David Sox was a part-time clergyman, author of books on the Shroud of Turin, and an art aficionado. He oozed self- importance and had an inherent ruthlessness that made him reach out for any opportunity to raise his own reputation and notoriety. In the 1990s David Sox became a guide at Highclere Castle ( the backdrop to TV's "Downton Abbey"). Sox approached the 7th Earl of Carnarvon about writing a biography of Almina, 5th Countess of Carnarvon, the Earl's beloved 'granny' - the widow of the 5th Earl of Old King Tut fame. The idea of Sox's biography received the green light. He was given unfettered access to Highclere Archives, and although Almina had died aged 93, in 1969, there were many people still alive who knew her and numerous sources to tap into about her extraordinary life and times. Lois Ina Sturt and Reginald Herbert, 15th Earl of Pembroke, including long biographical sketches on them from cradle to grave. • " The book is 100 pages long, over 30,000 words with over 200 End Notes and contains over 100 images, with several unique pictures of Lois and Reggie and their "tribe".

The departure from telling the truth about Evan, Lord Tredegar by history fraudsters working at Tredegar House and in the contributions these same fraudsters make to books and newspaper articles creates a damaging effect and a profoundly bad influence upon those in particular who wish to know the real history of this remarkable character . Such tales told to those who are ( in good faith) then placing the called history into the public domain ( which is known to have been tampered with ) is grossly reprehensible. The TRUTH is what public visitors to this wonderful house deserve. Those who genuinely wish to know the truth about past exploits of the Morgan family and the incumbents of Tredegar House - the Morgan seat in Newport, should also expect that as the House is now run by the National Trust , that that famed organisation should ensure that only accurate and sourced stories are told. Among the worst myths about Evan Morgan concerns his war time service in the Royal Signals Corps during World War 2 . Evan was an officer in the section known as MI 14, who were responsible for the use of carrier pigeons in the war effort. In April 1943 after taking command of one of the small sections at MI 14 involving liaison with the pigeon breeders ( supplying the birds to the War Office ) Evan suffered the humiliation of a Court Martial for breeches of the Official Secrets Act. Evan's downfall was brutal.

Lady Katharine, Viscountess Tredegar

The lively story of British aristocrat Lady Katharine Agnes Blanche Carnegie ( 1867-1949), Viscountess Tredegar, of Tredegar House, Newport, South Wales. She was born at Kinnaird Castle, Brechin, Scotland on 12 June 1867, daughter of James Carnegie the 9th Earl of Southesk and James' second wife, Susan Murray, Countess of Southesk. She had several siblings and half siblings. Married Charles Courtenay Evan Morgan at Kinnaird in 1890. Two children, Evan Frederic Morgan ( 1893-1949), poet, homosexual and Papal Chamberlain, and Gwyneth Ericka Morgan ( 1895-1924). Evan was the 4th Lord Tredegar, Gwyneth died in mysterious circumstances in London in 1924. Katharine was Lady Tredegar from 1913 to 1949, Viscountess Tredegar from 1926 to 1934 and Dowager Viscountess Tredegar from 1934 to 1949. Lived in London at Grosvenor Square and Grosvenor Street and briefly at 39 Portman Square and during the Great War years at Bryanston Square. Katharine's country home was at Honeywood House, Rowhook, Dorking, Surrey. She was an artist, patron of the arts and benefactor to the poor. Lady Katharine always had a touching love for birds and as a hobby constructed small nests made from moss and twigs as a way of relieving her painful arthritis. The authority for this and a man of integrity is the journalist / author, Cecil Roberts in his book "The Bright Twenties". Sadly tall tales are told at Tredegar House, a National Trust property in Newport South Wales, of Katharine as a mad bird woman. Repeating tales of her building and sitting in 'giant bird's nests' maligns the memory of Lady Katharine, Viscountess Tredegar. These postings are an attempt to reveal the truth and scoff the lies and myths told at Tredegar House.

Before the centenary let us hope the historical record is corrected and the truths told. Evan, Lord Tredegar : Selected Letters, Prose and Quotations

Here is a wonderful selection of letters and prose from the Hon. Evan Morgan, ( 1893-1949), in a first ever anthology of the surviving written works of the ‘ unique fairy prince of modern life’ before he became Lord Tredegar. Evan’s biographer, William Cross, author of five books on the Morgans of Tredegar House, Newport has compiled an Introduction and background notes. Cross reveals Evan’s intimate correspondence to his beloved friend ‘Krylie’ ( Cyril Hartmann) culled from the Tredegar House Archive. In addition are Evan’s letters to the composer Cecil Gray and to literary giants George Bernard Shaw and G K Chesterton from the British Library Manuscripts Department, published for the first time in ninety years. The letters reveal a surprisingly whimsical, witty, whilst occasionally warped side to Evan thoughts, relationships and deeds. In addition the compilation combines a broad base of prose articles by Evan contributed to magazines and newspapers offering his own personal memoir of time spent in Algiers ( 1918); Paris ( 1919); Rome ( for the visit to the Pope at the Vatican of King George V and Queen Mary in 1923); and his view of Limehouse as its prospective Member of Parliament in 1929. Evan’s vision on Catholic matters is confronted in a serious article, but there is a lighter note with a lyrical piece about how the Victorians are remembered. The sizable collection of quotations about Evan will amuse and provoke. These pieces are rare, the results of Cross’s ten years of research. The work fills a gap as very little of Evan’s written words ( except his poems and verse) are readily available in the public domain.

In the 1940s combating financial pressures and terminal cancer, Evan, Viscount Tredegar, closed down the family seat of Tredegar House, Newport, South Wales, whilst he considered his options, a third marriage (into wealth ) being one solution, Irish citizenship another. Evan had always enjoyed a larger than life public profile and with it a coveted place in Society, spending money freely. But now he was an outcast. His personal affairs were in tatters, he was forced to sell off heirlooms and cold-shoulder attempts to sign over the family Estate to his cousin, John, whom he detested. Despite the dilemmas Evan continued to travel and pleasure seek in his favorite overseas haunts but he was forced to spend his dying weeks in Britain in hospital and at Honeywood House his mother’s home in Surrey where she lay in a doomed state of senility. In the decade following Evan’s death the Inland Revenue struggled to unravel his taxation whilst accountants tracked down the details of his realizable assets. His Executors sought meanwhile to destroy compromising documents to minimize the damaging legacy of Evan’s homosexual life style. Evan’s Executors and heir were also charged with providing for the continuance of a wealth base within the Tredegar Settled Lands and for finding a solution to settle death duties, surtax arrears and importantly pay the accounts of a small army of trade creditors in Newport and Dorking, in order to preserve the Morgan family’s good name.
