gonna continue my story, k? I wandered the forest for a few days I think, before some Newtopian guards found me."
"Oooh, was General Yunan leading them? Is that how she became like, your sense? Oh my gosh, this is just like this awesome JRPJ I just started, Vagabond-"
"Do you still want the story or not?" Y/N interrupted.
Marcy ran her finger along her mouth, and made a motion that looked like she was locking a lock and throwing away the key before giving a thumbs up.
"We'll say the questions for later. As I was saying, I was found by a group of Newtopian Guards. Yes, Yunan was one of them. She stumbled upon the 'nest' I'd made for myself filled with bits and pieces of junk while bragging about how brave she was. Fortunately, her titles weren't as many and she was just Yunan back then so introductions were a lot shorter. She gave me the nickname 'Little Corvid', since they were birds who scavenged for junk and put it in their nests. They brought me to the king, who thought I'd be useful as a guard since I was taller and stronger than a lot of the amphibians. So, he got Yunan to train me in martial arts, swordsmanship, all that, and Olivia and some others to catch me up on Amphibian history. Rumors fly in Newtopia, and people started getting suspicious about Andrias leading a dangerous creature into Newtopia, so he had to calm them down by making a huge announcement out of it. Yunan's nickname stuck, too, so he turned it into 'the Raven' 'cause he said it had 'more flair, you get me?'. He told the Newtopians I was something Yunan brought back from a mission, and he had tamed it and turned it into some fighting machine or whatever. He gave me the mask to add more drama to the story, telling them I was terrifying to look at. They weren't convinced at first, but I slowly grew on them and now I'm sorta a minor celebrity."
Marcy's eyes widened, gazing through the eye holes of the dark, feathered mask, trying to make out what was underneath. "No way, you did all that? At 11 years old? And, a minor celebrity?! How come I'm not like that!"
The raven shrugged, brushing it off, "It's nothing, really. They just need a cool mascot to look up to, that's all. And I had to train, like, everyday for 2 years to get like this. It took time. It took hard work. Plus...it helped distract me from memories of home." They looked away, their tone dropping, but shaking it off quickly. "As for your second question, Andrias probably just doesn't want the citizens thinking 2 monsters showed up out of no where therefore aliens are invading or whatever. Newts may be at the top of the social-economic system, but they can be quite dim."
"I actually disagree," Marcy said, not looking up from her journal, still mindlessly scribbling away, "The newts I've met are all incredibly well-read!"
"Welp, you haven't met a lot of them. My turn now. How did you get here? Same conditions." Y/N asked.
Marcy's excited expression fell a little, "Well, yeah, same box and same light. And with friends too, they're probably fine, no worries. I heard you failed your mission yesterday, what happen?"
Their posture slumped a bit at this, she could almost see the frown forming on their face. "Oh. He just caught me off guard, that's all. The place was full of dust and ash, you couldn't see anything. The only reason I hadn't choked to death or die from the smell or lung cancer or something was because of my mask." They grumbled, running their gloved hands over the messed up feathers. "As you can see, I also got punched in the face multiple times. Long story short, it didn't go as planned. Anyways, you mentioned you were gonna meet you're cadets yesterday? How'd that go?"
She looked down, "It went fine, thanks for asking."
"What happened?"
"Nothing."
Y/N sighed, she was obviously hiding something. "Look, bottling up your emotions is never good. How do I know? If it was fine, you'd be all bubbly and stuff and ramble on how awesome it went. It's ok, you can tell me. I can't really tell anyone anyways, the only people I'm close with are Yunan, Olivia, and Andrias."
"Well, I didn't have the best day yesterday either. My cadets...didn't exactly like me. Of course, there's the 'bizarre warm-blooded creature from another world', can't not be suspicious of that. Apparently their old captain, Captain Ernst, was this super cool, and kind, and honorable dude, who went missing on some super secret top secret mission, so I've got some HUGE shoes to fill!"
Marcy opened her mouth again, as if she were going to say something else, but shook her head, "y-yeah, not the best day considering most of Newtopia loves me, or at least, looks up to me since I did a bunch of great stuff for the city."
There was obviously something she was holding back, but Y/N let it slide, not wanting to push her into telling them. They put an arm around her, "maybe you could arrange some bonding activity that you'd all like? Like Creatures and Caverns! I bet they'd love it, since they kinda are the characters in the game."
"That's....actually a great idea!" Marcy exclaimed, eyes lighting up a bit. Turning, she hugged her friend tightly. "Thanks Ray, it's been really nice, but I really gotta plan tomorrow's campaign! Maybe tomorrow?"
Y/N smiled under their mask, "Glad to help, g'night Mar."
"G'night," she replied, not looking up from her notebook, which she was scribbling furiously in.
The guard chuckled, bet the game's gonna be on hell of a ride for her cadets.
A/N: Holy shit, I didn't update for like a month(which I'm sorry for, but writer's block and school have been constantly delaying progress) and now this book's got 800+ reads? Thanks so much guys!
