Oobleck: (Talking fast, per the norm, as he paces in front of the students.) Yes, I'm afraid those bags won't be necessary, seeing as you've opted to shadow a Huntsman on what is now essentially a reconnaissance mission. I can assure you, we will not be establishing a single base of operations; rather, we will be traversing several miles of hazardous wasteland and making camp in any defendable locations we may stumble upon. I packed all of our needed necessities myself, plotted our air course, and readied the airship. And... (Zooms up right to Weiss' face.) It's Doctor Oobleck. I didn't earn the PhD for fun, thank you very much! (Quickly backs away.)
Weiss looks over at Blake Belladonna, who is equally disturbed. Y/N walks past them and says a few words
Y/N: Trust me when I say this. I had his coffee before and I completely understand why he could go like that. The only thing I don't know is how he isn't dead by now due to the amount of caffeine in his blood stream.
Y/N walks off into a bullhead having only his weapons and a survivor backpack.
Ruby: Well, alrighty, then! Looks like we're going to save the world with Doctor Oooobleck- okay yeah when you say it out loud it sounds worse.
Jaune: Sounds exciting. Where ya going?
Ruby: Oh, just outside the kingdom...
Nora: Hey! So are we!
Pyrrha: Ren and Nora wanted to shadow the sheriff of a nearby village.
Ren: We set out tomorrow.
Neptune: Then you can party with us tonight! We're shadowing a crime specialist. All inner-city detective stuff. We get junior badges.
Y/N (over comms): Warn Neptune and Sun that they shouldn't try impersonating a federal agent because it is illegal and considered a federal offense. Basically they aren't allowed to use the badge with any authority once their week is over, and even then I'm sure those have no power at all.
Ruby (over comms): Okay I'll be sure to warn them that.
After Ruby gives the explanation the rest of the team enters the bullhead. Y/N is simply checking his weapons and calibrating it making sure that it's in proper shape. Each person continues doing their own thing to pass the time.
Yang: Ha! Looks like I win again Ruby!
Ruby: That's no fair! I swear the game freezes on me!
Blake: Can you quiet down? I'm trying to read.
Weiss: (Noticing what Y/N is doing) Aaaaah!
What do you think you're playing with one of those death balls?!
Y/N: Relax. First of all it's a seeker mine, and secondly I remove the explosives off of this one. I use this particular seeker mine to pass the time.
The bullhead arrives at the desolate ruins dropping off Team RWBY, Y/N, and Oobleck. They decide to converse amongst themselves to pass the time.
Oobleck: Besides, given my expertise in the field of history as well as my dabbling in the archaeological surveys, our dear headmaster saw fit to assign me to this particular... assignment!
Weiss: What does history have to do with this?
Oobleck: (Turning sharply on Weiss) Why, what a preposterous question, you silly girl! Why, history is the backbone of our very society! And the liver! Probably the kidneys, if I were to wager.
Y/N: Weiss, have you ever heard a expression saying, "those who don't know their history are doomed to repeat it." We study our history as it is of great importance to avoid repeating the past mistakes. Since I can't give an in depth explanation in this context of the ruins I'm sure Dr. Oobleck can clarify.
Weiss: And that means?
Oobleck: Correct as always Mr. Frost. The southeast quadrant outside of Vale is home to wild forests and deep caves, but it is also the location to one of the kingdom's greatest failures!
Ruby: Mountain Glenn.
Yang: That's right! It was an expansion of Vale... but in the end it was overrun by Grimm and fenced off from the rest of the city.
Oobleck: Correct! And now it stands abandoned as a dark reminder.
Blake: And a likely place for a hideout.
Oobleck: (adjusts his glasses and smiles) Precisely!
As they were walking Oobleck makes a stop to inform the team their directions that they must follow.
Oobleck: (Calls the attention of RWBY) You still may be students, but as of this moment, your first mission as Huntresses has begun! From this point forward, you need to do exactly as I say! Do you understand? (They nod, but he suddenly looks at Ruby, startling her.) Ruby! I thought I told you to leave all of your bags back at school.
Ruby: But I, well uh-
Oobleck: Young lady, what in the world could you possibly have in that bag that could be so important to bring it with...
Zwei pops out of the bag barking. Everyone looks at the uninvited guess while Ruby attempts to put the dog back in the back.
