Mia's POV
I entered the house to see my mother's brother in the living room.He started coming here a lot after dad died. Dad and him never really got along.Dad never really got along with anyone from my mother's family that's why we're totally cut off from them.
"Mija", he smiled at me from the couch with the remote in his hand.
" Hello Uncle Marlon", I smiled at him as I made my way to the kitchen which is where my mother would normally be.
As I predicted she was standing at the stove and the steam clouded the entire kitchen as the aroma of the food engulfed me.
"Go figure", I said after clearing my throat.
" Hi baby, hope you hungry.I made your favourite", she said coming towards me and placing a kiss on my cheek.
"No you made Uncle Marlon's favourite and it just happens to be my favourite too. "
"Mia, don't be a pain. Come now and have supper with us", she rolled her eyes.
"I wish I could but Penelope actually invited me over to her house for supper and I already agreed mom. "
"Penelope hey? You sure not Jamie? Maybe you don't want to tell your mother you're going to meet the in laws", she chuckled.
"You think you're funny that's your problem", I sighed with a smile.
"Thanks for the diagnostics", she replied.
" You mean diagnosis. ", I corrected her before heading toward the kitchen doorway.
" Be home before ten and I'm going to phone Mrs Martin to check if you reached there safely. "
"Alright, I'm gonna take a shower, I still want some of that Mac and cheese tho so just slip some in the fridge there, I don't trust uncle Marlon", I threatened before exiting the kitchen.
I made my way up to my room while dialling Penelope's number. She wasn't always the type of girl to answer her phone but surprisingly this was one of her good days.
"What's up Buttercup? ", I greeted her as soon as she picked up the call.
"Mia, I feel so special. You don't ever call me", Penelope laughed.
" Well where's my best friend of the year award", I rolled my eyes even though she couldn't see.
she laughed and it was good to hear the sound.
"Since I made you laugh, you have to do something for me", I said in a joking tone.
"Now I have to pay to laugh?But you know I'd do anything for you Mia, I'd die for you. "
"Calm your farm, no one has to die. It's just that uncle Marlon came over for dinner and-"
"Don't you like hate him or something?", she cut me off.
" -Or something.So I told my mother I was coming to dinner over at your house because I knew she wouldn't mind,but of course she's gonna call your house to see if I reached there safe. I just really don't want to be around them", I explained as I opened my wardrobe and rummaged in it for anything decent I could wear.
"This is perfect! You're coming over for dinner! ", Penelope exclaimed a little too loud which made me move the phone away from my ear.
"I was actually going to ask if you would just answer when my mom called and tell her I was there", I clarified as I pulled out a sweater and jeans from my wardrobe.
"That's a stupid plan,where are you going to go anyway? Just come over it will be so fun. My parents wanted you to come visit for so long too. Please Mia.", she begged.
I did come to the conclusion that going to her house would have been much less depressing then having to go to my cousin's house and watch him and a random girl make out in front of me.
"I don't know, Penelope. "
"You were going to go to Raf's house right?"
"It has been a while since I've seen him", I defended.
" It's alright choose him over me, I see how it is. ", Penelope said sternly. She was trying to manipulate me.
" I'm going to shower, I'll be there in a half hour", I said as I ended the call and threw my phone on the bed.
