“The answer was D,” Spencer argued as she walked out of English with Toby Cavanaugh. He scoffed.
“It was B.” He glanced at her from the corner of his eye and chuckled at her pigheadedness. Her emerald green eyes were filled with refutation.
“If ‘none of the above’ was an option, you always take it, Toby. That’s what you learn in sixth grade!” She laughed and looked back at him. She knew there was no point in arguing with Toby anyways; he was always right about everything.
“I got the question wrong, didn’t I?”
He grinned. “Yup.”
Spencer rolled her eyes. Toby Cavanaugh was a genius and everybody knew it; she was the only person who actually debated with him, which was probably the reason they’d been best friends since the fifth grade. She gave up far too easily half the time, but he didn’t care. He liked her spunk. She seemed to be the only girl at Rosewood High who actually understood him and his terrible sense of humor.
“I just hope I get an A,” he said as they made their way down the hall. “If my GPA drops…”
Spencer looked at him, giving him a nudge on the shoulder. “Loosen up. We all know you’re going to Ivy League. Stop worrying.” The creases on her forehead gradually smoothed underneath his sharp stare, his green eyes softening. She couldn’t stifle the chuckle that escaped her lips; he got so serious over the simplest things. “I’m pretty sure I got a C on that. I just don’t get symbols. How on Earth can a dog characterize prejudgment?”
They made their way outside the picnic tables. They could see the familiar faces of Caleb, Hanna, Ezra, Aria, Alison and Emily in the distance. “I can tutor you, if you want,” Toby suggested after a few minutes.
She smiled softly. “Tonight?”
Toby’s green eyes locked with hers, green on green. “I thought I was coming to your house tonight to watch the Tim Burton marathon. Now we have to study?” Jokily, he let out a groan, causing Spencer to hit him on the shoulder.
“Remind why we even have to watch those stupid movies if we’ve seen them more than once?”
“Because,” Toby started, “watching you hold up a pillow to your face because it scares you is priceless.”
Spencer scoffed and hit him again. Finally, they reached their friends at the picnic table. Hanna and Emily glanced up at them both with a giggle. “Seriously?” Hanna said. “Is there ever a time when you two aren’t together?”
They both smiled and sheepishly looked away.