Ruby: Zwei! Get back in the bag.
Oobleck: We're here to investigate an abandoned urban jungle teeming with death and hostility, and you brought... a dog?
Ruby: I, uh...
Oobleck: Genius! Canines are historically known for their perceptive nose and heighten sense of sound, making them an excellent companion for a hunt such as ours!
Ruby: Uh, what?
Y/N: I think he said that it was genius move.
Ruby: (happily) I'm as genius!
Oobleck: Grimm. A creature of Grimm approximately one hundred yards from us at this very moment.
A lone Beowolf wandering into the street, and Team RWBY readies their weapons once more.
Oobleck: Stop!
Blake: Huh?
Oobleck: There are a number of reasons why Grimm will congregate in this particular area, the most likely of which will be their attraction to negativity: sadness, envy, loneliness, hatred. All qualities that are likely held by our hidden group harboring ill intent.
Y/N: Uh... Doc I just gotta say I'm holding most of those emotions right now.
Five more Beowulf's appears and began charging at the group noticing Y/N's emotions.
Oobleck: It appears as if they spotted us (he says pointing out the obvious). Show me what you're capable of.
Ruby: (Swings Crescent Rose to prepare it for shooting) Cover your ears, Zwei!
The dog does so, curling up into a ball.
Black lines race across the screen as a single Beowolf and smiling Yang run towards one another, ending with the blonde knocking it out in one fiery punch as they pass. Two more appear and begin charging at Y/N. Pulling out Trespasser he fired a two rounds between the eyes and one in the forehead killing the target. The second seeing his dead comrade roared and charged at him. He calmly pulled out his combat knife and began charging at the beast. Using its size against him he dodge the first attack and began climbing his back repeatedly stabbing the side of its neck until it laid dead. As Weiss and Blake are dealing with their own problems a wave of Beowolves are converging on Ruby, but she shoots multiple bullets at the oncoming force... while Zwei is busy chasing his own tail.
Ruby: Heh! Piece of cake!
Oobleck: Do not celebrate yet, for I am certain this is the first bout of many. Shall we continue?
They continue to do just that as Y/N uses the Historian while Ruby transforms her scythe into a sniper rifle. Both firing from afar making sure that none comes close.
Oobleck: Excellent work, Team RWBY and Y/N! Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any signs of criminal operations in this sector. Oh, well! Moving on! Tell me, Yang: Why did you choose this line of work?
Yang: The honest reason? I'm a thrill-seeker. I want to travel around the world and get wrapped up in as many crazy adventures as I can. And if I help people along the way, then that's even better. It's a win-win, y'know?
Oobleck: I see.
Oobleck: And you, Miss Schnee? A girl born into fame and fortune such as yourself certainly doesn't need the extra work. So... why choose this over a cushy job in Atlas?
Weiss: It's exactly as you said: I'm a Schnee. I have a legacy of honor to uphold. Once I realized I was capable of fighting, there was no longer a question of what I would do with my life. It was my duty.
Oobleck: (nodding) Interesting. And what about you, Blake? You seem to carry yourself with a sense of purpose.
Blake slashes a door down and releases a swarm of small Nevermores from the building, which she back-flips under before she shoots them all with her blade's pistol form.
Blake: There's too much wrong in this world to just stand by and do nothing. Inequality, corruption... Someone has to stop it.
Oobleck "Hmm's" to himself, then dashes away. He arrives as Y/N was finishing off the last of his Grimm on his side. With a horde of Grimm charging towards Y/N he throws a frag grenade at them shooting it out of the air with his sidearm. The explosion obliterated them.
Oobleck: Y/N looking over your confidential information in the transcript and personal statements iwas interesting. So what is your reasoning?
Y/N: (Putting a fresh mag in his sidearm) Ruby seems to fights to help people, Yang being a thrill seeker, and Blake for equality. I do so under a different banner. My time in the Strategic Homeland Division has been rather different. The difference between me and your huntsmen is that us as the last line of defense are trained to fight using any means necessary. Whereas you all protect people against hostile forces we protect people from themselves. Once society falls human nature reveals itself and so we fight for those who can't themselves. This being in hopes that society will return like it once was. Before I was transported here I knew we were making progress as I saw people with their families not getting killed over basic necessities. Does this answer your question?
