I was listening to music, the sound drowning out the noise of the busy train station so early in the morning. Sadly, it was the one train that I needed to catch up for school. I hated how busy it was in the mornings before school, but I honestly should have been used to it by now. Usually, I just tried to concentrate on the music and my phone, and not the people around me.
I loved the song that I was playing at the moment – it was my favourite song by my favourite band. It appeared on all my playlists, and had done for the last four months since it had been released by the band. I headed onto the busiest platform and leaned against one of the pillars as I usually did while I waited for the train. There weren't many benches, but they were always full, especially at this time in the morning with all the commuters.
I was a bit surprised when I felt a tap on my shoulder. I pulled the buds out as I turned, seeing a young guy looking at me. The smile on his face probably meant that I had jumped. Then, I noticed that he was holding out my home made keyring for my bag. "You dropped this. Well, it fell from your bag. It's a good choice of band."
"Oh, thank you. I love this band, do you like them?" I wondered, taking the key ring that I had made from him. Since I had wanted a charm of some sort to hang from my bag to show that I liked my favourite band, I had searched for one online, but hadn't found one that I liked, so, I made one instead.
"Yes. I really like the new album that they have just released, have you heard it yet?" The tall guy questioned, coming to stand next to me. I followed his movement, noticing that his wrist had some nice bands on it – thin leather straps that had been braided. He wore about four in total – all miss-matched colours. "Where did you get the keyring from? It's really nice but I've been struggling to find one like it online. If I'm going to be completely honest, I saw your one a couple of weeks ago, but I have been struggling to find one like it online."
"I actually made it." I admitted. He seemed a bit surprised by that comment. This conversation had been going well, however, I had decided to go and ruin it by starting to ramble. "I was also struggling to find one online, too. It didn't actually take too long to make, and I actually love how it turned out."
Since we were a little early for our train, we ended up standing there and talking while waiting for the train. It was the first time that I had actually not listened to my music. The conversation changed easily and it was such a nice conversation. We started talking about our favourite bands and artists, moving onto what school I was in and the college he was attending, including the course that he was on. We didn't even share our names with each other. We were just strangers talking whilst waiting for a train.
Then, the train finally came. I gestured for him to go onto the train first, trying to be nice to him. Also, if I tripped on the way to the train, he wouldn't see it because I would be behind him. There was a method in my madness. "Go on, I'll get on after you."
"Oh, I'm actually heading home after the last train. I only came onto this platform to give you the keyring back. I get Friday's off in college and I've just finished a shift in the club where I work. Have fun in school." He explained to me. "Anyway, I better be off. It was nice meeting you. Maybe I'll see you again next week, though."
"Maybe. It was nice meeting you, too." I replied quickly, smiling at him. I didn't want to miss my train, so, I got onto the train and watching him as I waited for the doors to close. He smiled at me and watched me for a little bit. Then, the door shut and he turned to head off the platform. The train began moving, and I couldn't help but look at him until he disappeared.
I couldn't help but wish that I had found out his name before we had parted ways. As I put my earphones back in, I began wishing that I would run into him again. It would be great if I could get to know him a bit better since we had seemed to get on so well.
Over the next week, as I waited for Friday and my sixteenth birthday to arrive, I thought of him. He had been really fun to talk to and I couldn't help but wonder if he had a string already. He probably already did. Still, since he had complimented my key ring, I made him a wrist band that had matched the ones that he had already been wearing for the band, and a keyring that actually matched mine. I hoped that I would see him again to give him the things that I had made, and I hoped that he liked them.
Most of all, I hoped that I could see him again when I went to catch the train on Friday. I hadn't seen him there all week, and it made me think that he didn't take the train on a regular basis. He must have just needed to take the train for his work in the club. Maybe it had been fate that we had met, and maybe it would be a one time meeting.
Friday finally came and the first thing that I noticed when I woke up in the morning was that my string had appeared overnight. I immediately thought about the guy that I had met in the train station. Could I hope that it was the man from the train station? Would it be too much to hope that it is the man from the train station?
I mean, I was more excited to see him again than I was about my string, and my birthday in fact. I could follow the string after school if I didn't see the guy at the train station. As usual, I headed to the train station to get my usual train to school, waiting in the same spot as I had the week before, only I didn't put headphones in this time since I wanted to know if this guy was actually going to show up.
Still, I leaned against the normal pillar and scrolled through social media while I waited for the train to come, or for the guy to appear. I was carrying the bracelet and the keyring around with me just in the hopes of running into him.
My string, and my birthday, was actually the farthest thing on my mind right now. That was stupid. I had been wanting my string to appear for my whole life, and now that it was there, I couldn't stop thinking about some guy that I had met in the train station a week ago. That was stupid. I should want to follow my string, especially considering that it had appeared and I could actually follow my string before school.
I was stupid to think that I was putting off following my string to meet this guy who I stupidly had a crush on, even though he probably already had a string. It was stupid and I was an idiot for getting my hopes up in thinking that it was him.
"Hey, I've been waiting for you." A strong voice spoke from behind me. I turned to see the guy from last week standing there. I couldn't help but smile. He was actually surprised when he saw me. "It's you. You're the school girl that I was talking to last week."
"Yes. It's good to see you." I replied, digging in my pocket for the wrist band and key ring that I had made. I showed it to him, hoping that he liked it. "I remember you saying that you liked the band so I thought that I could give you these if I saw you again."
"It's well made, and I love the band. I love this, too. Thank you. Will you put the bracelet on for me, please?" He asked, holding out his left hand. I went to put the wrist band on, noticing the string on his finger. I froze. "So, you finally noticed. My boss let me go and hour early because of this string, yet I meet you at the same time as last week. Can I know your name?"
"I'm Violet." I answered, surprised. The guy I had met by chance one morning had turned out to be my destined one. I was too happy about that for it to be normal. I felt myself smiling brightly while I looked at him. "Do I get to know your name, too?"
"My name's Emmett." He told me, pulling me to him and kissing me. In the middle of the train station. "Happy birthday, Violet."
"Thank you." I replied, still surprised.
"Your train is here. I'm going to go home and get a couple of hours sleep but I'll meet you later." He explained, taking my hand and kissing the back of it. "I need to get to know the girl that I am in love with."
Later that afternoon, I sat on the train back to the main train station after school and I wondered what was going to happen when I saw Emmett again. I was so happy to actually know his name now. It had been strange just calling him 'the guy from the train station'. Now I actually had a name to put to his face. It was great.
The train came into the train station and I couldn't help but look for Emmett on the platform. I got up from the train even though I was unsure as to where I was meant to be meeting Emmett. Once I got off the train, I stepped out of the way of the doorway and looked around for the guy at the end of my string. It was possible that he hadn't actually woken up from his sleep since he had worked all night.
Still, I really wanted to see Emmett right now. I looked down at my hand, at my string, and realised that I could follow my string to find Emmett. It wasn't the stupidest idea that I had ever had, and I had had quite a few stupid ideas.
When I was walking out of the train station, I bumped into Emmett. He wrapped an arm around my waist and gave me a smile. I smiled up at him, and he immediately bent down to kiss me. "I'm sorry that I'm late. So, shall we go and get some coffee?"
