Port of Oakland Uses Phase II of SynchroMet Service
The Port of Oakland, San Francisco, is using Phase II of SynchroNet
Marine's SynchroMet service, which manages co-ordination between shipping lines and trucking
companies to share empty containers.
The idea is that trucking companies who need empty containers for exports can find out about
empty containers which have just been used for imports into the US and exchange them, without
having to return them back to the terminal (this is known as street turns). SynchroMet manages
the transaction.
"SynchroMet has saved us an enormous amount of money," said Alan Osofsky traffic manager,
Rodgers Trucking Company, San Leandro, CA. "We have been able to street-turn over 300 units
that would have sat in our yard acquiring charges, and we are saving man-hours normally incurred
each time we return an empty container to the port.
"We estimate we save an average of two-to-three hours per container by using SynchroMet for
street turns."