Oobleck: I see Mr. Frost, I think this quote applies to you. "Life isn't just about darkness or light, rather it's about finding light within the darkness." Just remember this phrase as you are handling your hardship, remember what you're fighting for. With that he speeds off living Y/N with his thoughts.
"Remember what you're fighting for." Thinking back to this I remember aiding Sarah when she was in this position. If she can do this I can continue down this road. If a person must die it should be protecting my family, friends, and those who can't do so themselves. I believed in her time of need and now I must believe in myself for her.
Later, Ruby is using her weapon in the most practical fashion and lifting a whole turkey on the sharp end of her gun to tease a jumping and flipping Zwei with. That is, until she spots her teacher watching, quickly sheathing Crescent Rose.
Y/N: Who thought it was a good idea to pack a whole turkey? (Silence) No answer, I should have figured.
Oobleck: I believe that will have to do for today. It's going to be dark soon. (Throws his bag over to Yang) You three, set up camp in that building. Oh, and please do make sure there are no more of those... creatures. You two (points at Ruby and Y/N) you're going to take first shift.
While Blake, Weiss, and Yang were finding a suitable spot to camp for the night Ruby and I were keeping watch. Nothing was said until Ruby decided to break the silence.
Ruby: Sooo uhhh....
Y/N: It would be good if you can speak your mind as right now you're making this more harder than it needs to be.
Ruby: Right. Did you really meant what you said back there?
Y/N: (sighs) In a manner of speaking yes. Ruby have you ever experienced loss?
Ruby: Yes. (sadly) My mother died when I was a child during a mission. I don't remember much about her but she was a super mom. She made the best cookies and stuff. What Yang told me is that she was the best; she took care of her as well when her own mom left out on them. I still visit her grave sometimes to talk to her.
Y/N: Sorry to hear that. Before arriving on Remnant it's just that my line of work started getting to me. I didn't choose to be assigned to a team after Mavericks death. I figured I didn't want to experience the loss once more. Then over here in Beacon when I thought life was getting good it all came to a halt.
Ruby: You've got a team now, Y/N. We both do. And if we fail, then, we'll just be bringing them down with us. We have to put our teammates first, and ourselves second. Your team deserves a great leader. Does this rampage of yours will bring back Sarah? Do what you do but do it the way that Sarah and I know how you do it.
Y/N: (chuckling) Wow never would've thought that it would be you lecturing me. It seems like yesterday I was the one telling you what being a leader is about. You did good for your first time.
Ruby: For my first time? What does that even mean?
Y/N: In this line of work Ruby there will be times where you doubt what you're doing. Just remember what you said and what you're doing it for and you'll be fine. Though sometimes we just need a little reminder.
After eating our dinners it was time for our first shift. While I was eating a MRE I don't know what kind of thing is Zwei. It acts like a dog but what it did to that turkey. I still have shudders at the thought of it. Suddenly I hear Ruby yelling for Zwei. I finally caught up to them only to see Zwei urinating.
Ruby: Zwei! This is a wasteland, you could've done this anywhere.
Zwei: Barks happily.
WF Guard 1: What was that?
Having heard the WF Guard, Ruby hides behind some ruins. I hid behind some bushes
thinking so much much for heightened senses.
WF Guard 2: What was what?
WF Guard 1: I thought I heard a Beowolf or something.
WF Guard 2: Hmph. Let's just finish our patrol and get back to base. This place gives me the creeps.
They both sneak around in the background, following them. Eventually reaching a ruined building with a pair of metal doors, and Ruby hides behind a corner, holding Zwei out to watch them.
Ruby: Did they go in yet? One bark means yes.
The sound of the door closing echoes out.
Zwei: Bark!
Y/N walks over to Ruby saying we should warn the others. Needless to say he forgot to tell her he was there in the first place.
Ruby: Oh you scared me Y/N! This is it! This is it! (She brings out a small scroll and tries to call her teammates. However, the screen says "Low Signal") Aw man! Come on, we gotta get the others!
Y/N: We can use the com system.
Ruby: Oh yeah.
The asphalt beneath them sinks before caving in. Y/N falls in immediately while Ruby grabs onto a ledge and catches Zwei. She tosses him up out of the hole and attempts to pull herself up. However, the ledge she was holding onto breaks off, and plummets into a cave filled with ruined buildings, far below the surface.
Y/N: (coughs) Ruby you okay?
