~~~Tyler's POV~~~
"I'm so jealous!" exclaimed Dot. She banged her fork against the top of the kitchen table, exasperated. "I wish I didn't have to go to school!"
"Well, I still have training," I offered with a shrug, but she just harrumphed and started on her last pancake. Dot and I had been hanging out over the weekend and I had grown to really like her. I saw Fae, Rhett, and Fletcher, but was rarely in the same room as Bo. He seemed to be avoiding me, and I didn't know why it bothered me so much.
Speak of the devil, and he shall appear.
"Dot, if you want a ride to school, I'm leaving now," said Bo as he walked into the room. He grabbed a fork and shoved a piece of Dot's pancake in his mouth, much to her dismay. Bo looked up, and when his dark eyes locked with mine, he froze.
Quick! Say something to him, encouraged my wolf.
"Hi," I blurted out. I mentally kicked myself for sounding so stupid.
Brilliant, Tyler, huffed my wolf sarcastically.
"Hey Tyler," he replied, and then he looked down at Dot, who was glaring at him. "I'm serious. We'll be late if we don't leave now."
"Fine!" She said, hopping off of her stool. She dumped the rest of her food in the garbage and deposited the soiled dish in the sink. Dot grabbed her backpack off of the floor and put her hand on her hips. "I'm ready!" She flounced out of the kitchen and I heard the front door open and slam shut a few seconds later.
"I should go," Bo said, and he gestured behind him to where Dot had disappeared.
"Right," I drawled, "I'll see you later, I guess."
"Bye Tyler," he said as he backed out of the room, "Good luck with your first day of training." And then he was gone, and I was by myself. All of the other werewolves were either at school or work, save for a few that were leaders in the pack, like Stark and Anton.
I finished my bowl of Frosted Flakes and put my bowl into the dish washer. I walked through the empty rooms until I found a backdoor, and I slipped out into the backyard. The air was chilly, and I pulled the hood of a borrowed brown sweatshirt up over my head.
I heard the door slide open and shut behind me, and then footsteps on the grass. I turned around to find Anton smiling at me. I only talked to him once, and it was a very brief conversation, but he seemed really nice. I had learned from Fletcher that Anton was Fae's father, which meant that she was the next Beta if he died or decided to retire.
"Are you ready to train?" he asked.
"Ready as I'll ever be," I said with a sigh. I was nervous to start training because I had no idea what to do. My parents never did anything to help better my wolf, and so I was scared I would embarrass myself.
"Alright, then shift," he ordered.
"Okay," I said, but then I remembered something and froze. "I don't think I can."
"What do you mean?"
"I don't I can shift," I explained, "While I was in captivity, they would inject with me with some sort of suppressor about every two weeks so that I couldn't shift, and it hasn't been two weeks since they last gave it to me."
Anton frowned. "Do you know what the name of the suppressor?" he asked.
"I think it started with an A," I replied. Was there an antidote or something? Anton thought for a moment, and then he started to chuckle. "What's so funny?" I asked, confused and somewhat offended.
"The suppressor they used is called Arianus and you're immune to it."
My eyes narrowed. "What are you talking about?"
"Well," Anton said, "They used it too often. By now, your DNA would have changed so that it doesn't affect you."
"So I can shift?"
"So you can shift."
Now I was terrified. I hadn't shifted in over three years. Would my wolf form be pitiful? Would I even be worth training? Did I have any chance of being accepted into the pack?
"Shift now, Tyler," commanded Anton. I hesitated, but started to strip out of my clothes. I used refuse to strip in front of people, even it was just my mom or dad, when I shifted, because I was a self-conscious preteen. But now, it didn't matter to me. I had been naked in front of the hunters before for my torture, so I had grown out of it.
The only part of my body that I was really uncomfortable showing was my scars.
I dropped my clothes into a pile and closed my eyes. I let out a deep breath, and suddenly I could feel myself shifting. I opened my eyes a few seconds later and looked down to see familiar sandy paws.
This feels amazing! exclaimed my wolf. I yipped in delight and stretched out my muscles, savoring the feeling of being in my wolf form.
"Tyler," called Anton, and I looked up at him. "I'm going to shift, and all we are going to do today is assess your skills. Then, tomorrow, we'll start strengthening your wolf." I nodded in understanding, and he started to pull off his shirt.
My eyes widened, and I turned around so that I wouldn't see him naked. I may not have a problem stripping to shift in front of people, but Anton was Fae's dad, and I didn't need to see him naked. I mean, I barely knew the guy!
Anton barked, and I turned back to face the large black wolf who had led the other wolves on the attack of the hunters. He was a lot bigger than me, and his black fur was a lot more menacing than my dark yellow fur.
Awesome, whispered my wolf.
Anton nodded once and then he leaned back on his haunches. I did the same, and with a howl, he launched himself at me.
He knocked me on my back and landed on top of me. Anton snapped at my neck, his teeth just brushing my fur. I squealed and squirmed, but I couldn't shake him off.
Fight back, Tyler, screamed my wolf. You can fight back now!
I can fight back.
My eyes narrowed, and a low growl escaped from my lips. I got my back legs under Anton's body and heaved him off me with all my might. I rolled off my back and sprang up. I felt empowered. I had never been able to fight back against my torturers, so this felt new and amazing.
I curled my lip and threw myself at Anton. I scratched at him and nipped and let my wolf completely take over my body. Pretty soon, I forgot I was fighting Anton. Instead, I saw the face of Drake mocking me and fury coursed through my body.
I couldn't see what or where I was hitting, but I went insane. The voice of Drake and Luca and the others filled my ears, and I started to panic. I couldn't calm myself down and felt the old emotions of fear and pain seeping back into my mind.
I squeezed my eyes shut, and I could feel myself shifting back into my human form. Hot tears were flowing down my cheeks, and I quickly wiped them away. I pulled on the purple t-shirt I had been wearing and looked up to see Anton had changed back to his human form as well.
"I'm sorry," I mumbled. "I don't know what happened."
"It's fine, Tyler," he said assured, his voice genuine. "I think I saw what I needed to see anyways."
That didn't sound good. "And?" I prompted, not really want to hear the answer.
"I think you're sloppy," he said bluntly. I looked down at the grass to try and hide my flushing cheeks. "But," my head snapped up, "I think that's because you've never been trained before."
"Oh."
"You've got great potential, Tyler," said Anton with a smile. "We just need to sharpen your skills. You'll make a great warrior yet."
"Really?" I asked, surprised.
"Really."
~~~Bo's POV~~~

