If your story goes on with the same general pace, be that fast or slow, then your readers will become used to it and lose interest.

Remember the approach of rising and falling action. Instead of a straight line of action from beginning to end, think of your story the way that you are supposed to go up the stairs to the WPRS attic (remember, the Witch likes it when you do it this way). Take two steps forward and one step back.

Present something big and action filled...like your encounter with the drunken Windigo, but don't go directly into talking about your argument with the banshee. Instead, give those readers a little breathing room for a moment and build back up to the next big event. That will give them enough time to begin to anticipate what is coming next, which is vitally important for creating a happy reader. And a happy reader is one that will keep reading!
