chapter two
"It's Clary."
It took all of the willpower Damien had not to let his jaw drop. The five of them all turned their heads to look at the Mundane who had told them to stop, and a realization hit him. They were supposed to be glamoured, so she wouldn't be able to see them unless she wasn't a mundane.
The knife in Jace's hand clattered to the floor, just as startled as Damien was. "What is this?" Alec demanded, his eyes moving from the girl to the Nephilim.
"It's a girl," Jace announced. For once, Damien shot a glare towards his friend. This was not the time, especially since the girl had gotten the attention of almost all of the club. Within seconds, however, they turned back to what they were doing. "Surely you've seen girls before, Alec. Your sister Isabelle is one." Damien and Alec made quick eye contact before turning their attention back towards the girl, which caused his heartbeat to rise.
"And she can see us," Damien added, his eyes narrowing towards her.
"Of course I can see you," the girl said. "I'm not blind, you know." Damien shook his head, about to speak until Jace took over for him.
"Oh, but you are," he replied, his voice steady and firm. He grabbed his knife that had fallen onto the concrete floor. "You just don't know it. You'd better get out of here, if you know what's good for you."
"I'm not going anywhere," she stated, crossing her arms over her chest. "If I do, you'll kill him" Damien admired the girl's stubbornness, but in this situation, he wished it would stop. Damien ran his fingers through his hair in exasperation.
"That's true," Jace admitted, giving a slight nod of his head. "What do you care if I kill him or not?"
"Be-because," the red-head spluttered. "You can't just go around killing people."
"He's not a person, sweetie," Damien stated, gesturing his head towards the demon. If only she knew.
"We aren't going around killing people, little girl," Jace told her. The demon's eyes were slitted, and Damien gripped his seraph blade tighter. "But as Damien said, that's not a person. It may look like a person and talk like a person and maybe even bleed like a person, but it's a monster."
"Jace," Isabelle hissed. Through her expression, Damien could tell she was getting annoyed. That's enough."
"You're crazy," Clary said, taking a step backwards. Damien didn't blame her, Jace could be aggressive. "I've called the police, you know. They'll be here any second."
"She's lying," Alec finally said, turning his head towards Jace. "Jace, do you-" Alec never finished his sentence.
Without warning, the blue-haired boy ripped free of the restraints that had been tying him to the pillar, and jumped onto Jace. Damien couldn't stop gasp from escaping his mouth as the two fell to the ground, the demon tearing at Jace. Damien rushed towards the two as Isabelle shrieked, the mundie-girl tripping over something that sent her crashing to the ground. The demon was still tearing at Jace, and Damien sprinted towards his best-friend, only to see that Isabelle's whip had come down across his back, causing the demon to fall to his side.
Damien lunged forward, not thinking for a second as he plunged Adorjan into the blue-haired boy's chest, causing black liquid to explode from the wound that was causing him to gurgle. Damien pulled out his seraph blade, wiping the black liquid on his pants before sheathing it. Sweat gleamed off of Damien's forehead, and he didn't bother wiping it off as he sheathed the blade. Jace pushed himself off of the ground, grimacing as Damien held a hand out to him to help him up. Jace, surprisingly, took it gratefully, scowling at the demon. "So be it," the demon hissed through his teeth. "The forsaken will take you all." The words caused Damien to shiver, though he didn't show it.
Damien watched the girl scramble to her feet, unwrapping the wire around her ankles as the boy's eyes finally rolled back, and he was still. Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed Alec rolling up Jace's sleeve to inspect the wound, and felt a pang of jealousy, but immediately scolded himself for it afterwards. Alec was simply trying to help Jace, despite the fact he knew from Izzy that Alec had a crush on Jace. Without warning, Izzy flicked her whip towards her, the end wrapping around the girl's wrist. Damien rushed towards Izzy, putting a hand on her shoulder.
"Izzy, she didn't do anything," Damien whispered, not wanting to get a Mundane girl involved in this world. Anger flared behind Izzy's eyes.
"She could've gotten Jace killed," Isabelle hissed, still not letting go of the whip, despite the girl's struggle to get it unwrapped around her wrist.
"He's crazy," the girl said, still trying to pull the whip off her wrist as it bit deeper into her skin. "You're all crazy. What do you think you are, vigilante killers? The police-"
Damien raised an eyebrow as Jace interrupted her. "The police usually aren't interested unless you can produce a body," he said, his arm held across his chest as he stepped closer. Alec followed behind Jace, Damien watching their every move. "They return to their home dimensions when they die. In case you were wondering."
Damien tilted his head slightly. "Jace, don't reveal too much," he suggested.
Jace shook his head. "She can see us, Damien," he answered. "She already knows too much."
"So what do you want to do with her?" Isabelle demanded.
"Let her go," Jace demanded, gesturing towards the whip. Isabelle looked at him with a surprised look, but to Damien's shock, obeyed. The whip let go of the mundane's wrist, who rubbed her sore arm.
"Maybe we should bring her back with us," Alec announced. "I bet Hodge would like to talk to her."
"No way are we bringing a Mundie to the Institue," Isabelle retorted.
"I agree with Alec," Damien stated, leaning back slightly. "If she is a Mundie, Hodge will know what to do."
"You're just siding with Alec because you li-" Thankfully, Izzy stopped herself before she told the secret Damien had tried to keep hidden all these years. His heart skipped a beat, but he looked towards Alec, who merely had a confused expression on his face. Jace ignored the two, his attention focused on the mundane.
"Have you had dealings with demons, little girl? Walked with warlocks, talked with the Night Children? Have you-"
"My name is not little girl," she interrupted. Damien snorted, no one ever tried to interrupt Jace in the middle of a sentence. "I have no idea what you're talking about. I don't believe in-in demons, or whatever you-"
Without warning, a voice called out from behind the Mundane, one whom Damien didn't recognize. "Clary?" the mundane boy said, "is everything alright? What happened to the guys, you know, the ones with the knives?" For a second, Damien had forgotten that not every body could see them. After a moment of thinking, the girl, Clary, looked towards the Shadowhunters, then back at her friend.
"I thought they went in here, but I guess they didn't. I'm sorry, it was a mistake," Clary said. Damien felt relief flood through his body, though behind him, Isabelle giggled.
This fanfic is already at 50 reads and there's only three published chapters??? What?? Thank you guys so much! Honestly writing this story is so much fun, I'm enjoying writing Damien's character into everything. I hope you all enjoyed this chapter.