My plan wasn't working. Not at all.

I thought that maybe if I avoided Tyler, I wouldn't feel the pull to her. Of course, even if I wasn't physically near Tyler, I was thinking about her.

She had started training with Anton today. My father thought it best she didn't go to school because she was three years behind. Not that she wasn't smart; Dot told me that Tyler had actually helped her with some of her homework over the weekend.

I had asked Dot a lot about Tyler, since she seemed to have spent a lot of time with my little sister. My inquiries no doubt made Dot suspicious, but I didn't care; she would find out sooner or later.

Dot said that Tyler was quiet, but she could be really funny. However, Dot also mentioned how Tyler sometimes got this faraway look in her eye, and sometimes it looked like she was about to start crying.

It made my wolf and I angry that we could go to her and be there for her the way a mate is supposed to be there for his mate.

When I got home, Anton had pulled me aside and told me how her training went. He told me that she didn't have any technique, which I attributed to her never being trained by anyone. Anton did tell me that she was tough, and once trained, she would be an amazing warrior. I smiled like a dork the whole way back to my room.

I had eaten dinner in my room by myself, even though I knew my plan was terrible and it wouldn't work. Sooner or later, I was going to snap and tell who what she was to me.

Now, here I was, lying in bed, trying to sleep. I checked the alarm clock on my side table and groaned. It was well past midnight, and I needed to sleep. I rolled onto my back and closed my eyes, and I started to count sheep in my head. I was just starting to doze off when I felt it.

Unimaginable fear.

I sat straight up in bed and looked around. There was nothing in my room that was scaring me, so I had no idea why I felt so scared. Then, I realized it wasn't my fear.

It was Tyler's.

I jumped out of bed and sprinted through the house to the opposite side of the house to Tyler's room. I could hear her whimpering through her door, and I slipped inside as quickly and silently as I could.

Tyler was thrashing on her bed, and I could see her hair matted to her forehead with sweat. She was crying and mumbling things I couldn't understand. I settled down next to her, and watched her for a moment, unsure of what to do. Soon, I had had enough, and I decided to wake her up.

"Tyler," I called softly. She didn't respond. "Tyler," I repeated, this time louder. Still no response. "Tyler!" I said, and I shook her shoulder gently. Her eyes snapped open, and she looked around wildly until her eyes fell on me.

"Bo?" Her voice sounded weak and broken.

"You had a nightmare," I said simply. She nodded, but I could tell she had been really spooked. "Just go back to bed, okay?" I told her. I got up off the bed and started towards the door, when I felt a hand on my arm.

"Don't go. I don't want to be by myself." I turned to look at Tyler. She looked absolutely terrified, and I sighed. My dad would kill me for this, but I couldn't leave her like this.

"Alright," I said. I crossed to the other side of the bed and lay down stiffly next to her. My wolf was going crazy being this close to her, and I had to use all my strength to control myself.

"Thanks Bo," she whispered, her back to me. I smiled and stared at the ceiling.

After about ten minutes, her breathing let me know that she had fallen back asleep. I knew I should get up and go back to my room, but I couldn't make myself go. I heard Tyler yawn, and then I felt her back against my side.

My eyes widened, and I glanced next to me to see that she had snuggled closer to me.

She's asleep, encouraged my wolf. She'll never know.

I sighed and turned so that her back was against my stomach. I draped my arm over her side, and closed my eyes to go to sleep.

This felt right. This is what I wanted.