Ruby: (groans) Yeah, mostly.
Y/N: Com System doesn't work. We are too far below. The way how I see it is we have one of three options: one we wait for Zwei to warn the others, two I use a flare gun, or three we scout out the area.
Ruby: You have more experience with this so why don't you make the choice?
Y/N: Well if I use a flare gun I'm sure all the white fang in the immediate area will know of our location alongside the Grimm. We could use this dilemma of ours to scout out the area to see their operations or simply hold our location.
Ruby: Let's scout the area. (noticing her weapon is missing) Where... um I must have dropped my weapon.
Y/N: Sadly most of my weapons were in my survivors backpack. I only brought Liberator seeing as how it was just a night shift. (sighs) Well lets continue.
Walking through the ruins we had to go in a snails pace due to the constant patrols. Now normally I would take them out but again my suppressor is in my bag. In the case being if there was an intruder my weapon would have warned the others. Going deeper we saw a train with white fang soldiers loading in boxes. They were also loading in all kinds of weapons.
Ruby: (whispering) Y/N I have an idea.
Y/N: (whispering) Knowing you it's something I would have never thought of.
Ruby: (whispering) Well the White Fang are loading boxes in the train. We hide in one of the boxes and they load us in the train.
Y/N: (whispering) Fine but I want to say this now since we're gonna be in an awkward position in the box. Even though Yang knows I'm with Sarah if they see us just immediately explain the situation to Yang.
Ruby: (whispering) Why do you feel the need for me to say that?
Y/N: (whispering) Your sister is overprotective and I'm afraid she will be the shoot first ask questions later type of person.
Ruby: (whispering) You're not wrong.
They climb into a box with Y/N going in first and Ruby second. She was on top because if it was the opposite Ruby would be crushed. They started to get picked up or at least attempted to.
White Fang 1: Uh I need a little help over here. This one is a lot heavier.
White Fang 2: Let me show you how it's done.
He attempts to lift it only for it to fall upside down. Ruby is being crushed while more white members start arriving at the scene thinking this particular box must have a heavy load.
White Fang 1: See! Told ya! Call in Perry and Gary. We need more men to carry this.
Perry and Gary arrive at the scene. They are twice the size of the average white fang soldier. Needless to say they carried the box with ease. Putting the gently down they get back on their job.
Ruby: (whispering) Finally I'm no longer being crushed no more.
Y/N: (whispering) I thought they were gonna open the box. I was honestly afraid of who this Perry and Garry was.
Meanwhile with the rest of Team RWBY
Yang: Hey Weiss, it's your... Ruby? Hey, where's Ruby?
Oobleck: What? Where's Y/N?
Zwei comes running into the room, barking.
Yang: Zwei?
Blake: What's going on?
Oobleck: Grab your weapons and Y/N's gear! They may be in trouble.
Zwei leads Oobleck and Ruby's teammates to the hole that Ruby fell into, and Yang spots Crescent Rose next to the hole.
Weiss: Do you think she fell?
Oobleck: (Looks down at the hole) Oh my. Of course! Of course, OF COURSE, OF COURSE!
Oobleck: Mountain Glenn! Yes, an expansion of Vale inevitably destroyed by creatures of Grimm! Previously home to thousands! Working people commuting to the main city! Developed a subway system to the inner city! Grimm attacks increased tenfold! Population in danger, desperately searching for shelter! City evacuates into the metro tunnels and what do they find? The southeast quadrant of Vale is known for its wild forests and deep caves! It was Vale's first serious attempt at expansion.
Yang: Doc, what are you saying?
Oobleck: It worked for a short period of time, thanks to an aggressive perimeter defense, and unique transportation; the city developed an elaborate subway system to carry citizens safely from the new territory into the main Kingdom! Sadly, without the many natural barriers Vale had to protect its borders, Mountain Glenn was doomed from the start! As the end drew near, the citizens made one last attempt at survival: They took up shelter beneath the city! In massive caves that they had cleared out for the subway. And they had cut themselves off from the surface!
Yang: An underground village?
Oobleck: In a matter of speaking, yes. A safe haven. Until... an explosion opened the mouth of another cavern, filled with subterranean Grimm. After that, the Kingdom officially sealed off the tunnels, creating the world's largest tomb. If Ruby and Y/N is down there, (Oobleck deploys his weapon) we must find them...
