The mother and her husband are now living in Hollywood, California, while their two sons are serving in the U.S. Army in Europe. More than 500 war time letters are recorded and commented on by a grandson who upon discovering the trove of letters begins to search for his roots and understanding about his own life in 2010 through the voices of his grandparents, uncle and father. This then is the story of an assimilated Jewish family's escape from Austria to America in 1938 as revealed by their correspondence and with the intimate observations by the grandson as he comes to terms with his own life two generations later.

The town of Fabini is and will always be the center of our world because it is who we are. Don't you ever doubt it for a moment." "And grandfather, why did I become Tintin in my adventures?" "Because dear Renzo, we choose our heroes carefully since they are who we dream to be. They fight the battles in the way we feel they should be fought--nothing more, nothing less." I think I understand grandfather, but just one last question grandfather?" "And what is it Renzo?" Asked an amused Girardus. "Why did the evil witch and that evil boy come into my adventures?" "Ah, that is a question I cannot answer Renzo. Evil slips into all our lives in its own way, and on its own terms. Why it does, only God knows."

In the center of town is a rather ambiguous shaped fountain which generates mysterious libidinal energy among the various residents and visitors. In addition to this centralizing symbol, there are numerous related characters mentioned tangentially in one story only to resurface as characters in another. The first story begins with the arrival of a dilapidated circus, and the final story reintroduces the circus which has taken on a greater sophistication, making a full circle in the evolution of the stories. There are essentially two themes running through the stories. The first one deals with men/women relationships. The second consists of irreverent satire on the following topics: religion, government, ethnic conflicts, and of course sex. All stories must be read in their entirety to full appreciate the Fabini Circus.
