After dinner and our curfew I sneak into the bathroom. I did more investigating. Apparently he shot himself and left the note under some towels beneath the sink, only to be found by Mononoke.
It all fits. He used oil from the gun to write the note and shot himself. All during breakfast.
Then why isn't the note finished? And how did he know they would transfer me back?
I look around some more. I can't smell the coppery scent of blood, which is a plus for me. I open some drawers and rummage through them, all the while doing my best to keep quiet.
I find nothing. I'm a fool. What did I expect? He must have a reason for what he did. Maybe he didn't want to leave a note after all. That's why he hid it under the towels. But wouldn't it have been easier to flush it or something?
Maybe he didn't want the squad members to be present and he was running out of time.
I stiffle a yawn and rest my hand on the doorframe for support. It slips and I hiss. I look at my hand that now has splinters impaled in it. That moron Mononoke was beating up doors again.
I quickly pull them out, switch off the light and blindly walk to my bed. I realize Sling slept in the top bunk so I hastily climb up the ladder.
